Thompson and Obama on GTA (and etc.)

Heh, when playing, they actually recommend you take a cab though if you are drunk. Yes, in the end it is your choice, but the same options that exist in RL exist in the game. Catch a cab or drive drunk and get chased by the police. Is MADD going to sue RL too then?

Personally, I'm most impressed that Obama had the guts to stand up and call out Americans on this. Most politicians would never do something like that for fear of losing voters. And for once, a politician is making a public statement concerning the violence of video games that I can agree with... I never thought I would see the day when it would happen.

Jack Thompson... AWAAAAAAYYYY!!!!

Kudos to Obama for having the right stance on the adult video game issue. It's not enough to swing my vote, but kudos all the same.

This is a generally agreeable stance though, however talk is cheap, lets see some action...

Then again there wouldn't be much he could do if he became president to parents monitoring kids playing video games because that'd easily be considered...totalitarian or communistic?

Last time I tried that my guy was too drunk to call a cab.. how drunk do you have to be to not be able to say the word "taxi"

It's not impossible.

It took us two and a half hours to walk home that night...

Ever drank until you passed out, can't speak coherently whatsoever, and don't remember that evening?

Long Live December 1, 2007 for me. I'd blog that night if I could recall anything.

That's why I'd love it if parents took an interest and learned they could disable M-rated games on their kid's console.

Nah, that's too much trouble.

In all seriousness, I just haven't had the time to sit down and figure out the parental controls on the 360. I know it's got a timer, but I didn't know you can disable certain ratings. Ooooh, the kid is gonna hate that . . .

We moniter his video games pretty closely, though, when he's home. When he's at his friend's houses, he's allowed to play whatever their parents allow. But I also know if I said to him "I don't want you to play Grand Theft Auto, even if Timmy's parents let him play it" he wouldn't. And I know this not because I'm blindly saying "my little boy is an angel", but because he brought it up and he told me that if I said there are games he's not allowed no matter where he is or what the rules are, he would respect that.

My younger brother who is 12 knows he can't play GTA IV, I haven't put up a restriction on my 360, and I have just told him once. He doesn't even enter the room when my cousin(22) is playing it, he simply asks what we are doing and says ok call me when your done. The game doesn't get hidden or nothing it is kept with the rest of our games, He also just doesn't like how much swearing and blah blah there is in the game.

Now my lil bro is no angel he does do some stupid things at times but then what child hitting puberty doesn't? He plays Dynasty warriors with my and what not, but that's because i am there and he knows that it is just a game and he can't wield a spear like the character etc etc.

All i am tryna say is Obama was right, if the Parents/Gaurdians aren't responsible, you can't blame the game developers...it's fuckin stupid. I also read somewhere in this thread about a grandmother buying her 12 year old gson the game...thats stupid

Yes. I completely understand grandparents wanting to do things for their grandkids, buy them special things that there parents have said "I'm not getting you that", but there needs to be a reasonable line - communication between parents/grandparents. It's one thing to buy the 60$ Collectors Edition Barbie doll, or the 300$ stunt bike or whatever because parents have said that's too much (Hell, what are grandparents for, really? ;) ) It's another thing entirely to be purchasing games or movies that they know nothing about.

I am exceedingly lucky in my mom in that respect. She's told my son (and us) that she'll buy him all the books and outdoor-play stuff (sports equipment, camping/hiking gear, beach toys, bubbles, riding lessons, etc.) she can reasonabley get him, but she won't buy him video games at all, and he can only expect to get movies she's already seen.

And your mum is a better grandparent/parent for it.
