It took me 12 years, but I finally beat Final Fantasy VII.
Now, I know what you're thinking: "Big deal, handsome, lots of people have beaten that game." To me, it has been a grueling ordeal.
I got the game when it first came out. I played it non-stop for days, trying to find everything I could. When I got to the third disc, my Playstation stopped working. I had to wait until my birthday the next year to get another one. When I finally did I put the game in only to find that my memory card no longer worked. My save file and all those countless hours were gone forever.
Distressed, I decided to take a break from the game and try again later. While I was busy not playing FFVII, my brother was spending all of his free time with it. One day I walked into our bedroom to find him watching a cut-scene from the game I had not seen before.
"What's this part? It doesn't look familiar."
"Oh, this is the end."
I turned my head away from the television, but it was too late. With the ending I had just witnessed replaying constantly in my mind, I found it very difficult to start over and finish the game.
Final Fantasies VIII and IX came and went, and after I finished IX I decided to give VII another try. I got all the way to the end, just before the crater, just like last time. At our families' New Year's Eve party, one of my little cousins got Cheeto goo all over the third disc, rendering it useless. Neither rental place near us had a copy, and I refused to waste a birthday or christmas gift on a fresh copy.
I was done... Until they re-released it as a download on the Playstation work this year. See, I refused to spend any more quality gaming time on this game. I couldn't justify putting time aside to play through this game a third time. But now that it was on my PSP, I could hammer away at it at my leisure.
And that's exactly what I did. Every night, when my girlfriend and I would go to bed, she'd read, and I'd play. After a few nights of hearing me swear at the tiny hand-held device we shared the bed with, she put her head on my chest to see what the big deal was. After that night, I wasn't allowed to play without her, so she could see how it would end. (It was the same with every Zelda she's seen me play. She once withheld sex for a week because I beat a dungeon in Twilight Princess while she was at class.) It was weird seeing someone surprised when Aries died. I hadn't seen that shocked face since I was thirteen, going through it for the first time.
And so last night my twelve year journey came to an end. I'm glad it's done, but I'm more glad to know I never have to play through this game again.
When the credits started rolling, my girlfriend said, "This is seven, right? Meaning there are more of these? What's next?"
