"unofficial" talk of the legit ffxi windower mode.

Meh, I downloaded windower, tried it for a bit, and rapidly decided not to use it, since it facks with my video and I can't seem to resolve the problem. I can get the screen brightness up to roughly normal levels, but it leaves shadows/fog effects completely screwed regardless.

And I don't care if you use windower, just find it hypocritical, especially with the windowed mode excuse going away.
It'd be hypocritical to not like other people to use the windower. I don't care that others use the windower(Hell, I like it when they're using TP party so I don't have to spam my TP), but I do care if someone fleehacks or bots. Saying that it's hypocritical for me to not like actual hackers while I'm using a windower is stupid(and wrong), just like lumping a jaywalker with a murderer.

Ooh ooh I can fix it I can fix it! Pick me, pick me!

Actually, cheating is cheating, and murder is murder, and speeding is speeding. Cheating with windower plugins is the same as cheating with bots. Murdering with a handgun is the same as murdering with a knife. Speeding 10 miles over the limit is the same as speeding 15. Bots and windower are different types of cheating, but the crime is still the same. Are there different degrees of the same crime? Sometimes, but usually it doesn't matter. A cheater is a cheater, just like a murderer is a murderer, and a jaywalker is a jaywalker. Doesn't matter the technical details of the offense, but only that the offense was committed. There is no differentiation between methods of cheating. All cheaters are the same, and reside on the same level of the totem pole (that would be the bottom level, to be precise).

By that same logic, committing a murder is the same as speeding or jay walking; "there is no differentiation between methods of breaking the law." The people who argue that windower users are on the same level as flee hackers are generally people who profit from actual hacks and want justification or just to cut down on the persecution. No one cares that someone uses the windower, but people do care that someone flee hacks or voke bots; just like no one cares that you're speeding but people do care that you killed someone.

Plus, your logic has a huge gaping whole in the degree to which you break the law is significant. I can get arrested for going 24 or more over the speed limit, but not if I'm only going 23 over. I get a more severe sentence if I intentionally kill someone vs. if their death was an accident. So even if you lump all of the third-party things as cheats(they're not unless you use the retarded definition of cheating = third party), there's still degrees that you're just brushing aside as unimportant when in reality they are crucial to determining how to deal with the criminal.

Both logics are a bit nonsensical. Just because jaywalking is not as important of a crime as murder doesn't mean that they're a valid comparison to windower macros and voke bots. In the end there is only 2 sets of potential punishments in FFXI for breaking the rule... cheating and harrassment. There is no set structure of... "flee hack is less severe than POS hack," "windower is less severe than voke bot," merely all third party programs = warning then permaban.

You can use whatever programs you want, do whatever you feel is right in your own eyes but all the people who have continously said they don't consider it cheating because windowed mode should be included... it's time to either move over to the legit client or admit all along you were using it for the cheat programs.

I'm not in the camp that thinks all third party programs are cheating, fortunately. I'm pretty anal about lots of things, I admit, but not quite to that level. Basic Windower is fine. FRAPS is fine. That plugin for making the graphics look better (is it Draw Distance? - not the Ranger plugin), is fine with me. Anything that helps a person perform better than a PS2 user is cheating to me, to put it simply. TP Party was the bane of my Blm's existance when my static broke and I had to party with pickups - having to sit on MP because noone reports TP or that a SC is starting. So because of the hassle windower plugins caused me, I place them on the same level as all the other cheats. I don't even use a basic windower. I was tempted, because logging out to use the internet was becoming a hassle, but SE's news of a likely legit windower gave me motivation to hold out. I'm trying to avoid being labelled a hypocrite, and using any 3rd pt application is grounds for some. Being a PS2 user until just recently when I got a modern-age computer allowed me to hold the moral high ground on the cheating issue, and I'm loathe to give that up.

No, no, it really isn't. It really isn't at all. But you keep thinking that if it helps you sleep better at night.

having to sit on MP because noone reports TP or that a SC is starting.

Did you ask them to? Did you make any effort to let them know you wanted to MB their SC for more damage, and that they should let you know at least when they're starting it?

Were you proactive or did you just sit there going

<Pompidou> GRUMBLE GRUMBLE STUPID MELEE NOT GIVING ME INFO

Every time I've partied with melee who I knew used Windower & TParty I've done the silent SC once set up thing, but usually will announce 100% TP for the mages if they didn't have TParty. Some people are just douchebags. And if anyone had ever asked for TP reports I would've given them. Hence, why I ask - proactive or whiner?

I sleep just fine at night, for I'm guilt free. The people who use this logic to sleep better at night are the ones saying to themselves: "I cheat, but I'm ok, because I don't do X cheat. I only do Y." My conscience is clear and I sleep like a baby.

EDIT: Oops - forgot to reply to the second issue. I was passive. I never complain. I have no spine at work, I had no spine in school. I have no spine in XI. I take abuse and grumble about it in my head but it stops there. So no, I didn't complain to the melees, but I don't think it's my job to have to. Every person in a party has certain responsibilities after all.

by SE standards, all 3rd party programs are wrong. period.

sorry ladies and gents, but the world is VERY much black and white. you can pretend all you want to that there is a 'gray area' and that 'this' or 'that' is more or less acceptable than something else. arguing that using windower with out other cheats is more acceptable than using windower with other cheats is nothing more than a pathetic attempt at justification of something that is (by SE standards) wrong either way.

due my widescreen LCD (16:10) I like to use windower so I can choose a 4:3 resolution. (and doesn't spread out horizontally)
If I set FFXI on a 16:10 resolution it still looks goofy..
game wasn't made to run on widescreen lol.

EDIT: Read half the post and offered a fix, then read the other half and realized the fix was already tried. Anyhow, I thought the aspect ratio fix worked out in my case. I have a 1680/1050 monitor and everything looked fat till I noticed the option.

aspect ratio fix? hmmm tell me more
the only thing I tried is setting the resolution to 1680/1050 in the registery
but my char looked small and fat ;)

Am I the only one who really just likes the screenshot abilities of the current windower more than anything else? I guess with an official windower I could swap to that and use fraps or something, but I just like having that ability in addition to being able to tab out and the built in screenshot function of the game sucks.

ding ding, totally true :) i agree. plus the lighting on regular pol blows ass.

hmmm well, itll be interesting to see anyways.

oh, and btw, anyone who tries to compare windower to flee hacking/pos, botting, and etc, are the people who have directly benefitted, or hacked themself. point blank. go bitch about someone using PIP with ps2/xbox then too.. or about anyone with a pc and a ps2/xbox.

While in game, go to the config menu and under one of those sub menus, there's an option to change the aspect ratio no matter what resolution you are running.

I have windower set to run at 1600x900 (as well as FFXI, by using POLutils) and the aspect ratio to 16:9. That way it's almost full screen, but I can still see parts of my desktop and can easily minimize the game.

thanks!
i'll try that as soon as I get home :)
kinda lame all the LCD monitors are 16:10 and not 16:9 (or is that just in europe)

As said, it's been answered - by those who made the game - that a Thief merely needs to be in the same area as the monster killed. I don't believe that entirely, I'm pretty sure they have to be within range to normally get Experience Points. But they do not have to do anything outside of simply being in the party/alliance.

I doubt they have to be in range of the kill. If I am in a party, but I am outside the range to gain experience, I still have an effect on the experience gained. If I was 75 and a level 10 party member kills an EM, the level 10 recieves no experience since I am in party. So even if I am out of range, my effect on the experience and drops is already present (BS, KS, crystals). I don't see how TH would be any different since it's an active trait.
