The Ritter Shield.

question be was those people even using the gorget? which is a nice replacement for Harmonia Torque

I saw a PLD wearing a Ritter Shield a couple days ago in Whitegate, and noted no Ritter Gorget at all. Parade Gorget, if I recall.

I'd stick the verification tags on that, Flag.

Even if that bullshit about 2% damage reduction is actually true, it doesn't warrant using the Shield. Ritter gorget wouldn't and shouldn't be full-timed anyway, much like Harmonia's. It's used for the enmity, and should be macro'd between your Parade Gorget in idle or shield torque in most casting.

Moral of the story:

RITTER SHIELD has no use at all!

It might not be 2% if both are equipped. There is no fact that says it is only 2% . 4% damage reduction is not a bad damage reduction.(2% from the shield and 2% from the gorget) If the person wears the gorget it makes up for the enmity loss that you get from not equipping the Koenig shield. So in all honesty it isn't that bad of a shield, especially if the person is going for % damage reduction gear no?

No. It really is that bad a shield. People are using it to look good, or be cheap.

Maybe they wear it in the memory of John Ritter. That's the only feasible reason I can see for using it at 75.

In the right set, it's decent

Jelly - 5
D.Ring - 10
Hautclaire - 7
Ritter Combo - 4
Valhalla Helm - 5
Valhalla Breastplate - 5
DS sub+1 - 3
DS Leggings+1 - 2
Heavy Gauntlets - 3

44% dmg reduction is quite a bit...(yes I know this isn't your everyday findable gear)

Damage reduction's kinda useless if you're not the one getting hit, lol.

That combo has enmity on 4 pieces. Add to that slots that aren't being used:
Back: enmity+4 (Cerb+1) or High Breath for +5
Ears: Hades+1 = Enmity+4

Roughly you're looking at around 18-20 enmity.

The 3 enmity you'd gain from koenig won't make a difference in the grand scheme of things, it's full time gear meaning you don't have to gearswap and blink your mages off of you.

Survivability wise, you're not going to find much better physically. Sentinel + Flash + Rampart is more than enough hate to setup for a long fight, which is when this would be most useful.

Several points...

The entry on the "Ritter combination" was added recently to wiki- like last week. It's not been confirmed, and the wiki says combined gives 2%, not 4%.

Also, Parade gorget is going to be your idle neck piece.

Finally, 2% or 4% matter for nothing if you're mostly blink tanking, which a PLD/NIN should be doing.

Ninja edit: Another point i missed.. is that none of the people i've seen wearing Ritter shield, are using the Ritter gorget.

Go ahead and blink tank Sarameya, let me know how much you'll be hit.
Also let me know how often you're HP is >85% while you're at it for parade to be working.

Other times this would be a viable set are other things that can't be elegied, such as Ouryu as pld/rdm. The dmg reduction would be a great help.

It has a use, and I know situations it has value in a specific gearset, assuming the latent's are confirmed.

Okay. So if a wiki-myth is proven true, then it has a niche use in a minority of cases perhaps.

That doesn't justify why it's become a "fashionable" item at the moment- or so it seems. In campaign, in EXP, i see it most everywhere now. What annoys me the most (as i said earlier) is what i would consider pretty decently equipped Paladins, wearing this piece of shit (without Ritter Gorget, may i add).

Way too much reading into this. Intended to be a joke thread, to be honest. Lol

I can see Sarameya being a little fishier to tank, if he is constantly spamming chainspell and/or Firaga III, but normal Cerberus is totally blinkable even without slow and elegy. Its not exactly easy, but not to hard either. And i dont see anything about elegy not sticking with elemental seal, so im assuming that would work wich makes blinking a walk in the park.
Does he firaga III that much? We also pretty much always have a few off-tanks in the form of drks and wars to distribute hate among if he is being pissy. I always want my drks and wars to actually try to tank, even if pld's and rdms keep hate most of the time. Drk/Nin is the ultimate job on normal cerberus atleast, because of having both melee dmg, stun and a good tanking ability.

Im curious how much harder they made these mobs, or if they compensated with lower hp/defense/attackspeed/triple attack% or something. Almost curious enough to play some, but luckily i uninstalled ffxi. :P

Only thing I could figure would be the hp mp with light resist might be used for a ultima setup? Assuming the person would not need the enm/ bst killer and think the 10 hp/mp trumps the 5 vit/chr to save money? Personally I don't think so, but that be 2 senerios it could be.

Sarameya and Cerb are almost two completely different monsters. Sarameya becoming stun resistant very easily makes for a completely different strategy. He aga's extremely often, which calls for a fire resist set, however getting ichi up is near impossible due to his attack speed. Ad to that a hate-shedding roar, and it's a much different fight altogether.

The only saving grace is at least you know exactly when Chainspells are coming so you can prepare for them.

Have you considered the fact that the -2% is damage reduction and not just physical damage reduction? This means it is a good piece in every magic defence builds (for example Ultima CB or JoL). Even though the cap on magic reduction is easy to reach for pld now with IR gear and a Shell V, the shield and gorget might open another slot for you (like allowing to wear a boxer's mantle getting rid of resentment).

If the -2 on shield and gorget is cumulative adding to a -4% I would even consider it over a Koenig shield. One thing I have noticed recently tanking in long fights (such as Tiamat) is that a few points of enmity really do make no difference since you cap your CE and VE very fast (both as nin/drk and pld/nin) and after that is pretty easy to keep it capped. Only case I can see where you might really wanna stack on all the enmity you can is to get to the cap even faster, but after that id take a -4% damage over 3 enm etc all the time.

Also Parade gorget really is a piece I only use to rest mp or when cotanking in rare occasions where your mp really gets low...

Hmm, interesting topic. I find myself for the most part straight tanking (/nin or /war) to be using the Shield Torque now, enmity isn't an issue and I would rather block more and have a 100% spell interrupt during that block than take 2/4% less dmg. I see Jamal's point of having some ridiculously awesome -dmg% set, but most of that set is almost impossible for a normal player to get. Now for PLDs who have no Ritter gorget and only have the shield, well it just makes no sense in my book. My LS has yet to attempt Sarameya but I'm thinking the Beast Killer trait on Koenig Shield, even if it procs rarely, would be better than the small dmg reduction and the Shield Skill loss of pairing the Ritters.
Now for full timing a Parade Gorget, I do do that but only during Kited monsters where I shouldn't be and usually am not taking damage for most of the time to stay up on my MP pool.

I'm not in disagreement with you, but I'll reiterate that Jamal did vouch for that fact when he outlined that setup in his post.
