Whether or not its doable, i kind of want to see. gear wise, i'm looking at +25 enfeebling magic, and +22 elemental magic, 87 total int, a mana pool around 600, and hps of 900. i just hit 66, so i'll be capping my skill while i hunt my testimonies. right now my highest damaging spell will be stone III. basically, i want to try this now as opposed to 69/70 because it's just pushing the limits of my class, whether or not the RDM maat is alot of luck (from what i gather).

anyway, battle plan will be to straight to maat and sleep him and dispel his buffs. i'll throw up a gravity and stone III him and kite him as much as possible, though with the long casting time, i don't know how much luck i'll have. then i'll sleep again, and rest if i can and reapply stoneskin/blink. phalanx seems like a joke because it won't mitigate that much relative to maats total dmg. chainspell and nuke my way down as much as i can, throw down the third (hopefully final) sleep, convert and finish my chainspell. hopefully he's dead.

any thoughts suggestions comments etc will be greatly appreciated ^^.

Don't. That's the best recommendation I can give you. Yes, it would be a great accomplishment to defeat Maat at level 66 and I can safely say there are players out there who have defeated him at level 66, but I still suggest to wait until you are 70. Level 70 gives you +19 enfeebling magic, +10 elemental magic and probably +3-4 INT as well which is a very large sum when you look at it. That compounded with the expense most players go through to defeat Maat, you should consider attempting him when you have the best chance of defeating him. Most players attempt him at least twice (some try up to 20 times) and spend a bare minimum of a couple hundred thousand gil to defeat him each time. Spending that much gil with a fairly certain loss is not only unwise, but stupid.

If you have gil, go for it. Maat can be expensive though.

I really don't see why it is necessary to call those who want to attempt something that is very risky stupid. Cost is relative, to some the cost is so high that they couldn't afford to lose, ever, others have enough luck and acumen to come by gil so that cost is not a factor at all. (... and for everyone, please don't start with "OMG Maat at 66, gilbuyer!! kkthxbai").

The odds are clearly not in one's favor at 66, however, attempting it is probably one of those things that makes the game worth playing. You do everything you can for your level, you prepare, you count on some luck, and you try it. If you are not hung up on the gil, then you will have an awesome fight, and if you lose, then so be it, at least you have tried.

Failure is not the opposite of success.

In my experience as a RDM and fighting Maat a couple of times (once at 66, like yourself) I found that it was much easier to do so after 70. Though, marginally, RDM Maat is a lot about luck and hope that sleep sticks. If you want to fight him at 66, more power to you. Bring a lot of meds though, you'll need them.

Otherwise, some simple tips:

Never cast silence on him. This may seem like a good idea, but when he's punching you in the face so hard even a Cure V won't help.. well..

<3Bind. Keep Bind on him as much as possible. This way all he can do is cast and his spells, while of the painful owmyface type, are a lot better to eat than his punches.

Keep as much distance from him as you possibly can. Whoa doggy. You really want to get close to someone as old as Sculli's signature? I think not. He's probably already soiled his depends for the day.

Good luck!

I wouldn't bother with Phalanx because it's not going to do that much for you if he manages to get close. Sleep, Sleep II and Bind are all your friends. I'd also wait until you have better spells since Stone spells are so weak compared to everything else. Load up on meds, of course. I think I ended spending around two million gil on meds in all my attempts. And 900 HP isn't a lot when he manages to get to you and opens with Asuran Fists. Even with Stoneskin up he might single shot you or knock you deep into the red.

A RDM who posts on these forums as Blowy gave me the final advice that helped me get through it after seven or so attempts.

I said it's stupid because it is. Would you throw away a lot of gil at a small chance or throw away gil at a larger chance? There is no harm in waiting 4 levels to attempt Maat; however, there is at attempting him at level 66. 19 levels of enfeebling magic is huge and roughly equavalent to spending millions of gil to get it and even then, there is not enough gear to make up for that skill loss (You can get more in gear but most of it is considered standard so you are still at a loss compared to the standard). Enfeebling torque (+7) goes for 3-4 mil, a enfeebling earring (+3) goes for 4mil. That huge loss of skill level is definately a make or break when even level 70's have trouble sleeping Maat. Now compound that with addition of gil on consumable items which many spend a good fortune just attempting once let alone the subsequent times till they finally achieve victory. Plus the time spent farming a red mage testimony. That's not just your time either, it takes a group to get testimonies and could take awhile to get one (RDM do seem to drop quite frequently in sky off pots, but that's not all the time).

It's not a matter of rich or poor, gil buying or not. It's a matter of waste. Nothing can replace 4 job levels in defeating Maat. No food. No armor. Why? Because all those level 70s have the same options and even they had trouble defeating Maat. When you pick a fight, isn't it stupid to pick a fight with someone bigger than you? Same thing. Pick a fight with someone your own size (in this case level).

It would be one thing to attempt it just to see what it's like and have some ideas, but to spend gil and expect to win is just dumb. You would be throwing away your money, time and effort for a sure loss.

Maat for rdm is luck at any lvl. Sometimes every enfeeb sticks and other times you might be lucky to land sleep/sleep2. What I found is the best method : buff up when you enter, run in bind or sleep (if blink blocks it) then chainspell dispell until shell is gone and spam nukes, sleep on low mp, convert and contimue nuking. You wont need meds at all if you can do it this way. dispelling shell will end the fight quickly. Tried and tested it works.

Sounds to me like Lavi's never done the CoP missions, unless she easy-street'd her way through.

Anyway, RDM Maat, it's really recommended you wait until Aero III to do it, since your spell damage isn't exactly strong enough to dwarf his.

I disagree with this very much. If you can appropriately keep him silenced/bound/asleep/gravity, any mixture of the above, there is absolutely no reason for him to get close enough to punch you unless if you have a very unfortunate series of resists - in which case, silenced or not he'll probably still beat the poop out of you.

Just my experience.

This is true. I was just gearing from my experience as well. Although if he/she is going in at 66, there are going to be resists. I'd rather have Maat stop halfway to cast something so I can pull a Sleep, Sleep II, or Bind at him. If he's silenced he'll just run and gun straight for you.

You beat Maat to get past 70. Can't get to 71 until you beat the old bastard.

That said, if you want to try now, go for it.
Do it for yourself though, because nobody really cares when you get past him, just if you did or did not.

As THF, I meleed Maat. Who cares.
I did it for me, because I wanted to kill him.
Aiming for that, I took my sweet time and calculated his death...
And kept going.

If it's a personal goal, best of luck. Go prepared...Completely prepared, especially at 66. If it's for any other reason, I'd say wait till 70...There's really no rush. ^^

(I loved aly's response to this thread, I got some giggles :) )

Well, maat for any job really is half luck, a quater skill and a quater timing really. Go in on darksday for bonuses to your Sleeps and enfeebles, this will really help you I feel. Like aly said, maybe silence isn't the best enfeeble to cast on someone who throws punches like ali, so I'd say try land gravity and bind on him, then go for paralyze while he's still catching some zzz's, it has the chance of stopping an III going off in your face.

I'm tempted to say don't convert unless you have JUST slept him, if he wakes up while your at below 100 HP you can happily say goodbye to life, hello to the floor.

I'd suggest looking up some maat videos from say here: http://killingifrit.com/forums.php?m=topics&s=64

Good luck!

Huh? Completed CoP missions, but I don't see the connection between the two. All I know is I can barely enfeeble a mob that's T without my WHM AF body and with it, I can enfeeble it every time. Don't think it's a coincidence and I don't think it's luck. Now my AF is +10 skill just like the RDM AF which is considered mandatory for the fight and it's about half the skill lost from 66 to 70 (19 exactly) so I don't see how a huge loss should be considered lightly. I know a lot of RDMs who failed at level 70 and did so with capped everything so I know it shouldn't be taken it so lightly. This isn't like WHM where a single level is a loss of 10 MP which I can more than make up for with a single ether. Nothing can make up for 19 skill levels not even equipment especially when most of the +enfeebling gear is considered standard for the fight and most of the RDM who attempted and failed had that gear.

Like I said, go into the fight at 66 and test the waters if you want. See how the fight goes and see what to expect. There's no exp loss, but you will need to farm a new testimony. Ask other RDMs and most of them probably attempted it several times and spent a small fortune at level 70. At 66, expect to pay lot more to win a tougher fight. Or level to 70 for the godly +19 enfeebling skill and save yourself the time, effort and gil.

I'm not sure whether anyone touched on this, but being 4 levels below Maat will also mean your Enfeebling Skill will be pretty underlevelled, meaning that your sleep (which isn't too reliable at 70) is even more likely to be resisted.

If you decide to do it, go on Darksday, because Sleep (rather than your damage spells) is what will make or break you...

Better off going on the day of the strongest nuke you have. Its almost 50/50 that sleep/sleep2 will stick on every cast. the 5 times I fought him, he never used a tp move, just casted weak nukes/enfeebs and kicked me in the face a few times. If you have the mp, just dispell his shell, bind and waste him with nukes.

Unfortunalely, a 50% stick rate on Sleep will get you killed almost every time...

If you can reliably sleep him (at 70 with capped enfeebling on Darksday he'd sleep about 80%) then it doesn't matter if it takes you an extra nuke to kill him. If you can't rely on sleeping him, then you won't get the chance to use the 7-8? Earth IIIs needed to kill him.

You can if you don't rely on sleep. His spells are weak so if u can hold him with bind your set. If you like danger, don't cure after convert so you can use that mp to nuke.

I'm fairly certain Maat scales with you, in level anyway. He was just as difficult at 66, 68, 70x2 and 75. The only difference was me screwing up less.
