Vanguard

Definitely should have held off on the release as there are some major bugs to be worked out, but all and all a great game I think. Vanguard will be at the top of the MMO charts once all the kinks are worked out.
Fact.

SOE pushed the release because Sigil was running out of money, but I can live with the bugs for now.

Patch this morning. Hoping they fixed the corpse, guildinvite and stuck bugs this time around.

VERY taxing system reqs..... i have a good machine, and i lagged way too much on high performance setting (which made the game look like crap.)

Critted for over 2k today o.ob

Hey Anaeran I'm downloading updates right now, Might join you on Thunderaxe and hit you up ingame, Making a ranger I think.

Btw What other servers are people here on?

Think a couple QCDNers play on the Euro PVP servers. Other than that, I think we're the only ones who are playing VG from Quetz atm.

If anyone is interested in this game and wants to know more you can check out my mini-review of it in the locked WoW vs FFXI thread. I probably should have just posted that here. Oh well.

After the way SOE handeled Star Wars Galaxy and The Matrix, I can't believe anyone would actually get involved in any of their newer MMORPG's... Hope you guys don't put to much stock into this game, you'll be severly let down come a year or so when they... "Well Bob, lets change the gameplay and get rid of the current crafting system. Let's also up the subscription fee and give them nothing for it. Tell them, uh, hmm, err, there is a new internet tax on games, yeah."

SOE only handles the servers and marketing, nothing more.

Yeah, exactly. Sigil is the driving force behind this operation, and they are formerly affiliated with SoE. SoE is, as Tidy said, handling marketing and such. The guys calling the shots as far as content goes are 2 geniuses that brought you EQ1 and much of 2. You won't be disappointed w/this game.

Putting this here, cleaned up a bit. I will update this as I progress through Vanguard: Saga of Heroes.

Pros:
- Challenging content for various situations (solo, group, raid etc)

- Adventuring (basic exping/content), Diplomacy and Crafting: all 3 of the major spheres of the game are both entertaining and addicting as you can improve your character in a number of ways.

- Well paced character progression: you don't become level 50 over night

- Amazing graphics/world flow that makes simply roaming the world an incredible gaming experience

- Hardcore Bannings of RMT. If you report someone selling gold the GMs in this game will ban them on the spot. There is no "we're looking into it..." bullshit, you get results here. Also, the GMs don't all have sticks up their asses. Joke around with them as they help you with your issues, they seem to enjoy their jobs here.

-Fun, strategic combat system that promotes smart gameplay over mindless button smashing. If you suck, you don't progress.

- You can't delevel, but rather you accumulate "exp debt" which requires you to earn back that lost exp before you're able to progress to the next level. Kind of a nifty new take on it imo, since you can easily dig yourself a pretty big hole if you're not careful.

- The line between strong players and weak players is once again well defined in an MMO. Weak players won't reach the hardest areas in this game, as they've been able to in both FF and WoW.

The EQ dev team once again is not shy about holding the "casual" player back behind their more dedicated gamers when it comes to content progression. While some may argue this isn't fair to the casual gamers, think about end game in both FFXI and WoW and I'm sure it isn't hard to see why this is listed as a PRO rather than a CON in online gaming.

- Planning ahead: The Devs (2 guys from EQ1 and 2 teams) have recognized the importance of looking to the future when designing MMO content and thus have already planned out their next 7 expansions. This ensures no gigantic content mishaps (from what I hear, WoW expansions have been notorious for this) that negate all your previous efforts. It will also ensure the game is running for many, many years to come.

Cons:

- Launch bugs (expected with the launch of any brand new MMO). Good news is the devs of this game are extremely vigilant in making the game absolutely flawless and are quickly working to counter these minor issues.

- If you don't have a quality machine to run it on you won't be able to fully appreciate the splendor of the world environments. I bought a new computer simply to play this game on its highest quality settings and I have to admit, there's nothing out there that compares. I was blown away when I finally cranked it up to HQ graphics.

- Some features, such as the /raid command, aren't in the game yet (though will be relatively soon). This makes big guild events kind of tough to manage at this stage, however, early on most guilds won't be needing the raid function anyways, so its not really a big deal.

- You will be hooked. This game is phenominal and as such will likely suck you in before you even realize it. Don't let work, family and friends suffer as a result of....yeah you know how it goes

Other than that, I'd easily say this game will replace WoW as top dog in MMO gaming. It would be cool to see some of the more serious gamers here pick this up and try it out.

I seen the trailers. Do the graphics really suck that bad in game?

See above.

I really really really wanted to like this game but unfortunately i think it's going to fall in the same crack as DDO did for me:

'I'll give em a year or so to work it out and check back.'

All the research i've done on this leads me to believe it's basicly the same experience i get on WoW with some more bells, whistles, and better graphics. I had a big problem with the podcast i linked in the post above as it made my jaw drop and i wanted to go run out and buy it. Past that a little digging for gameplay footage made me realize that might have been a bit of a foolhardy thing to go about doing.

Just my thoughts on it, not trying to rain on anyone's parade. There's alot this game sounds like it does incredibly right but not enough to make me bounce from a well-founded game so soon after it's release.

i bought this game the day before release, and to me I thought it was released but I had to wait a day to actually play it. Any ways my first impression is this, if you think your computer is "the shit" take a closer look. You are going to need at least 2 gigs of RAM, then look at your graphics card. Is it anything less than an Nvidia 7000 or an ATI equivilant? Go cry if it's not. This game is a computer hog. I thought I could possibly play on my acer ferrari lap top since I'm at college. While I could still play, I had to play it on minimal graphics settings. The game is mediocre at best on these settings. Almost actually like EQ graphics.

Now for the game play. The game mechanics are wonderful. I created a bard, and the fact that you make your own songs makes this game a for sure winner. It's things like that, that prove the devs. know what they're doing.

Combat is decent, but then again I only went to level 12 or so on my bard. What I really like about FFXI is the whole skill chain idea. That is what really appeals to me about MMO's. Vanguard is more of a WoW, do your damage and keep the melee alive and whatever else you do is fine type game.

I have to say the game is going to be one of the best out there, but give it a year for people to start getting new computers, and to have the game polished. I'd say the game was release at least a year too early. It didn't have that finnishing touch to it yet. WoW played better in open beta than vanguard played on release.

I do have to say that the GM's in this game rock. They are human and you can actually talk with them.

So def. give this game a try if you have a good computer, and I mean a damn good computer, because otherwise you may just wanna go play everquest if you are playing on minimal graphics settings.

Remade to play on Targonor with some old school, hardcore EQ1 buddies of mine from Veeshan.

If anyone's just starting and needs some help I'm available on Targonor now still playing under the character name "Anaeran".

Update:

A lot of players have left because of unfinished content, but the new SoE buyout is rumored to be taking place soon, which will give them money and larger coding teams to work with. Hopefully they keep sigil employees onboard for creative purposes.

Content is finally being added and they're accepting applications to have elite guilds test raid content on the test server. My guild is applying to take part in this so I'll let anyone who's still interested know how it goes.

Now's the time to give VG another chance people ;)

I only left because all my friends quit. I have a level 27 Bard just waiting around until my eventual return.
