Virtual Console: Wii-kly Update

Too bad Iron Mike is not in this one.
And why did Mr. Dream need to be a white guy? Couldn't he be hispanic or black?
Just another racial bump to throw into the pot. :-D

Oh well. I was kind of hoping to go toe-to-toe with the self-proclaimed Tyranosaurus Rex.

I'll still probably end up purchasing it with my credits.
I'm a Punch Out fan, all the way. :-D

I always sucked at Punch Out. My friends used to be able to play this game effortlessly, but I always struggled to get the win...

...The win which I never fully achieved. (Curse you, Don Flamenco!)

Virtua Fighter 2 was pretty nice on the Saturn. I never saw it on the Genesis.

Wasn't Sodapop Inski supposed to be a British drunkard at first?

Don Flamenco is easy, just try and punch him, he'll block it, then immediately dodge the punch that's coming up, right after you dodge just start laying into him. Repeat this pattern and you can beat him in less than 30 seconds, or 20, I can't remember.

This week's offering:

Gradius III - SNES - 800 Points
Wonder Boy in Monster World - Sega Genesis - 800 Points
Battle Lode Runner - TurboGrafx 16 - 600 Points

Woot @ gradius 3

Anyone know if old school game boy/game boy color games will ever make it to the VC? I missed out on some of the Zelda titles back in the day and I really don't want to have to play them on a tiny screen if I can help it.

Oracle of Ages and Seasons are the two Zelda games I've never played. >_>; I have the strategy guide too... /sigh

That'd be super cool, though.

They need to get back to givin' us quality releases. I want my Super Metroid and Super Mario RPG now!

If there's one thing that Nintendo's Virtual Console (not to mention those other game download services) is missing, it's strong RPGs. No, Sword of Vermillion doesn't count. Where are the Final Fantasys and Dragon Quests? Square Enix says don't hold your breath.

This is according to an interview with Square Enix rep Shinji Hashimoto in the Japanese magazine Nintendo Dream (handily translated and transcribed by IGN). Hashimoto had this to say specifically about bringing Square Enix's revered RPG franchises to the Virtual Console:

"We feel that the Japanese game market still requires [physical] media. Also, FF and Dragon Quest are played by a wide range of users, from children to adults, so there are limitations when you consider the problems that we would have with billing systems."

Real translation: If you really want to play Final Fantasy I and II, might I interest you in a couple of PSP games? As long as consumers are willing to pay much closer to full-price for these older games, Square Enix doesn't have a lot of motivation to follow Nintendo's pricing scheme.

Kinda doesn't surprise me, they'd rather just release remakes/ports on consoles/portables(fits in with their new business decisions)

Aye, but they've yet to do anything with Super Mario RPG and I could never get a working rom so they need to hurry it up. =P

I have to disagree. Besides, They already gave us Gradius, R- Type, and R-Type III. That makes 4 games that are absolutly the same.

They aren't the same at all. =/ That's like saying Final Fantasy is absolutely the same as Grandia or Star Ocean...

Well, you get in a ship, dodge bullets, and fight a boss at the end that turns into, mostly, a dodge fest. Their story, not really significant. While I do enjoy choice games from the genre, they do get repetative. That's just me though. I know a lot of people who'd straight cut my throat for the things I've said in this post and the last about them. RPG's are different in terms of being a book, to me. In RPG's I'm content on gettin' the story done, I don't care about hidden weapons and stuff, it's like playin' a book... a really... long... book. I got your point though I was just tossin' my two cents out there. I'm tired of seeing all these starship shooters and games no one played back then poppin' up when Super Metroid and company are sittin' in the vault beggin' for the light.

Well, it's not supposed to be about plot in every game. Even though the core mechanics of SHMUPs are the same... well... the core mechanics of most RPGs are the same. The difference lies in the power up system, the size of the enemies, layout of the stages...

And uh, those "starship shooters . . . no one played" were certainly played. Just because you didn't play them, doesn't mean nobody else did. I know quite a lot of people who are huge fans of Gradius, myself included. =/

For me, these shooters are all "buy on sight" so far. Gradius and R-Type were the third and fourth Virtual Console games I downloaded - right after Mario 64 and Mario Bros.

No no no, please don't get me wrong here... I was hopin' I wouldn't have to make this post. I wasn't saying "starship shooters no one played", like I said, I have friends that would probably cut me for slightly dissing them. I meant the "games no one played then" to be seperate hence the "and" between them. I should have worded it different or made a note then but eh, effort. On these notes, I'd like to see another effin' Ikaruga!
