I...Don't....Know...*gulp*...
I was checking out some stuff on ffxi.allakhazam.com, updating my profile, and I found a link to an interview with square about the relationship between Attack and STR and Defense and VIT. I don't know if anyone else was confused about this but I was and I was kinda sick of people examining me and telling me I should wear my Sandorian ring instead of my Verve ring. SOOOOOOO, anyway, here's the interview (cut short to include only the stats, full interview link is found at the bottom of the page.

In a January Interview, SqaureEnix was questioned on several points...

We have been told STR makes you do more damage, DEX makes you hit more often, AGI makes you get hit less often, and VIT makes you take less damage when you are hit. What players want to know is:
What is the relationship between VIT and "defense"? For example, does one point of VIT equal one point of "defense"? Some other relationship?

1xDef= 2xVIT

However, VIT and "defense" have their own seperate effects.

Def:

Defense lowers the standard damage variance and reduces average damage taken.

VIT:

Vitality lowers the actual damage curve itself and reduces the maximum amount of damage taken.

Taking into account the above values and figuring them against an opponent's STR, Attack, and Weapons DMG value, we finally arrive at the amount of damage taken.

Same question for STR and "attack":

1xAtk= 2xSTR

However, STR and "Attack" have their own seperate effects.

Attack:

Attack raises the standard damage variance and increases average damage given.

STR:

Strength raises the actual damage curve itself and increases the maximum amount of damage given.

Taking this into account along with the enemies VIT, Defense, and the DMG rating on your own wepaon we arrive at the amount of damage inflicted.

What about the relationship between DEX and Acuracy and AGI and evasion?

Accuracy does rely on DEX but it is more useful to raise accuracy directly than raise it by DEX. DEX does, however, help determine your own critical hit rate. Evasion does rely on AGI as well. But it is more useful to raise Evasion directly than to raise it by AGI. AGi does, however, help determine the amount of critical hits you take. The higher the DEX the more crits you score. The higher the AGI the less crits you take.

This information was taken from an interview with square enix at http://ffxi.crgaming.com/interviews/viewinterview.asp?Id=209 Enjoy!

AGI also effects Shield, Parry, and Ranged Accuracy (just to add to the above).

Its a good interview.

Thanks, also heard it affects the damage from Trick Attack and Dex affects Sneak Attack. Don't know how true this is but thought it's worth mentioning.

I do not have links handy, but it has been shown that:

~THF Mainjob Sneak Attack damage is based on STR+DEX+CriticalHit+Weapon

~THF Mainjob Trick Attack damage is based on STR+AGI+Weapon

~THF Subjob Sneak Attack damage is based on STR+CriticalHit+Weapon

~THF Subjob Trick Attack damage is based on STR+Weapon (in other words, it a normal, everyday, regular attack, that just transfers hate).

So the short of it is, when you are a main job THF, load up on DEX and AGI. When you sub thief, DEX and AGI are no longer bonused into those equasions.

oh wow
very good interview
good to know what the relationship between the stats are.....:)

More about stats

Keit,

Nice info on THF. Thanks! How about other jobs, any thoughts on how stats effect different jobs?

Most of the other jobs are effected normally at all times by the stats. Only a few abilities do tricky things with them, SA and TA being two of them.

I would need a specific question to answer, as you are basically asking me write a FFXI Guide (which I would do, if a publisher offered me money to write).

Anyone know how INT and MND work? I heard MND determines magic resistence and INT how fast you skill up casting abilities. But does either affect mp? :?

MND effects both the power/effectiveness and resistance to White-Type magic.

INT effects both the power/effectiveness and resistance to Black-Type magic.

CHR's effects are questionable, but it is know to effect the power/duration of some bard songs, as well as the Charm ability. It is rumored, also, to effect the power of Provoke.

Playing a bard with +25 CHR, and having mobs run to me mid-way through a fight when the only thing I've done is sing songs, I'm inclined to believe that CHR does play a part in hate.

Logically, one would assume that 'More CHR' = 'People/Monster like you better". This, normally, would lead you to believe that higher CHR would mean less hate.

However, it seems that if anything, the opposite is true.

I think its that People like you more, but monsters hate you, since they are evil. Or somthing like that.

I find it VERY hard to believe that rabbits are sheep are 'evil'...

I don't know about sheep, but man, did you not see Monty Python and the Holy Grail?

Also, Bugs Bunny was pretty evil.
