I'm surprised no one has mentioned it, but the colorful cover is more a eastern style common to India, not Japan. Here is a couple samples of art textures in India:
Katamari Damacy also wasn't Japanese in its art. It was more of an Arabian middle east style, which is the entire theme for the new empire.
