I heard rumor that it was possible to download new maps for FFXI, maps that would label Zones, ???'s, and key quest/mission related areas.
Has anyone else heard of these upgraded .dat files, and if so, possibly know where to locate them?

Since maps are just textures, yes, it's 100% possible if you have one of those .dat editor programs to pull the texture out of the maps .dat file, and a program that can save images into the texture format FFXI uses.

But then again, you also get a handful of ingame map markers to use. Most cases the amount given is more than enough, unless you're marking every tiny little detail.

id be interested in replacement maps.. esp any that include such as "secret bits" and tunnel paths.

As much as I'd be interested in making Custom-made maps myself for
storyline purposes (I'd FRAPS it and voice-act a fan-made adventure), I
think that's what someone got busted for once in-game.

That, and the /salute Warp-Jump-50-Feet-Ahead-And-Run-In-Mid-Air hack.

The only thing I could see this helping with is:

1. Avoiding aggro. I say that because let's say a monster starts chasing
you. The server, like most MMORPG servers, is essentially running an
instance of FFXI itself, just like you are. Except they have authority over
what they can do. With that in mind, they have the same normal map set
as you. But if you load a different map on your PC, one that they don't
have, then you run down a tunnel that's not on their map, the monster'll
get confused and de-aggro.

2. Reaching Coffers, Chests, and Target Points just out of reach. While
that might be useful (yet useless in Dynamis), I kinda feel that defeats the
whole purpose of adventuring in the first place.

3. Reaching new zones. Ever since I beat CoP, I was wondering how to
zone into that "Obelisk" area that's supposedly on the North end of Al'Taieu.
I think it's a bit impossible to reach on account of the "Red Holographic
Walls & Force Fields" blocking you A-La "Star Trek" or something. But
who knows, eh?

I'm more interested in custom map BUILDING than editing. I have a City
in mind I'd like to build, lol.

Apollyon[/url]]This is v1_0 of the Vana'diel Cartography Project.

Directions: Extract to your FFXI folder. The map .DAT files will automatically be placed into the proper ROM folder.

To Uninstall: Follow the install directions with the uninstall .zip

Version 1.1
- Fixed incorrect map: Lower Yughott Grotto incorrectly displayed Ghelsba Outpost
Version 1.0
- All maps current prior to July '05 update

Special Thanks
- Delphyhne for the Java program to inject .BMP files.
- FFXI Windower forums for the info I needed to complete this project
- ffxi-atlas.com for all of the maps (I only made a few minor changes to some, but most maps are straight from FFXI-atlas.com)

Download (Scanned before I posted, but by all means, please scan again)
FFXI VCP v1.1 (.zip 31,243 KB)
FFXI VCP Uninstall (.zip 42,293 KB)

Obviously please let me know if you find any errors, such as wrong maps displaying, etc.

I suggest you download the uninstaller too, because if you ever want to, and can't find it later on when you need it, then.. yeah =P

Don't listen to Daveman. He is a stinking liar . . .

. . . his signature says he is an 83 blm! And that's just not possible!

Nice try, Dave, next time, make your lies something that is possible in the game. :P

I may not be a lvl83 blm, but I'm just as good as one!

wewt. perfect. installing. done. kthanxbai

hmm does this let me access maps i dont have yet?

nope it doesn't, it uses the ingame map system so you need to have the maps.

FFassist has a map overlay that does that for zones even without maps, here's a screenshot of what it looks like.

I think you can download maps for ffassist that are the ones from ffxi-atlas.com

yea im not much into 3rdparty. but as you can tell from my .dat files posts i have no qualms about screwing things around a bit.

Does this map thing only work with Windower? Cause I can't get my Windower to work ; ;

The maps I posted yes, ffassist not 100% sure that windower is needed, but I think you do.

Could someone post a link of where to find FFassist for some of the not so computer savy people please. ^^

FFAssist Version 20r3. I believe this is still the most current, haven't checked recently. You might need MSVCR70.dll if you get an error message when starting it. It has a readme, however learning how to set it up will still prove difficult if you are not computer savy.

He means MAPS. You know. (A-1)-(O-15)? Not areas. :P

I just want the maps to be like in WoW.. where we could have it open and it'd keep our position relative to the map and let us keep map up and still move.
