Virtual Console: Wii-kly Update

Pop quiz: What do you get when you add together 10 pins, 18 holes, two stolen jewels and hundreds of tumbling blocks? Never mind arithmetic—the answer lies in this week’s excellent additions to the Wii Shop Channel™. Wii™ lovers on the lookout for fresh gaming thrills can take their pick from a lively lineup that includes electrified bowling, Mario-styled golf, inventive puzzles and fantastic battles. Better yet, try out all four games and watch the fun grow exponentially.

Nintendo adds new and classic games to the Wii Shop Channel at 9 a.m. Pacific time every Monday. Wii owners with a high-speed Internet connection can redeem Wii Points™ to download the games. Wii Points can be purchased in the Wii Shop Channel or at retail outlets. This week’s new games are:

WiiWare™

Midnight Bowling™ (Gameloft, 1-4 players, Rated E for Everyone, 800 Wii Points): Plunge directly into the trendy and electric atmosphere of Midnight Bowling. With awesome playing sensations, prepare for ultra-fun gaming thanks to a new physics engine that lets you control your throws precisely and easily with your Wii Remote™ controller and make spectacular spins that will impress your opponents. Face up to three friends in the fun party mode, where your playing abilities will be put to the test. Whatever your experience level, launch yourself into the immersive career mode, where you will play in the trendiest bowling spots on the planet against charismatic characters that will give you a run for your money.

MadStone (Riverman Media, 1-2 players, Rated E for Everyone, 800 Wii Points): Time is short. Earth trembles as the forces of nature stir and grow restless. Can you turn the tide? In this dynamic puzzle game, you must clear the path for your elemental MadStones to reach the bottom of the screen. Blocks can be broken by striking them directly or by the force of falling objects. The novice tries frantically to break enough blocks, while the master sets up cascading collapses with only a handful of direct strikes. As two sides struggle for domination, titanic forces build, only to be unleashed in an earth-shaking final confrontation. Experience the mystical single-player journey, or challenge a friend in competitive two-player mode.

Virtual Console™

Mario Golf™ (Nintendo 64™, 1-4 players, Rated E for Everyone, 1,000 Wii Points): Mario™ takes a well-deserved break from his role as the Mushroom Kingdom’s busiest hero and returns to the links for some world-class golfing action. Since no one likes to hit the fairways alone, he’s brought along a group of friends—both familiar characters and brand new ones. Choose from 10 different modes of play and six 18-hole courses in a variety of environments for a golfing experience with endless replay value. Add in fun, colorful graphics with a Mario touch (a Boo indicates wind direction), intuitive controls, incredibly deep game play and multiplayer support (taunt your opponents), and you have a game anyone will enjoy—even if you’ve never played a round of golf. Fore!

Shining Force™ II (Sega Genesis, 1 player, Rated E for Everyone—Mild Fantasy Violence, 800 Wii Points): It’s a dark and stormy night in the kingdom of Granseal when a thief steals two jewels from the Tower of the Ancients. He sets in motion strange events that lead to the resurrection of Zeon, the Devil King. Granseal’s king falls sick, the princess is kidnapped, and a door to Arc Valley, the Devil King’s home, is opened. The young swordsman, Bowie, realizing the grave danger Granseal faces, must lead the Shining Force to find the Holy Sword and the stolen jewels, and protect Granseal against the invading armies of Zeon.

Woo, Shining Force II and Mario Golf

I have a feeling they're really trying to upsell MadStone as more exciting than it is. Do not want.

FINALLY!!!!! Shining Force 2! How i've waited for you. Time to completely dominate that game again.

I need to blow some more money on VC games.

DING*DING*DING*DING*DING* We have a winner! Secret of Mana lands today.

WiiWare

World of Goo - 1,500 Points
World of Goo is an award-winning, physics-based puzzle/construction game made entirely by two guys. Grab living, squirming, talking globs of goo to build structures, bridges, cannonballs, zeppelins and giant tongues. The millions of Goo Balls that live in the beautiful World of Goo are curious to explore—but they don't know that they are in a game, or that they are extremely delicious. World of Goo Corporation is contractually obligated to state that everyone is a winner, and is enthusiastic to celebrate everyone's Goo building opportunities equally.

Art Style: CUBELLO - 600 Points
Art Style: CUBELLO mixes the strategy and feel of a traditional puzzle game with the precision and reflexes required in a shooter. As each stage begins, various colored cubes form into one large object called a Cubello, which floats and rotates as you play. Launch additional cubes from your magazine and try to connect four or more of the same color, removing them from the Cubello and eventually leaving only its core. Take on the challenge of either Stage or Endless mode and watch what happens when Bonus Time is activated. The straightforward controls and goal ensure that anyone can play, while offering enough depth that even advanced players will find themselves quickly addicted to the unique world of Art Style: CUBELLO.

Street Fighter II: Special Champion Edition - Sega Genesis - 800 Points
STREET FIGHTER II': SPECIAL CHAMPION EDITION was the first STREET FIGHTER game released for the Sega Genesis console. The STREET FIGHTER series can be considered one of the first fighting games to popularize competitive video game fighting. This version of the game contains both the CHAMPION and HYPER rule sets, from the two editions released in the arcades. It also introduced an exclusive Group Battle mode that is now a general feature in most fighting games. Play as one of 12 different characters, each with their own distinctive fighting style. Try single-player mode or challenge a friend in this legendary, classic fighting game.

Woot, Shining Force 2 last week and Secret of Mana this week, yay good VC releases.

I just happened to check this for the first time in like... 2 months. And I see two of my lifetime favorite games in SF2 and SoM... Nice. Fucking Nice.

I think only FF4, FF6, and FFTactics are higher on my list then SF2 and SoM.

Ah, grand times with Secret of Mana, heading off to get Gnome, I played the shit out of this back in the day and I intend to now.

I have 100 Points atm, so I'm thinking of buying 2000 and purchasing World of Goo and Art Style: CUBELLO.

Got secret of mana last night(WHY THE FUCK WASN'T I TOLD IT WAS OUT?!?), unfortunately, I was NOT kidnapped by the goblins at the beginning of the game. I hate it when that happens.

OH SHIT, Shining Force 2 and Secret of Mana, I haven't turned on my Wii in nearly 3 months, now I can finally buy some VC titles!

Almost a letdown after the recent releases, but solid enough.

WiiWare

Tetris Party - 1,200 Points

The Incredible Maze - 500 Points

Entering the maze could not be easier, but finding your way out will require a keen eye and a steady hand. Obstacles and traps are around every corner, so move your ball around the maze without falling off the edge. But watch out, there are lots of surprises in store. GRADIUS® II GOFER NO YABOU - TurboGrafx16 CD-ROM - 900 Points
This shooter is the sequel to the seminal masterpiece, GRADIUS. Two years after its last epic battle, the GRADIUS army recommissions the VIC VIPER super-dimensional warplane to combat the invasion of a new nemesis known as GOFER. Piloting the latest model of the VIC VIPER, players can select between multiple WEAPON MODULES and SHIELDS to tackle the varying stages and enemy attack patterns they come up against. With a total of nine stages, this perfect port of the original boasts one of the longest adventures in the series and features more of its trademark fast-paced background music to accompany the intense action.

Art Style: CUBELLO and World of Goo are pretty fun.
The Amazing Maze sounds like this wooden toy thing I used to have as a kid. I loved that thing, so if I have the points to spare I'm probably gonna download it.

I have no complaints about Gradius II being released, that's a classic almost on the level of SoM and Mario RPG as far as I'm concerned. Too bad SHMUPs have never been a mainstream genre.

Game play videos make it look like a super intense version of bridge builder. I loved Bridge Builder so hopefully it stacks up. I'll be able to download it hopefully friday unless i see a really bad review.

From what I've played, it's really fun (I'm towards the end of Ch. 3). It's less a bridge building game and more a physics simulator, although there are points in the game where you have to build bridges, and some stages give you a small sense of pride when you figure out what you have to do. I strongly recommend it for anyone who owns a Wii.

Sweet. Earthworm Jim.

Strong Bad Episode 3: Baddest of the Bands - 1,000 Points
Rock and roll! Hurting for cash, Strong Bad sets out to dominate the “Battle Royale of the Bands.” Can he rule the stage and win the big prize? Or will he be drowned out by the competition? Find out in this high-voltage episode.

Art Style: ROTOHEX - 600 Points
Use colored triangular panels to create a vibrant mosaic of stained glass in Art Style: ROTOHEX. As triangles fall from the top of the screen, rotate them to group six panels of the same color and create a matching hexagon, or HEX. Once the HEX has been formed, it will disappear, allowing the existing panels to shift and more panels to fill the playing field. A clear-cut goal and two different styles of intuitive controls allow you to focus solely on the game play-which is vital, as the playing field will be full of panels before you know it. With multiple modes (unlock more as you progress further in SOLO mode), special item panels at your disposal, and the ability to play cooperatively or competitively with a friend, there will always be another HEX to create.

Earthworm Jim - Sega Genesis - 800 Points
Jim was an ordinary earthworm who did very earthworm-like things, such as flee from crows and eat dirt. One day, during an outer space fight, a suit drops to Earth and falls around Jim. It mutates him into a large and intelligent (at least by earthworm standards) superhero. Play as Jim in this Sega Genesis classic. When Jim learns of the evil plans of Psy-Crow and Queen Slug-for-a-Butt, he decides to rescue Princess What's-Her-Name. Run, gun, swing on hooks by your head and launch cows at the interesting characters you meet along the way, such as Major Mucus, Chuck and Fifi, Evil the Cat, and Bob the Killer Goldfish.

ROTOHEX seems to be an enhanced port of Dialhex. Neat.

I downloaded Secret of Mana and Super Mario RPG today, but now I'm having a problem. I can't seem to play these games on my HDTV with my component cables. I have to switch to my composite cables in order for me to be able to play them. Now my question is are any of you experiencing this same problem?

BTW: I play on a 32" Vizio
