Things you like to see from a WHM

I didn't read most the above but most know what they are talking about... I just hit 60 and I did so rather quickly I'd like to think.. so here's my advice.

ALWAYS Have Reraise up.. it's a lot of MP but that's not a big deal..
You -should- own, Pilgrim's Wand (+2hmp) Seer's Tunic (+9mp/+1hmp).. very easy to get.. if you can afford them, Baron's Slops (+1hmp) .. that willl last till 50.. now at 50 I HIGHLY suggest Anti-Venom Earring (+15mp/+1hmp) its just hot.
51 Dark Staff.. no substitute, must have...

For exping! as said, keep RR up.. with a nin tank, after you buff, toss up Barelement (based on mobs you fight) then Bareffect(if applicable). Then as the puller gets back, haste the nin. I then follow this by Dia (and I personally went without good nins/rdms/blms for a lot so I Para/Slow'd too). When you get flash, I'd toss that every timee I saw the nin take a hit or a melee start taking hits. I always hasted (read above for Haste order) and I always lived with Regen. Never let Regen drop from the tank, and keep it up on the 2nd voke too. If the puller takes a few hits? Regen.
Try to avoid big spells... I used Cure II as primary cure up till and still often to 60... Cure III on ocasion is okay, but be sure you can afford the hate. Try not to use Cure IV unless its dire need.
If you fight damage AoE mobs (like gobs) after the fight, don't hesitate to toss a Curaga, or even if the mob is around 10% and you havent cured too much. Will save you a lot of trouble of curing each person individually.
With a pld tank, Regen is an absolute must.. I suggest hasting at MOST 3 people including tank, this way if they get smacked up, you have the MP.

So to summerize for lazy readers ;p
Priority:
Reraise
Haste
Regen
Barspells/Protect/Shell
Cure II

And use cookies, Ginger Cookies = life.

heal drk when he/she do souleater ...

if the drk is a noob and use it on bad time ya let him die :P

Yes, erase should be a must and most whms shouldn't really lvl whm any further unless they have erase. It was pretty bad once when I was in an exp pty with my rdm around 65 and the whm in our pty still didn't have erase... We were fighting Dhalmels in Bibiki Bay, and defense down can really suck on a tank, especially plds.

Just as rdms are known to be refresh whores, whms should be known to be regen whores :)

People not dying is always a good one. Know how to cure, because it IS your job and it's pretty noticable when you suck at it.

Haste tank >> slow melee(drk, sam) >> fast melee (mnk, war/nin, thf, drg).

Having all of the -na's and using them without the tank spamming "silenced" or "paralyzed" for half of the fight.

NOT meleeing ever, and staying the hell away from any TP moves unless you're running up for a buff.
tank>fast melle>your self> slow melle

Reraise is your friend. I can't stress that enough. As a healer, it's your duty to keep your party standing and to get them back on their feet as quickly as possible in the event of a wipe.

Don't wait until it looks like a situation is turning sour to try and cast it, either. That's like fumbling for your seatbelt when you see an oncoming car crossing the center line -- you likely will not have enough time or MP.

Reraise lasts one hour, and Protect and Shell last thirty minutes. Get yourself in the habit of reapplying Reraise ASAP after putting up buffs and you'll never have to worry about it dropping (unless you're fighting dispelling mobs, of course).

I don't know how many times I've been in a party when something goes wrong and had someone start yelling at me to use Reraise because they didn't notice all the other times I cast it. It always makes me laugh.

One thing that all people should do is to never, ever, listen to Blazn.

Sorry to semi-derailing this...
But Mr. Rones, having Conserve MP but no Max MP Boost = you occasionally spend less MP, but have less MP.
Max MP Boost = You always spend full MP, but have much more.

Unless Conserve MP kicks in more than usual, aren't you pretty much gonna run out of MP at roughly the same rate?

Also, saying SMN "only has Aerial Armor" is really underrating the sub. WHM/SMN can get free Carby very easily, and I'd rather he hold off an "oops, agro" than trying to cast Sleep in, say, Ro'Maeve or Ve'Lugannon.

Five times...you are kidding right? On my time lvling whm to 75 I would typicaly cast sleep 4-5 times per level and escape once every third or fourth party. It was incredibly helpful in boyada. More mp is meaningless. That's why an elvaan whm is just as effective as a taru whm. When you never use the bottom 400 of your mp tank it doesn't matter if you had 10,000 mp or 700, it would work exactly the same. Max mp is just what we persue when there is nothing else available.

By your argument Conserve MP is useless too. and ES + Aspir too.

And I don't think I used tractor, or sleep, a single time through my WHM career, mainly because if there's a link, you have the BRD, RDM, and BLM all with much more potent sleep than your own.

I also don't remember ever casting escape with my WHM, mainly because it was never needed in a single exp party. If your RDM can't handle 2, or even 3, links at 51+, they seriously need to retire their RDM.

And Auto Refresh by itself is not extremely usefull, but together with Noble's Tunic, its suddenly a whole lot more effective, and together with Refresh, its even more effective. And especially in end-game activities SMN sub is superior. When a mob can hit for 100+ a hit, Aerial Armor saves you a whole lot of MP with 2 PLD tanks.

Personally, I prefer SMN sub over BLM sub, but I also have BLU, RDM, BLM and BRD in case I need to sub those.

Meh I melee all the time though I am selective on what I melee playing WHM. (Goblins No Thanks). Theres nothing better than showing a melee DD player how gimp they are when they're getting out damaged by the WHM who's still healing the pt. :P Also the whole meleeing WHM idea works best when you have a competant Ninja tanking though its easily doable with a PLD with enough food items and later with refresh or ballads (or in some pts getting both)

Best thing of all about it is you dont end up spending weeks skilling club up at 70+ to get Hexa Strike. :P

And the "Gives the mob too much TP" argument is void in the fact ppl think its OK for someone to offhand a K club thats about the same as 4 WHM's hitting a mob with wands. :p

Ah, everyone's favorite dead pony... /BLM vs /SMN.

I applaud any WHM who got through their career and never had to use Escape or Tractor. I've used both enough that I feel naked when I go WHM/SMN.

I was in a KRT party a few days back, and I remember thinking how /SMN would be handy for the buffs and to stack an extra tick of Auto-Refresh for all the running around we were doing... right up until there were deaths that needed Tractor to resolve.

It's a simple playstyle issue. Both have their merits.

Just thought I would point out that most people dont think thats ok in an xp situation. Kinda makes your point reguarding the validity of other's arguments invalid. The irony amuses me.

Only time the KFC gets busted out for 'Serious Business' is in the Mamool Ja Training grounds assault, where we want them to do craploads of WS to break down the door.

I whole-heartedly agree. It all depends on the setup of the party too. I'm one of those whm who have used escape in exp once the whole time I have been white mage and sleep maybe once. Maybe I have been in some kickass parties, but the few times we've needed escape or tractor, the party had a blm or /blm. Depends on the mission/quest as well. Some things require that skill set, some don't. It just really matters what you're trying to do and what jobs you're trying to do it with.

One situation in which I always use BLM sub is sky farming. That's it. Its the only situation I've been in that requires me subbing BLM for my WHM past-50

I know for a fact that Kclub off hand works good with pld/nin in exp. iv seen videos.

WHM meleeing in exp? thats a good way to not get invites. your going to sacrifce your very key healing time to hit the mob for about 200 damg? no thanks.

EDIT: and BLM SMN subs, nothing i enjoy more then casting RR3 for like 100-150(never really paid close attention) when it cost 200 mp to do so, with all the cures and haste you will be spaming Conserve MP ends up being very nice. Only time i ever really used SMN was during Kirin and some god fights. just had 2 whms running around with Aerial Armor on the kiters/tanks.

Yes, the last few posts should demonstrate it better than anything else ... there's definitely no "consensus" on the /blm vs. /smn debate.

To borrow a trick from you, Rones:

Rones said:
When no one counters the points made, it is considered to be a consensus.

From dictionary.com:

2 entries found for consensus.
con·sen·sus ( P ) Pronunciation Key (kn-snss)
n.
An opinion or position reached by a group as a whole: “Among political women... there is a clear consensus about the problems women candidates have traditionally faced” (Wendy Kaminer). See Usage Note at redundancy.
General agreement or accord: government by consensus.

Nobody else should pay attention to that, as it doesn't mean a thing ... it's kind of an inside joke. ^^;

At any rate, the battle very much rages on, and by sheer virtue of that fact alone, a consensus can't exist. Whether or not you feel point for counterpoint from either side have been equally addressed is irrelevant: it means nothing regarding communal opinion. In point of fact, I and others would disagree with you on even that argument. Every significant /BLM benefit can just about be counter-argued by a /SMN one, and vice versa. Perhaps you don't feel they are equal counter-arguments, but that doesn't mean they aren't there.

You can champion the cause of /BLM or /SMN, yes, but nobody can pretend that the superiority of either is something accepted by the FFXI community at large as undeniable truth. No, there has been no resolution to this particular dead horse.

That's really the most concise way of putting it, and was my big-picture point in a nutshell: that the reason nobody but the hardcore champions of either side claims that a satisfactory conclusion regarding "which is better" has been reached is because ... well, they're so close to being equal. Different, and stronger in different situations, but neither just deadpan, obviously "better" than the other.

All righty!

Now that we've pretty much arrived once again at that impasse that will most likely always be waiting at the end of this particular debate, here's something that I find to be extremely beneficial from my Whm:

Regen.

Please.

As often and as on as many people as you can.

I've always found it best to avoid single-target curing non-tanks altogether unless the situation truly calls for it. If someone gains hate for a moment, but quickly loses it back to the tank, they should just get incorporated into the Regen cycle established by the Whm and/or Rdm, in my opinion.

Well if you ppl couldn't tell. 1 I was being a smartass and 2. I fall asleep lvling WHM the cookie cutter way. Theres a reason my BRD is lv 1 still and IMO my way is more fun which is what I care about.

And also I've had a fair number of parties while xping that had a JP NIN or THF offhanding a Kclub. Processionaires spamming cocoon every 10 seconds No Thanks.

Have the guts to Flash when it needs to be done and despite it being said and discussed very thoroughly, it can't be pointed out enough, haste your tank like a champ!
