I had to make this post because if I have to log into another website and fill in 87 fields just to click submit and watch my personal information evaporate into nothingness I'm going to punch someone.

Call me old fashioned but I remember a time, not too long ago, when you could fax or email your resume to A HUMAN BEING and actually call someone to speak in hr about the job if you need to.

Now virtually every major corporate website has these BULLSHIT career sections where they would, "love to hear from you" but "Please DO NOT email your resume". Instead you spend 20 mins per website inputting all your private information into their giant corporate database only to never hear anything from them ever again other that the jerk-off confirmation email spam that always ends up in your junk box with bold letters, "please don't reply to us".

They don't tell you WHEN they will contact you, if you don't get the job they NEVER tell you anything, you can't even email to see if the job is still available. Your left sitting at home cock in hand hoping some corporate self important fuck head will call you.

Even when I go to career fair's everytime one of these snot nosed douches tell me to upload my resume into there website I want to throw hot coffee in their face. Why do they think I'm there? To get one of their cheap pens? God forbid they give me any job advice on how to actually get an interview with a human. Am I to believe someone with a Master's Degree and a 3.9 GPA can't even get a god damn interview?

Things are that bad???? Then shut down your fucking bullshit asshat websites and stop making me WASTE MY GOD DAMN TIME on what is basically masturbation without the payoff.

(Sorry for the bad grammar and incoherent rambling, kinda pissed at the moment.)

My dad needs some more workers, fancy coming to England?

Please note: No lazy assholes to apply, he will fire you.

Man, I feel ya there Tom. My wife went thru the same thing when lookin for a job. She would go to all these "job fairs" only to get told: "Oh well if you are interested in applying please go to our website and we will contact you afterwards." What a crock of shit. She finally managed to get a decent job by answering a radio ad of a place hiring a shit ton of people. Keep on truckin man, if you're as smart as you say you are, I'm sure someone will notice ^^

P.S. Yeah damn good article JP, kudos

For what it’s worth, my husband is having the same experience. In fact, even the "jerk-off confirmation emails" are rare. All I can say is what everyone else is saying around here. It’s a shitty, shitty time to be out of work and employers are inundated or simply rude because they can afford to be. I'm keeping mental notes. Times won't always be this bad and someday they might ask for my business....

That article is right about one thing. HR departments are lacking actual humans. At the company I work at ours was recently slashed in half. I work there and I can’t find anyone to help me.

Best of luck.

You can always try pounding the pavement. We depend to heavily on the internet for job searching. Face to Face will always be best. Just make sure you're asking for someone with some authority rather than some random part-timer.. ;p

There are a few sites here that do exactly that, take your shit and evaporate. I don't tend to use those sites, I source out equal opportunity agencies and look at their postings. Or there is a provincial site, HRDC, that comes in handy. There's always the classifieds in the paper.

Online applications were all dead ends when I was job hunting last summer. It was frustrating as hell.
What you want to do is hound people at job fairs. Make a good impression there and weasel your way into someone's consciousness so that someone on the other end is expecting your application and wants to get back to you. Ask for contact info too, that tends to make them think you're more serious or at least make them realize they'll have to deal with you on a more personal level. Eliminate the anonymity of the internet and they'll have a lot more trouble brushing you off.
That's how I managed to get people to actually call me about employment possibilities.

Ever consider starting your own company? It used to be, that job market was so good that it wasn't worth the extra effort to be an entrepreneur, but really, the only one who's guaranteed to hire you is you, and I'm willing to bet the only boss you'll really get along with is you. I'm starting my own cafe - took me a couple years to make every mistake once along the way, but if I had known then what I know now I could've been going last year. Getting the loan is the hard part, but if you start your company in certain areas, the government has programs to help you out. I've been talking with a Rural Development Program - subset of the USDA, and they've got a Loan Guarantee Program, that essentially acts as collateral for 80% of a loan. I went to them, and they started talking, well, say you needed 100,000... and I only need 15,000 all together, 3,000+ of which I already have, so the 12,000 left only needs about 10,000 to be collateralized. There are free consultants and nonprofit lender organizations that I'm also taking advantage of, if you're social justice minded and into grass roots systems like worker cooperatives and whatnot. It's something to think about. I can send people the info I've gathered over the last two years. Saves making all the same mistakes.

I hear my mom gripe about the HR thing a lot now. She works for a large manufacturing company whose headquarters is located at her plant but over the last months they keep doing stuff to computerize all the functions of HR. First they stopped handing out pay stubs and you have to go to one of like 3 computers to print your own stub if you want it. Then they put vacation requests on the computer (employees only have access to 3 computers and there are a lot of employees + 3 shifts a day). Then after a couple months they changed the vacation system and everyone whose request had not be approved prior to the change had to re-request their vacation. After that my mom wanted to call to make sure her vacation was in the system correctly and called several different times on several different days and NEVER got an answer in HR she always had to leave a message. She was NOT happy lol.

All of this make me weary because I will finally be finishing school in a month and I feel like my degree isn't going to be worth much in this economy. I only have a associate degree and I have no desire to continue college right now. It is taking a lot for me to get through the last class I need just to have a degree. I just hoping at least having a degree will help me get something better when I start looking for a better job. For now I am stuck in the land of Drycleaning counter girl.
