This is Fucked up, Cops should get sued and go to Jail

But from what I saw, he was just a kid with an attitude and a point to make, trying to get answers. He wasn't acting erratically, he wasn't waving a weapon... I think that the university police were way, WAY out of line. Number one, they should never have put their hands on the kid, and number two, tasering someone for asking a question is borderline fascist.

Kids with attitudes can carry a gun whether they wave it around or not.

Erratically no, and sure he walked up all nicelike.

Just because he didn't pose an immediate threat, didn't mean he couldn't with his attitude on display for everyone to see.

Plain and simple, if fucker stowed the attitude and maintained a degree of civility, he wouldn't have been tased like a bitch resisting arrest.

facist my ass, him get taserd had NOTHING to do with what he was trying to ask or even IF he was trying to ask a question, it has to do with someone refusing to comply to a perfectly legitimate request from police officers multiple times, and then Physically resisting when they tried to remove him,

nowhere in the constitution does it give you the right to be a total douche bag and hog a mic in a public debate without anyone interrupting you.

now if he had been on his own property or a public event setup BY him then yes, i'd agree. but this wasn't HIS event, therefor the police had every right to ask him to step down and they had every right to physically remove him when he refused multiple times.

the taser part is a completely separate issue, resisting arrest = a taser in your ass.

Here is the article I read which accompanied the video. They were not waiting for him. They came to him when they considered his time to be up apparently.

And Lecrueset, last I checked, at a public discussion, when you invite questions, you should expect to get ones you consider undesierable. The only reason people are acting like the kid deserved it was the manner in which he asked them. He was rude and loud, but there was nothing in his demeanor if you watch the video that suggests he is going to be violent at all until someone put their hands on him. And I'm fucking sorry, but if I'm doing nothing but asking a question at a forum designed for that and someone puts their hands on me, you bet your ass I'm going to resist as well. This is the US, not fucking China.

By TRAVIS REED - Associated Press Writer

GAINESVILLE, Fla.(AP) A university student with a history of taping his own practical jokes was Tasered by campus police and arrested after loudly and repeatedly trying to ask U.S. Sen. John Kerry questions during a campus forum.

Andrew Meyer, 21, spent a night in jail before his release from jail Tuesday morning on his own recognizance. He had no comment when he left. His attorney, Robert Griscti, did not return messages seeking comment.

Videos of the Monday night incident, posted on several Web sites and played repeatedly on television news, show University of Florida police officers pulling Meyer away from the microphone after he asks Kerry about impeaching President Bush and whether he and Bush were both members of the secret society Skull and Bones at Yale University.

University spokesman Steve Orlando said Meyer was asked to leave the microphone after his allotted time was up. Meyer can be seen refusing to walk away and getting upset that the microphone was cut off.

As two officers take Meyer by the arms, Kerry, D-Mass., can be heard saying, "That's all right, let me answer his question."

Audience members applaud, and Meyer struggles for several seconds as up to four officers try to remove him from the room. Meyer screams for help and tries to break away from officers with his arms flailing at them, then is forced to the ground and officers order him to stop resisting.

As Kerry tells the audience he will answer the student's "very important question," Meyer yells at the officers to release him, crying out, "Don't Tase me, bro," just before he is shocked by the Taser. He is then led from the room, screaming, "What did I do?"

Meyer was arrested on charges of resisting an officer and disturbing the peace, according to Alachua County jail records, but the State Attorney's Office had yet to make the formal charging decision. Police recommended charges of resisting arrest with violence, a felony, and disturbing the peace and interfering with school administrative functions, a misdemeanor.

University President J. Bernard Machen issued a statement Tuesday saying he requested the Florida Department of Law Enforcement to investigate the arrest. Officials said it would determine whether the officers used an appropriate level of force.

Machen called the situation "regretful" in an afternoon news conference and said two officers involved in the incident were placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the probe.

"We're absolutely committed to having a safe environment for our faculty and our students so that a free exchange of ideas can occur," Machen said.

Kerry said Tuesday he regretted that a healthy discussion was interrupted and that he never had a dialogue end that way in 37 years of public appearances. He also said he hoped neither the student nor police were injured.

"Whatever happened, the police had a reason, had made their decision that there was something they needed to do. Then it's a law enforcement issue, not mine," he told The Associated Press in Washington.

Meyer has his own Web site and it contains several "comedy" videos that he appears in. In one, he stands in a street with a sign that says "Harry Dies" after the latest Harry Potter book was released. In another, he acts like a drunk while trying to pick up a woman in a bar.

The site also has what is called a "disorganized diatribe" attributed to Meyer that criticizes the Iraq war, the news media for not covering the conflict enough and the American public for paying too much attention to celebrity news.

And I'm fucking sorry, but if I'm doing nothing but asking a question at a forum designed for that and someone puts their hands on me, you bet your ass I'm going to resist as well. This is the US, not fucking China.

Your perception of doing nothing wrong and what police/security see as a potential red flag/threat are two totally different views.

Rude and loud is enough to come off as such with a high profile public figure in the area... Even in a local bar, this is enough to be seen as someone worthy of being asked to leave, or have the establishment's security remove them. I've worked clubs down here as I'm sure most of my good friends are aware of, you don't take chances with the safety of your patrons or people in general...

If they're trying to restrain you to assess the situation and sort out wtf is really going on and you resist you just look like that much more of a threat to be neutralized.

If the kid posed no honest threat and calmed himself down a bit, who's to say the police wouldn't have escorted his happy ass back up to the mic and let him finish?

You're damn right it's the US.

But that's no excuse to parade around like you can do anything you want.

If I went around parading like an asshole down the street and a cop saw me and I refused to yield and let them know what was going on, they've every right to see what CAN happen and restrain/detain me.

Plain and simple, it's already high profile having Kerry there.

With what's been going on, you think a college-level student would have been smart enough to take into account the happenings at Virginia Tech and maybe approached this better.

He didn't, so he got tased.

Also just because Kerry wanted to hear/answer the question, DOES NOT supercede the potential safety issue at hand with this dipshit kid.

I wholeheartedly agree that people can say whatever they want and shouldn't be penalized for it in this manner(being tased), but the kid conducted himself rather inappropriately and was put down.

Cause you know, it's nice to say whatever we like; but I prefer my personal safety over listening to some pissed off kid who for all I know could be tweaking at his last moment of life trying to figure out whether to detonate the bomb that might be on his chest or pull out his automatic weapon and get gunned down by cops meeting certain/near-certain death. (Yes, extreme example... But you tell me it can't happen and I've got nothing for you but a facepalm.)

Simply put, the police may have jumped the gun pulling the wanker off the stage, but the second he started resisting instead of taking the handcuffs so he could calmly talk to the LEOs on-site and prove that he was no threat to Kerry or the crowd, he committed what is it, a felony? WHILE making the police look justified in taking him down for acting as the threat they perceived him to be.

The kid was probably harmless and was sportin' his attitude, but we've all got our different points of view to account for and with high profile public figures and being a LEO there to protect them and the crowd, better to err on the side of majority safety than to err on the side of minority "rights." If the kid was a threat and wound up capping Kerry or another crowd member, the cops would've gotten just as much shit for NOT doing their job. At least Meyer seemed to be big enough to just stow it and admit the cops were just trying to do their job.

Maybe he can make something of the situation and find a spot on a popular talk show and drag his questions out further or find a public televised forum with Kerry with some other students to PROPERLY address him with a degree of civility.

this wasnt about free speach. its about a severe desire for attention.

i think its well documented that this fool loves to be in the spotlight. and i agree with Lecreuset that if he kept his head and waited his turn Kerry probably would have answered his questions without complaint. but he chose to act like a fool and make a fuss to get his temproary claim to fame. i'd go as far as say he probably never wanted his questiones answered. just cooked up 2 that will create a stir and over dramatized it.

he got what he wanted, and deserved. he's probably happier then a pig in shit right now thinking his "plan" worked perfectly or something. but this will be forgotten in a week and he'll move onto something else to get everyone to look at him.

Yeah ok, he got what he wanted. To be doing nothing but asking a question in the U.S, home of free speech, and getting manhandled and tasered on camera. Appears he succeeded in proving that free speech isn't all it's cracked up to be.

You keep saying security risk Lec, and I think you're kidding yourself. The only violence I see in this guy is when someone else put their hands on him. He was asking a question, plain and simple. He wasn't violent until force was used. I don't see how asking a question is a danger to anyone in any way. There's a big difference between speech and actions. I can stand on a street corner and shout about the world ending if I want to. If I start grabbing people or impeding them in any way, that's different. You're confusing free speech with free action. Had the kid done something threatening, as I said, that would be one thing. All he did was stand at a mic and ask questions rudely. And being an asshole with no tact isn't illegal. And far from a taserable offence.

Bottom line is, if the officers acted appropriately, they would not have been suspended.

The police should have listened to Kerry when he said he would respond to his questions.
However, yelling like a bitch when you're being pulled away was totally unnecessary.

I just can't stand that attitude when the police go to take him away, and how he goes from the instigator to the innocent. And how you don't have to be a genius ot realize when they say they're gonna taze you if you keep resisting, to stop fucking resisting.

The girl at the end was classic, screaming in sheer terror at the guy getting tazed, like it's going to kill him.

It's pathetic. If you're gonna show some balls before you get arrested, do it after as well.

Plenty of tell-tale signs actions beforehand, like I said cops may have jumped the gun and with the big deal made by the crowd; it's better for public relations to smooth over the incident by putting them on leave.

He doesn't have to take action to be a perceived threat or receive a mental red flag from LEOs.

You can honestly tell me if you go somewhere where a specific tone and atmosphere is set and a comfortable feeling has been maintained for most of your stay and then to have someone come and get loud that you're not going to have the slightest bit of concern in the variance of that established atmosphere?

Atmosphere was broken, eyebrows were raised and maybe police jumped the gun.

They were resisted, Meyer got shocked.

As far as this thread goes, I think I'm beating a dead horse.

I respect and appreciate where your(everyone who thinks the kid didn't do anything wrong) views, however I see this as something we're not going to agree on.

I can agree that we're most definitely going to disagree so I'll leave this thread alone. With that said, unless someone cares to call me out specifically with something specific or something else that'd pique my interest in replying.

Edit: Something piqued my interested and I surface later in this thread, BEWARE!

I hear you. Personally, I think the kid was an irresponsible asshole if that makes you feel any better. If it had been me, I would have conducted myself more respectfully to begin with, and I understand where you are coming from to that end. I just strongly feel that excessive force was involved for such a minor thing is all. And respectfully agree to disagree with you on that point.

Oh you Americans... five officers and a tazer gun to restrain one kid.

I guess he should be grateful it was Kerry up there and not Bush. He'd already be halfway to Gitmo, being juiced by guys who make more money than the campus rent-a-cops.

The kid was acting like a douche bag but I do not agree with the use of a taser gun. =/

This got reported because the arrest was wrongful not to forget they were suppressing freedom of speech on a government supported university. This case could go to the supreme court which wouldn't surprise me at all. He wasn't creating a disruption by asking questions on an open microphone.

You're a moron, read the last 3 pages, they sum up everything I need to say.

So you can't make your own opinion? How was he creating a threat? Disturbing the peace? Then everyone asking questions was disturbing the peace. Did you know that 5,000,000 votes weren't accounted for? Didn't realize educating people was creating a disturbance. Did he look like he was going to beat people up if he didn't get his shot? Seriously the charges are crap. It didn't appear many people wanted to question Senator Kerry so I don't think going over 30 seconds (which isn't enough time imo) would have mattered much. If they don't want controversy than they shouldn't have open microphones. Jesus if you're going to be suspicious of one why not just arrest everyone that asked questions.

At least he was informed on what he was asking.

It's not about freedom of speech. Read the last 3 pages.

EDIT: After watching the video, i have to ask, why is anyone defending this guy? He asks the questions but doesn't allow Kerry to answer. I'm personally glad the cops shocked this guy. He was acting like an assclown.

Why would you even think this is about Freedom of Speech? The kid was an idiot.

I stated my opinion, the last 3 pages pretty much defined my opinion. The guy waslooking for trouble and he got it.

If he was so interested in his questions, he would of stfu and let Kerry answer him. He wasn't though, he was there to make a scene and just kept talking.

Open mics dont give you a right to act like an idiot, if you are going to ask questions, ask them, let the person answer, then ask another.

It was also stated this guy has a site where he makes an ass out of himself, which goes along with my opinion of the guy. He should be glad he wasn't black, he would of caught a hot one to the back.

i dont think you guys understand this is fucked up thats not the first time ive seen cops get away with dumb shit, did you guys see the video of a cop choking a girl in arkansas for standing there with a skateboard? seriously being arrested for asking a question thats just dumb maybe the kid was raising his voice but he sure as hell wasnt yelling and the taser was not needed, maybe he was acting up a bit but they couldve asked him to sit down not put him in hand cuffs..

Assuming he really thought he'd get away with hogging the mike and being disruptive (which, btw, definitely falls into the category of disturbing the peace), he forgot a simple fact:

Once the police make their move and take you into custody, it's too late to stop doing what you were doing. You've already broken the law, or at the very least given them cause to arrest you. Saying "okay, I'm done now, lemme go" doesn't work. The last dipshit student to get tasered found that out the hard way.
