I dunno fire - people expect far less of mages due to the lack of availability as well as necessity for most parties. IE: Do you care if the rdm can't stick slow? Yeah - but is he refreshing the pld? Yeah... ok well there are no other rdm 60-62 on the whole damn server who are not /anon so I guess we either xp with a shitty rdm or we don't.

I mean really - I invite a blm or rdm to a pt and what do I usually get? Full AF, some int+ rings, maybe a morion tathlum or a darkstaff if I'm lucky. Usually the rdm goes through with a sword the whole time.

I invite a melee 60+ and I expect to see at least snipers, up to date weapon (usually 200-600k) a couple of other acc or str pieces at the very least. Usually if the melee doesn't show up in haub or SH etc; I start to worry about their dedication.
I like to show up to a party/camp wearing my Vermy cloak, just because it's unusual and it might help people remember me and my damage. I whip out my SH before we start fighting though, just so I don't get booted for being an idiot.

lmfao, nice XD

well at least you spent 7m on your body :-P

If you are simply autoattacking than you can swap macros for effectiveness all you want because you've got nothing else of relevence to do.

If you are a mage than none of your attacks, heals, songs, buffs, ext to be operating manually. As you gain levels this quickly starts to flood your macros. As you gain levels as well this makes your job increasingly complicated and requires an increasing amount of attention to do effectively. I can swap just as many macros as you, the problem is that changing between macro pallettes takes time and concentration, time that as a job who is always doing something I do not have always. Just to basic function as a mage or bard type I'm required to constantly be pressing macros or else all I do is stand around.

Well I would argue from a melee standpoint that yes, while autoattack takes no effort, you still have to pay attention.

It's not like blm is mega-hard. What must you do, debuff mob so you can dmg it more, back up cure, back up stat-down/para/silence/etc removal?

It's just like everything else - in order to be good you had to do testing to find out what works for you, then arrange the most effective macro setup to accompany your well thought out process, then apply the process to xp.

Much of melee is hate management. As much as a mage manages mp you still have to manage your own hate relative to the particular tanketc - this means keeping a gauge of mob hate on more of a 'feel' level, and altering your process to compensate. This also means leveling several subjobs to maintain effectiveness in any situation, as well as capping out the skills and weapons which accompany those sj's, and using different processes per SJ.

You did say you lvld thf to 48, but thf generally don't have to worry about their own hate value and other such things due to the fact that they dont generate much of it.

The point Skaw was trying to make is that he views MNK as complicated because of his 2 pages worth of gear swap. The point I was trying to make is besides the fact that I already have lots of clutter I have to pay attention to in terms of actual spells I cast, mages could trump a melee 10 fold easily in terms of gear swap possibilities.

That's quite possibly because mages are the favored sons of ffxi, no doubt about that D:

The difference is I use all my equipment swapping on a regular basis in an EXP PT while a Mage isn't going to use all 6 IV and III GA spells. I didn't think you could be that dense. At most you'll use two of each, plus a MP Restore Macro and a basic equipment setup one. Given a RDM, chances are your only Debuff will be Bio, and the occasional stun. The only macro I do not use is ONE of my TWO weaponskill macros. And even then, I could use both given my TP and partners TP.

You know what's so funny about this thread?

Vang inspires more interest than a thread about George Bush. Seriously, check the view counts... this has almost double the views...

I don't know if that's funny or sad :(

The following macros I'll use in an average XP PT...
Around 2 or 3 level 3 macros.(Oh so nice for free 500ish dmg hits when 4s draw too much hate).
Around 3 or 4 level 4 macros.
Potentially 2 Ga macros(for different chains-though rare lately) .
Bio
Stun2 elemental debuffs.
Rest Macro.
Drain.
Aspir.
Cure 3.

Considering that fills up 2 palletes nicely...

The following gear swaps I do manually with control E.
elemental, dark or ugallepih pendant.

The following gear swaps I could do if I wanted to add a third pallete just for gear swaps...

>Remove all staves from my regular nuke macros, seeing as what I want is situational.

Swap in different staves.(8 macros there)

Swap in MP.

Swap in Int.

Swap in Magic Attack Bonus.

Swap in Elemental magic.

Swap in -Enmity.

Swap in the torques by macro.

Swap in refresh.

The problem with that... is I literally could not keep up with the twiddle movement I'd require to do all those swaps on the third pallete and still use the first 2 palletes affectively.

I play monk too, and I have to say, it CAN be played such that you run to the bathroom every other fight. Or it can be played better. Monk has to worry about pulling hate a lot, especially off of a ninja tank (at least through the 50's; I understand nin gets better enmity gear later).

Setting up macros is a bit of a process, sure, but they're easy to manage in battle. It's annoying to carry an extra 6-8 slots worth of gear just for a good chi blast, but certainly manageable. Same deal with making judgement calls with regard to accuracy vs strength gear and stuff.

Is it the easiest job to play in FFXI? Maybe. That definitely doesn't mean that monks are poor players or don't contribute.

I do my homework, farm for my scorpion harness, and show up ready to play hard and party for a long time. I play my job abilities selectively to help manage hate. I know the SATA formation and when to voke for Utsusemi; after all, I can swap in my counter gear, hit Cstance, and chakra if things look bad. Of course, using Chakra is a judgment call, because with a cyclas, that's 200+ hp restored, and that can pull the mob right back.

And I play the job because it's fun.

The most annoying thing about monk is the politics of it.

QCDN will go through phases where everyone lauds the DoT of monk, but then there are phases like right now, where someone like Skaw shows up to really defend the job, and people get polarized about it and start thinking of monks as assholes who are out to show them up -- no offense, Skaw, but people are out to take shots at monk these days. Part of this is the constant tension between the melee DD classes, since no single job of them is necessary to a party's well-being.

But I love this job. I did my 13th and 14th charity runs of mission 5-1 yesterday; I love organizing events and going in swinging, and I love that while my job might not be perfect for much outside of 5-1, I can play it for just about any mission, look forward to chi blasting gods like a cannon, and farm and solo anything up to DC without using a two hour or sleep attacks . . . maybe not as safe as sleep, bind, nuke, but faster and more satisfying. I took the job on because I love the idea of hand-fighting in a medieval/pre-industrial setting, and I like the idea of a character who is a bit of a man apart. I'm glad that it's a job that continues to be effective, if not always godly, at anything I want to do.

And yes, our DoT in parties is pretty good. Sorry about the distortion thing, but we didn't band together and decide not to learn those moves til the 60's; that's the way monk is gimp. We can still beat the crap out of robber crabs, and if you help me get to the high 60's, I will destroy the evils before me for any quest or mission.

So quit bashing my job and the people who play it, and I'll see you guys in the game.

i keep myself entertained in my parties by stunning whirl of rage, other than that i'm usually pretty bored in xp.

i leveled rng to get into cannons and blow shit away with 4 other rng, se took that from me.

now i look for opportunities to cannon. xp'n sucks, 9k an hour is fun.

Meeze, RNG PTs are not broken.. i have personally tried it post nerf to see for myself. Grab a NIN, BRD, RDM, RNG, RNG, RNG and go hit up sky.

Pop a Bison steak, get double minuet and your good to go.

Just save a tad more TP nothing special and rock that slug shot, 1200+ easy. NIN tanks until the RNGs have TP then you all just fire off your weaponskills = dead mob and no downtime

It seems you have given up too early and not tried a config adjustment (ie, drop one RNG, pick up a NIN). Oh, yeh if you want extra damage, get a good NIN, one geared to DD. NIN themselves can hit up 1000+ Jins with the right gear.

but you won't get 12-15k exp/hr D:

I never did take numbers, but with a bard pulling i wouldn't doubt it. A DD Ninja near makes up for the loss in one RNG and can tank so the RNG's can fight from a distance so as not to nerf their dmg output.

It really is just as good as before, just need to co-ordiante WS's better to kill the mob. ..and have a competent party of course.

Let me ask though why the ninja? Why not pick up a 4th war and whoever has hate can tank long enough until the next person WS right?

Im with you guys. >.>
I really wish Elemmire would be quiet until
we actually kill it. I dont doubt we will though.

And as for the tiamat @ ??% post, i dont think it's
hard to understand we are happy when we see that
our efforts are improving and we are going the right
way, allow us our little cries of joy. ;)

(There was really only one of those post, the other number
of our improvement came from a flame that should never
had been done and quite frankly is an embarresement,
atleast to me.)

Oh snap, 2 windows of qcdn open, wrong thread. >.>
So... Yeah, anyways, hows the weather over there?

Why would a Ranger Eat Bison Steak?

Flounder Meuniere is so much better...
