Well, last week I unlocked ninja, and as is my habit with new jobs I decided it was time to pick a few pieces of choice gear and go get them, level sync be damned. After soloing to 10 in Sarutabaruta, I decided I would get the Bounding Boots and a Gassan before continuing on my path to utsusemi, fame and glory.

Turns out, Leaping Lizzie is a stone cold bitch.

I spent most of Wednesday night running around South Gustaberg, desperately hoping for a glimpse of this most notorious of Notorious Monsters, killing an endless stream of rock lizard placeholders and wondering if I had ever seen so much brown and grey in my life. After 5 hours of painful searching - while countercamped by two other silent blues - Lizzie spawned in front of me! My heart pounding in my chest, assuming that despite this fortune a ranger was seconds away from claiming my lovely mob, I spammed the dia macro so hard that my system crashed.

When I came back Lizzie was gone.

Tonight I logged on with a renewed determination. Those of you who remember me from waaay back in 2007 know that I camped Spiny Spippi for most of a week to obtain my Mist Silk Cape, and one day of setbacks was nothing to this hardened Tarutaru hunter. Today I had the area to myself, and over the course of 6 hours I manged to spawn, claim, and kill Leaping Lizzie 2 times. Sadly, she did not drop my item.

The good times started shortly thereafter. Nightshade, a 60+ monk from Italy who speaks flawless English, entered the zone and noticed what I was doing. He offered to help, and I saw that he was on my Friend List. I started trying to remember why, when he told me "A couple months ago you spent an hour teaching me how to fish. Since then I have had a lot of fun with this craft, so I want to thank you."

I remembered angling off the docks in Port Windurst, reeling in Bastore Bream with my trusty Lu Shang, as a newbie fisherman struggled with Bastore Sardines next to me. We had talked for some time, and I had given him some tips and suggestions, answered his questions, added him to my friend list and then promptly forgotten about him. But he didn't forget about me.

Over the next two hours we worked together to spawn Lizzie four more times, and in the end she dropped the boots. But that's not what this post is about. Over those two hours, Nightshade and I discussed fishing, the english language, ffxi, the astral flow / korolokka tunnel exploit (40k experience in 3 minutes? seriously?), his aging mother who didn't believe he was talking to an American, and a host of other things. It was two of the most fun hours I've had in game in a long time, capped with the cherry of my boots dropping. He was selfless and committed, and now when I see him on my Friend List, I know why.

Tonight reinforced a lesson I learned long ago: help people because it feels good, and because sometimes you will reap rewards you never expected. Thanks for your help Nightshade! I'll see you around ;)

Undoubtedly the best Good Times post I've read in a looong time. Sounds like you had a lot of fun and I'm happy for you. Congratulations! Enjoy your new pair of boots! :)

Congrats on the boots, and Astral flows aren't an exploit >>.

Woah woah woah, what about my last couple of good times posts?

Kidding lol

Congrats on the boots and everyone should have that "help people because it feels good not because you get something out of it" attitude.

Congratulations on your new boots and your new friend! Thanks for taking the time to share your experience with us, it was a good read. ^^

This story was unreal. Awesome man. Congrats on your boots and good Karma.

Give a man to fish and he'll eat for a day, teach a man to fish and he'll help you camp Leaping Boots later.

Theres nothing fun about LL. 0/27 and I've given up -.-

Grats on those boots. ^^

Crumpet - one day you'll be riding into Bastok, and out of the corner of your eye you'll spy her... that will be the day you get the boots and satisfaction. Until then, keep your spirits up! And thanks for the thanks :)
