I'm pissed and have been for a while, but I just realized why.

I remember when they used to be difficult.

I can beat just about any game you put in front of me in 8 hours. That sucks. When it is longer than 8 hours, it's because of "extra content" they add that is nothing short of ultra repeatitive, mind numbing, masochism.

I remember when there was no "Easy Mode" for pussies.

There was a game. You selected hom many players and you pushed start. You got as far as your skill allowed you to get. Instead of making easy/normal/hard modes, why don't they just adjust the difficulty of the game as you play through it?

I remember when sequals were completely different from the last game.
Grand theft auto. Grand Theft Auto: Vice city. Grand theft Auto: Sanzzzzzz zzzzz zzzzz

Wolfenstien. Doom. Marathon. Descent. Duke Nukem 3D. Quake. Goldeneye. Turok zzzzzzzzzzz

Sports gamezzzzzzzz zzzzzz zzzzzz

I remember when they still had original ideas. Now everything is just a clone of whatever was popular last week.

I remember when less than half of all new games were not FPS.

These are seriously starting to piss me off, and it's not because I can't play them. It's because I learned ho to play them all in 1999. There have been little to no changes in controls. It's always the same story. Lets go kill all the bad guys with a... pistol? Then you find an Uzi. Then a shotgun. Then a chain gun. Then a grenade launcher. Then a rocket launcher. You also have a knife you never use.

I remember when there were no strategy guides and if you couldn't figure it out, you stopped playing.

It made beating adventure games fun and left you with a feeling of acclompishment. Last week my 12 year old cousin was talking smack to me because I still have yet to finish twilight princess. Then he told me I could use his guide if I was stuck. Then I explained how fuck all lame that was. He doesn't understand.

I remember when I could play a game for 6 months before I beat it instead of 6 hours.

I beat Windwaker in 1 day. I beat Halo in 1 day. I beat Rayman in 1 day. I beat Gears of War in 1 day. If you are going to spend millions making games, give em a little bit of replay value for gods sake.

I remember when there were hundreds of game I wanted to play instead of 5.

Guitar Hero. Final Fantasy, but not so much anymore. Portal (fresh take on an old genre, good show). Spore. Ok, so 4 games I would like to play.

I wish i was a noob again so video games were still fun.

Play the FPSs online, its why you are able to beat them in one day, is because they are made for online.

Also, try not to look at genres as a whole and look at individual games.

For example, its plain as day to see how CoD4 has progressed since the original CoD, same thing with H3 vs. H1.

Or maybe you even need to go out and try a game that you think is really shitty and just see how it is.

Examples: Project Sylpheed, Ninjabread Man or others.

Although i do agree with the Sports gamezzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

Battletoads & Double Dragon on snes, so fucken hard for some reason.

But OMG look at teh awesome graphiczzzzzzzzzz...

I'll take Mario 3, Earthbound, and Legend of Zelda over any of these new-age games any day of the week.

As much as I loved the game... Beating Legend of Zelda, going to the new missions where the dungeons moved around, you got weapons and items in different orders and for some stupid reason they changed bomb walls into RANDOMLY RUB UP AGAINST A WALL FOR 10 SECONDS AND YOULL JUST MAGICALLY WALK THROUGH IT was kinda killed it for me. Not that I didnt still beat that too. Still. thats 10 times the amount of playabilty of any offline game that has come out since then.

Exactly what makelith said. I agree that games have really gone down in difficulty, and some games on the hardest difficulty are still east *cough mass effect on insanity*.

Games like halo, gears (fail), cod4, etc. Are made for the online multiplayer, not single. Beating legendary on the first day isnt all that fun. Cod4...Im still on the third mission, single player is gayer than aids, its for multiplayer.

I still play old nintendo games every now and then, just because I miss how difficult they were. And there are alot of rpgs on the playstation I can play over and over.

Except DDR, MGS ( I got the tux and didnt know about it first o.O) and guitar hero of course...
and maybe spore...
if its ever released...

Before there were hack devices and beating some super hard game that required calluses on your thumbs, the patience of a saint, and insanely tuned reflexes to make up for the incredibly poor response of the controllers!

And you had to walk uphill both ways through in blizzards with snow 20 feet high and fight off rabid wolves to rent it in the first place.

kids these days.

Donno, I'm still having a hard time getting S ranks in the new age sonic games (lolSonic360), Mario Galaxy has it's harder moments, but like stated, I've had alot harder times in the 64/NES days..

For some reason Kid Chameleon is ringing bells, I should go find that game again.

Same could be said about movies. You get all these effects, and explosions, but none of them have near the story of movies 10-20 years ago. Come down to simple fact there is only so much you can do. Would the game be any fun if you started out with a BFG? Games just cost to much to make. They spend more time on the cg effects then they do on the actual games length and difficulty. The original Halo was made for solo play and was alot better thought out. Halo 2-3 are just like movies sequels, never as good as the original and are there to milk the cow as much as possible.

I'd say the reason for the shift in difficulty is to expand the market. Now, you no longer have to have no life aside from video games to be able to beat them, you no longer have to dedicate hours to perfecting moves or strategies to progress. There are plenty of people out there who mainly want the story and don't care about "the challenge" of progressing, so why do you think that the video game industry is allowing those people to enjoy the games too?

The whole reason why they still have harder difficulties are for those who want a challenge. If you're one of the people that have to play something on the hardest difficulty, that you have to do only the most impossible things to have fun, then maybe video games aren't for you anymore.

Also, most of the games of yesteryear weren't really that hard, they were just unforgiving. If you fucked up, you died; the health restoring items weren't as plentiful, or you didn't have as many cool moves/powers to avoid taking damage in the first place. Or the games were just ports/expansions on games that were originally in the arcade and were therefore designed to make you eat up quarters. Also, they were often more "challenging" because they were more limited in what they could do. With all of the advancements in technology, the games expanded to the point where a lot of the "difficulties" aren't issues anymore.

I'll grant that a lot of games are copies of other games, but that's because video games are far older than when you were a kid. Of course it's easy to be original when the entire genre is only 2 years old. By now, almost all of the best mechanics have been fleshed out, everyone is working on story or graphics since there's not much more they could add to gameplay; although bitching about no revolutionary changes in the gameplay between sequels is just ridiculously stupid. Same with movies, when there are thousands of plots that have been done before, it's almost impossible to create something that is completely unique. The only option is to make games with obvious influences from other games or to stop making games all together.

I'd say that the evolution of games is a good thing. Now, you don't need lightning fast reflexes or hours of practice to be able to stand a chance; it's grown much more casual, more fun. Rather than only have a handful of people I could play games against, now I can play against almost anyone I know and we both have fun. I usually win, since I play a lot more and have more skill, but even the non-gamers can have play and have fun. Smash Brothers is a perfect example, it's an incredibly simple fighter, no complex move sets, no massive amounts of information you have to keep track of, but it's fun. The best games are very easy to pick up and play, but take a long time to master; smash brothers is one of those games. But then, most people aren't interested in mastering the games, they just want to play them for fun.

If you don't think recent games are challenging, you've never seen Ikaruga. That shit is nuts.

off topic: Sonic 360 fucking sucks. They failed hardcore on that game. To be honest there hasn't been a really good console Sonic game since SA2/SA2:B

The Wii one (Sonic & The Secret Rings) is a great game but it isn't the same play style, so I don't really consider it the same (Same thing with Sonic Riders etc)

Ikaruga is easily one of my favorite recent games, and rather replayable despite the fact that it's rather short.

Trauma Center is another good example, a challenging yet fair game with a relatively unique premise and gameplay. Good times.

I don't still have it, but I recently read an article where someone made connections between the arcade scene and home consoles. The idea being that in an arcade, you spend your quarters, but if the game sucked, you stop playing it and move on to something else. Therefore games had to be accessable, entertaining, and keep you interested in playing. Many early console games were either straight up ports of these arcade games, or influenced heavily by the style.

That sort of thing is starting to fade away though, and we're being left with... well, the same things you're talking about.

Incidentally, most of the games I still care about have been arcade ports, or really close to the style. (Ikaruga, Bemani series & Guitar Hero, Gundam vs and battle series off the top of my head)

I really think Baj said it best. Video Games are not new and its hard to create something new all together. I think this generation does focus on story and graphics the most compared to everything eles and it is hard to think of something unique and individual to itself.

The thing I wonder is if there are any more possible genres to be created. I heard Resident Evil marked the creation of Survival Horror and that's one of my favourite genres.

Battletoads for NES, literally took me years to finally beat it. The ending was just a screen of text basically saying "Congratulations". My theory is that the programmers didn't expect anyone to actually beat it. I sure proved them wrong!

I think every game should have 2 options. Equivalent to the Hard and God mod of God of War =P

Speaking of side scrolling shoot em ups Raiden pisses me off on the flashed base Raidens. You can't just hold down the shoot button it sucks and pisses me off because my shoot finger gets tired.
