The guys over at http://thespeedgamers.com are doing a week long Final Fantasy Marathon to raise money for a charity.

I would have thought someone had posted this here already, but I guess not.

About Us
TheSpeedGamers have been streaming video game marathons for
over a year to raise money for various charities. In total they have
raised over $32,000 dollars and played 11 marathons.

TheSpeedGamers are based in the Dallas-Fort Worth area of Texas,
but have members from around the world.

I'm willing to bet they'll die of boredom before they get to VIII.
Such a shame, because IX's the best one in the series.

I think they said they're doing VII later today.

they are going out of order, and each game is being played by a different person- so they will get to 9 , dont worry lol

I really love what these guys are doing for this charity, it's a very worthy cause. It's also fantastic to see that they are extremely close to their mark within 4 days!

They are doing really well... they managed to hit their goal for the entire week in 72 hrs so they changed their goal from 20k to 50k.

I never understood the "do blah blah" for charity thing. Why not be sponsored doing something of value, like clean up trash in a dirty area or something else that's actually doing good.

People help where and how they can/want to. While I get what you're sayin' it also comes to light that they could just do it for fun and nothin' else as well. In their defense the DFW area is pretty well maintained by their respective city workers, it's a very neat place for the most part. Areas that could probably use some cleanin', and I say probably because I dare not venture, are pretty "dangerous" areas. Places in Dallas are either exceptionally well maintained, the majority of the city, or slummy. The bad spots are bad for a reason. I've been to a lot of major cities in the U.S. and the DFW area is by far one of the cleanest major cities, imo. I haven't been to Houston though, as odd is that is. They could do other things, besides pickin' up trash, I know, but then we just hit the loop of what I said earlier.

I'm sure someone in their circle of friends found a charity close to him for some reason, be it they've helped him or a loved on in his life, etc., etc. I'm sure that's the main reason they do anything at all instead of nothin'. We also don't know what else, they as individuals may or may not do.

Edit: Dur, didn't notice Dejavu's post XP

In any case they are up to $25k at this time and they are playing FFVII. They will be playing FFXI at the end of the week. Oh and EVERY character they get in FFVII they will name Sephiroth. For teh lulz.

not for teh lulz, the top contributor ( Calvin with a donation over 1.2k ) had honors of naming all the characters in ff7.
for some odd reason he chose sephiroth lol

My mistake then.

Doing anything for charity is nice, just because it's not of "value" doesn't mean it's a waste. Clearly what they're doing is enjoyable, people like to watch it, and they obviously get donations.

I have something setup with my paycheck so that every hour of work I do, 25 cents is donated to an animal shelter. So over the course of a long time, it's added up to be a decent amount. To me this is a more sensible kind of charity. I am supporting the charity by giving a part of something I do that's of real value. I don't feel that people doing things like charity walks and the such is in the same vein. They're doing... nothing. It's the people donating that are helping. They're simply asking those people for help. The walking, or playing video games, is simply a credit grab, self assured smugness or whatever you want to call it. We can all list of tons of things these people can do, most of which is more unpleasant than walking or playing videogames, that would probably raise a lot more cash but be less pleasant for them - requiring physical effort or tolerance of something gross - because it would be performing a community service. So I feel fairly indifferent to these things.

right, these guys are not really doing anything of Actual value.. however what they are doing is bringing a Ton of attention to the charity it self. not all charitys get donations, but people are much more likely to donate something that hits close to home.

you have to realize these are just kids... not a company.. their resources are limited...
what are some things that most kids have? video games.. the internet... and lots of free time..
the point youre missing is that these kids are going out of their way to bring attention to a charity to support a cause

how many charity have you seen ran from someones bed room? this is a first for me

Exactly, sure they aren't doing something of 'value', but they're doing something they enjoy and something that many others clearly enjoy themselves. It's an awareness raiser, if anything, and clearly it's working. They're not sacrificing anything, but does raising money for something require them to sacrifice? Nah, nope, not a chance.

They're clean, organized, friendly, and likable people. They are doing something, they're attracting people to watch something, spreading their name around the internet and other media outlets (such as the radio and even their local news), and getting gamers and people who feel good when they donate to come together. I just don't see why it has to be "of value".
