So guys, remember how they said Portals and Team Fortress 2 would come packaged with Episode 2?

Well, they lied. You can only get a package deal buying the Orange Box or their other mega packages.

On top of that, Episode 2 by itself is more than what Episode 1 was at launch.

What a bunch of douchebags.

I was confused by this at first too, but Orange Box $45 with TF2, Episode 2, and Portal, which is an acceptable price in my opinion. Ep1 and HL2 are just a bonus if you haven't already bought them I suppose.

Yes, but I'd rather have had the $30~$40 Black Box option instead of being cornholed in to buying the $50 Orange Box.

Since you know

I own Half-Life 2 and Episode 1 already.

I was admittedly too focused on Portal to know they were planning this. They were originally going to sell just the newer stuff for a bit lower price? That is just lame. :/

lol more chocolate in gabe's mouth

Technically, it's not a lie. They're still packaged with EP2 it just so happens they decided to pack EP1 and the original Half-Life 2 with it as well XD. Still, $45 is cheap for three new games. Hell, I'll be payin' $60 just for TF 2, I could care less about the other games.

It is, sadly, I looked it up after Skaw mentioned it. Google "valve black box". It was going to be $10 less. :/ It's still a good value, but disappointing that it wasn't a better value. You'll be able to give away the keys for HL2 and Ep1 if you already have them after Orange Box is released, but that's not really any consolation...

Ah, talkin' about there bein' a cheaper box than the Orange. I only knew about the Orange Box. The way it seems they package their games on their site, I don't get this now myself. I still don't see a lie (you're getting a package with EP: 2, TF 2, and Portal still) but I can see where people will be upset with spending an extra $10 to buy something they already have, that's just stupid. Personally I don't like the fact that I'll have to buy any of the Half-Life games. I'm not a fan, at all, but I'm wanting Team Fortress 2 something fierce. God knows it'll be better than havin' to play Halo 3 until UT3 hits.

Is Portal a half-length game or some shit?

I was planning to pay $60 for that alone. Throw in 2 episodes of HL2 I haven't seen (was waiting for a trilogy pack) plus TF2 for free, I feel like I'm screwing them not the other way around.

I honestly don't know about the length of Portal. I do know there will undoubtedly be more player-created levels for it, and probably multiplayer. If Valve doesn't add it, it'll probably be forced in by some creative modding eventually.

Either way, I'd purchased Orange Box just before this post was made, I've been playing TF2 quite a bit. They've got most of the major bugs under control, thankfully, I've been enjoying it greatly.

From everything I've read, Portal is a very short game (in the 3-6 hour range, I think). I don't mind a short game if it's good -- i.e. Shadow of the Colossus -- and can't really knock the length when I consider the value of the overall package.

And you never know. If the feedback is positive, they might make a full-length Portal 2 standalone game.

Oh that's gay. Portal has so much potential... then again it might just be a ripoff of Prey's portal generator which totally owned. That game needs a sequel.

Nah, not a ripoff of Prey. Those portals were in pre-set locations. The portals from Portal can be placed anywhere, with various results.

I agree Prey could use a sequel, though.

Oh right it wasn't by default... there was a mod made for Prey where you could create portals anywhere you wanted.

Did the same thing myself that the Portal demo was showing off - place one on the roof, one on the floor, and jump through until you're travelling at about mach 17.

Nah, Portal is based strongly on Narbacular Drop, a small freeware game some game design students threw together. (I think they actually hired the people who did it...) Not sure how Prey was, but I'd think Portal is a fair bit different.

It's a little unfortunate that the default game will be shorter, but there WILL be player created mods, since the entire game is puzzle-centric, and maybe even something from Valve later on, who knows.

Puzzle game? Snap, I was expecting a shooter.

No real shooting that I know of. The whole thing fits into the HL universe though. The only thing I think you're armed with is a combo portal gun/gravity gun. The main character is enrolled (probably forcibly, lawl) in some sort of experiment, presumably as a trial for the portal gun, and has to make her way around obstacles and such. There's "combat", which mostly involves knocking over/throwing away/disabling turrets, possibly some other things. There might be normal combat later on too, who knows. Overall I'd definitely say it's some sort of action-puzzle hybrid.

Edit: TF2 is almost worth the price of admission by itself, to be honest. I've been playing on a 32 person server for a few hours now, it's madness and/or sparta.

Team Fortress 2 is worth it though, most fun i've had playing mutiplayer in a long time...and I hate FPSs

*shrug* Orange box is a great deal, and since its also for PS3, i'm just getting that eddition.

It's a great deal.. It's just a dick move to cancel the black box.

Sure, I can give HL2 and Episode 1 out.. if I knew someone without either. And if I did, then they'd be forced in to buying the Orange Box to get the missing games as well.
