This is mainly a question for Chasym because I know he has Vista as well. Anyways, when I start POL, it just says "PlayOnline was terminated, blah blah" (error report sort of like the ones on XP). Anyone know a way I can play FFXI with Vista? Or do I need to do a dual boot for XP just for FFXI?

By the way, I did try changing the compatibility of the game to XP with SP2, and it still didn't work. So that's out of the question.

:)

some people have been able to get ffxi to run on vista, What i did was i installed the game, and then i copied all the files from my xp installation over the new installation on Vista, that worked but stopped working after awhile, i had xp on a partition just for FFXI myself since Vista is listed as not compatable with FFXI yet, Its not FFXI itself, its POL that vista has the problem with.

I'll try a reinstall just in case. Maybe try a couple other things. But if I can't get it going, I'm just going to install Pro on my IDE or make a partition on my SATA (lol Sneak Attack Trick Attack) for it until it's supported better by SE (probably 2008, knowing SE lawl).

Edit: Meant to ask, how'd you get it working Reality?

Reality, how long were you able to do that? Because I was able to get the log into my moghouse thing to work also. Yet when I zoned out FFXI crashed.

Chasym, yeah some of that works. But then you get a message and you crash for an unknown reason.

To me, playing FFXI on vista is a lost cause until they actually support it. Don't get me wrong now vista is great as far as I'm concerned because I love it. But to do so much work to get a game to run on an OS when I have better OS for running said game...Does not compute.

i installed FFXI on an XP machine, back when i was running RC1 of vista, i copied the install over my home network to my PC, then ran playonline (as the one on my XP machine was completely up to date. POL out of the box will simply not run under vista)

later i upgraded vista to RTM (v6000), and have not had any problems whatsoever during gameplay. every once in a while when i shutdown the game, sometimes i get an error but thats after the games almost completely shut down. i have not had any in-game freezing issues under the RTM version of vista (and to think about it, i never had any of that under RC1 either, versions 5600, and a couple 57xx versions also)

Hmmm... I'll see what I can do about POL. If I can't get it working, I'll try what you guys did and install it on my roomate's laptop, update it, then zip it up, burn it, and put it on here. Need to get it done soon though. My Chocobo needs to be fed! :P

shaunessy; >_> if you read the chatlog in my screenshot you can clearly see i didnt just "log into my moghouse", lol

Well it seems as if it's working. POL started up and everything. Thanks for the info guys. Now to hope it runs well until there's a POL update to support Vista.

Edit: Had a slight scare that it wouldn't work there. The player kept wanting to update, but it was already updated. And it wouldn't let me put in my user info. But I entered all of it on my roomate's computer, copied it again, and it worked fine.

So for anyone who needs help getting FFXI running on Vista, here's a recap.

1. Install PlayOnline on another computer.

2. Update POL and enter your user info. Then exit POL.

3. Copy the PlayOnline Viewer directory to a portable media (default directory C:\Program Files\PlayOnline\Square Enix\PlayOnline Viewer)

4. Copy over all files when prompted.

5. Startup POL. It'll say it wants to update when you go to sign in. Just let it do it's work.

6. Restart POL and you're done!

Edit 2: It seems as if it won't save the changes I'm making to the Viewer, ie: Wallpaper and background music. I'll restart the viewer after I'm done installing FFXI and see if maybe that'll work.

All in all, I'm giving up on Vista until the release next month, when Microsoft starts supporting it along with many other software/hardware developers. After messing around with it for a while, it's just not worth the trouble. It's back to XP Pro for me for now.

I thought Vista wasn't backwords compatible with games and programs made for use on XP and back.

Well, it's supposed to be impossible to hack too :p If there's a will, there's a way ;)

Aparently my friends vista installation went screwy too, and completely screwed up the hard drive that he had it partitioned on... So I don't wanna check if mine's gone bad, incase it ruins my other partition (the one with windows installed on it :P)

man, i haven't had any problems with vista, other than this saturn emulator i downloaded doesn't work

all of you guys' problems sound like they're from the RC1/RC2 releases (where a lot of hardware wasn't officially supported), are you using the RTM release? it supports (officially) a lot more hardware than the RC's, although there is still hardware that isn't officially supported as Vista has not been released to the public yet, and there are a lot of hardware manufacturers that are procrastinating to produce drivers for Vista (i.e. Realtek AC97 audio drivers are garbage right now)

using RTM here.

if anyone doesnt wanna use vista right now, you can turn your xp into an identical vista by updating the GUI

Well hardware wise it was okay. My video card seemed to not want to work well with the 64 bit drivers for it when playing games (at least that's what I think my gaming problem was). And my G15 software was acting up at startup, but that's because I had the Windows XP x64 Edition software. Other than that it was mainly software problems. AIM wouldn't go online when I'd click the sign in button at all, McAfee wouldn't install right because it uses unsigned drivers, etc.
