Actually, As of the first of January the State of California has mandated that all electrical workers be IBEW (International Bearu of Electrical Workers) certified to work. Should one not be certified to work, they must be apprenticed under the umbrella of a Certified person not to exceed 2 apprentices per Certificate.
This has been whispered and rumored for years throughout California for close to 7 years now. Nobody ever thought that it would come to pass (I personally voted to recall that jackass Gray Davis and to elect Arnold Schwarzenegger to office to avoid just this thing, thinking Arnold and the Republican party would protect my right to work from Union greed. But thats another discussion for another thread) so nobody ever bothered to test. Now that the policy is enforced, I find myself being 1 of 2 people in a 175 person company that is certified. (not counting the Boss)
That being said, I volunteered to work in Fresno (About 2-3 hours from my home in Sacto) for 1 week prior to X-Mas. The legislation has since more-or-less trapped me in Fresno to facilitate the completion of a projected 6 month development. The city of Fresno is ill prepared to handle the influx of new construction and subsequent occupants of new homes. I guess the city dosen't have the utilities to spare (water, sewer, power, etc..) thus we are fast tracking it to try and circumvent State, County, and City ordinances ordering us to cease all construction.
Having only 2 certified people with a work schedule of 12 hours a day 6-7 days a week forces me to "umbrella" various types of inspections with inspectors who are very, very good at scrutinizing everything done, and whipping out portions of code so old that archaic dosent even begin to capture their age.
In a nutshell, I didn't go to WoW, I'm just not at home. There is a guy in our rented work-house who plays WoW, so I'm guessing Kile misinformed you. The project has a scheduled 7 weeks remaining, with whispers of us headed to New Orleans to help with the rebuilding in the wake of Katrina. We're currently looking into California workers working outside of California and weather or not the new Union laws apply there. If they do not apply, I'm not going. If they do, I'll have no choice.
Worst case scenario, the State of California currently has a backlog of 7 months for workers to complete the exam. At $150 a pop per person testing.....gogogo special intrest money!!! But again, thats a topic for another thread.
