complete with an explanatory video. A group in new york has begun a campaign of sorts to allow people to share files off line. these "dead drops" are USB drives embedded into walls in public areas that you can plug your laptop into and upload and/or download files onto.

to me this sounds like one of those nifty "sounds good on paper" ideas. i personally wouldn't bring my laptop to one of these things for obvious reasons. and aside from the eventual virus problem, i also wonder how long they will even last before some fool just flat out breaks the things.

The only things these will have is porn and STD's.

also... what moron would just push there laptop up against the wall like that, wouldn't someone who did this get a usb extension cord so you don't scuff up the side of your laptop?

One can only hope...but I wouldn't be surprised if the majority of people using these things just went right up there and jacked in. I'm on the side of this being a retarded idea.

On paper it's a nifty idea. A bunch of cloudless storage bins for people to use at the same time sticking it to The Establishment.

In reality it's a retarded idea for a couple of reasons:
  • Drops could be stolen with minimal effort
  • Malware could easily be uploaded
  • Drops would be ruined in a short period of time since it looks like all of them are exposed to the elements

In short, having unprotected sex with a 60 y/o lifetime hooker is the only thing might be a worse idea.

That's the first thing I mentioned to Justin when I saw it. I was like "who would want to scuff up their laptop by rubbing it against a rough wall?"

But think: if people are dumb enough to hook up to one of these hubs (likely) filled with viruses, wouldn't they also be stupid enough to scuff up their laptop in the process?

I hope "the man" puts tracking software on each of them that will tell him where to find all these idiots when they go online.

This looks pretty hilarious. I'd be curious to see what people would actually bother uploading in between the porn and malware.
