what is this person thinking?

All right, I think our miscommunication here is obviously the definition of "skill." The way I use the word... FFXI and most any other MMORPG lacks any real skill (unless people actually count things like typing and timing a macro as a skill).

This game does, however, require cooperation, communication, and an understanding of the job you're playing, including, but not limited to, job abilities and magic timers as well as gear choices (and quite possibly the jobs of other people in the case of something like a White Mage main healing a party with a Paladin in it for example). Some things require a strategy. These are all things I would not consider a skill. If you are a Red Mage and understand haste cycles you're not skilled; you're simply not retarded. It's such a basic skill, especially for a level 75 character, that it's far from even being qualified as an actual skill. Perhaps common sense at best.

No amount of skill is going to make you gain TP faster. No amount of skill is going to make you skill chain for more damage. No amount of skill is going to make you hit a magic burst for more damage. No amount of skill is going to make you take less damage (unless, of course, you consider counting to four a skill; and only when you have access to Utsusemi).

Skill in this game is artificial to me... like duoing something that could easily be done with more people. That activity is rarely, if ever, required to do anything in this game, so my final point is this game, as it stands, requires no real skill. Dodging aggro without using sneak/invisible could be considered a skill, but it's far from necessary. Maybe that clears some things up on my use of the word skill.

Regardless, the OP image sports gear that doesn't even resemble an attempt at gearing themselves properly. I'm not expecting uber leet gear from people, especially in level capped events (I said earlier that some level capped events don't even have good options for some slots, like back piece for melee pre-50), but I do ask for an attempt. Using a Garrulous Ring and Courage Ring combination at level 60 says one thing to me. Not only is that person gimped at level 60, they don't even own basic rings that people use at level 75. Darkfelicity stated she was pimped out at 50, but if I don't even see Woodsman/Venerer/Jaeger/Sniper's ring in both slots there's a good chance you're just straight up gimp, and to a further extent, "unskilled." There's the likelihood that you have some higher leveled accuracy rings, but that's very damn low, especially considering the gear combinations in the OP's images.

for all those who purchased this game, and all of its expansion packs... as well as the monthly charges...
its your game
play it the way YOU want to play
Uh, no. Actually, it's everybody's game. Play it the way YOU want to play as long as it doesn't negatively affect others.

Granted, it doesn't apply in this situation, since whatever happened was between friends, everyone knew what they were getting into, and it was acceptable to everyone, but your statement is overall very inconsiderate.

It's the old "I pay so I'll do what I want!" routine, and it got old years ago.

From what I hear I am being flamed bye a member of resurrection HAHAHAH I don't even have to say much you are doomed already.

...and your point? the members of ress are hard working members that are often in sky 4-5 nights a week. whats your problem with the shell? especially to bring it up in this piss poor flame?

and no, raian is not a member.

Who the hell is Raian, or this guy for that matter:

So . . . communications, interpersonal skills, job experience, strategizing . . . none of these equate to skill to you. Gotcha.

Rdms who understand a Haste cycle shouldn't be considered skilled, I'll freely grant you that. Rdms that can occupy entire hordes of VT mobs with Sleep, Sleepga, Sleep II, Gravity, and Bind might be worth an honorable mention though.

No amount of skill is going to make you gain TP faster. No amount of skill is going to make you skill chain for more damage. No amount of skill is going to make you hit a magic burst for more damage. No amount of skill is going to make you take less damage

No amount of gear is going to teach you how to backup heal a party, Stun a gob toss, and STILL hit the MB. No amount of gear is going to teach you how to deal with the aggro you never learned how to avoid. No amount of gear is going to teach you it might be a good idea to turn your back after a particularly good WS so you're not a total mp sponge til the tank can get a firm grip on hate again. No amount of gear is going to teach you how to dodge DOEs and AOEs and which mobs use which. No amount of gear is going to teach you it might be a better idea to save tp for a Stun WS because your Drk just bit the dust, the Blm just used his, and your healer's out of mp. No amount of gear is going to teach you that you actually have two magic menues at your disposal and keeping situational spells cued up on those can save you some valuable time and macro space.

P.S. Couldn't help but notice you dodged right past my first two examples I provided and jumped right on the only one you thought you could refute. Care to address the other two?

It does sound like there was a bit of miscommunication.

I just want to make sure I'm picking up what you're putting down. Understanding modifiers such as elemental magic skill vs. intelligence vs. magic attack bonus and how each can have an impact on how much damage any nuke does (including magic burst) is not what you would define as a skill. The way I'm getting what you're writing is that those things are important, but they're not what you define as skills. Is that correct?

What do you define as skills?

Okay, have fun with your gimpy "skilled" friends while you brag about writing neat notes in pretty handwriting. Care to quit being stupid and actually read what I say or do you want to dodge my initial point that this game DOES NOT require skill. Because I could've posted the same God damned thing for either of your other two "points."

Every time you use phrases like "as long as they're not a complete dumbass," "has half a brain," etc., you're inserting qualifiers for skill. The level of skill required can vary greatly depending on which job you're discussing, but it's always there, and it always makes a difference.

Right, I guess walking is a skill too. Don't be stupid. This game doesn't require skill, it requires thinking. Applying COMMON knowledge is not skill.

That's saying that the Blm sporting a full set of HQ Staves, Genie gear, and a Sorcerer's ring who's droppin hurt bombs and dying in the first twenty seconds of a fight is somehow superior to the Blm in NQ gear who throws the appropriate DoTs, nukes lightly til it can really make a difference, and knows that Drain is a Blm's most mp-efficient(not to mention almost hate-free) weapon.

Anyone doing that is fucking retarded. It's not a skill, it's a lack of applying knowledge correctly.

What do you define as skills?

MMORPGs don't actually have any required level of real skill outside of reading up on it. I posted two examples of things that could be skill, but again, they're not required skills. An FPS, on the other hand, requires skill. Ninja Gaiden is a game that requires skill and quick reflexes. Time Crisis requires skill (up until the point where you just memorize the game). Guitar Hero, even though I hate the game, requires skill to play. MMORPGs rely msotly on gear and knowledge.

I play Beastmaster, arguably the hardest and most skill-required job in the game, and I would not say that is even a skill. Hitting a release macro and charming a monster is not a skill. Constantly getting head shots in Counterstrike is a skill.

Skills don't apply just to games, obviously. A craft or a profession, such as carpentry, requires applying knowledge, using it, and being able to use tools in a timely manner. It's not something just anyone can pick up and do effectively. But if I gave someone 200,000 gil and showed them how the game works I'm sure they would be getting solo chain #3's at the very beginning of the game.

The problem with saying this game requires skill is that you can overcome just about anything by swapping out alliance members or throwing more money at it. Hence the main reason there is no such thing as skill in this game.

I think people are using the word "Skill" just to communicate how well they play the game. Some people are faster at casting spells, selecting targets, etc. Efficient players are the most skillful players in my mind.

Also, when you dumb it down, even breathing is a skill. It's why I don't just say everything you do is a skill.

Under that definition I agree, yes.

Since you didn't read it the first time apparently...
People are using the word "skill" to mean exactly what it means. And no, breathing isn't a skill. Maybe controlled breathing, but that's another story.

Advanced motor function, walking, that could be called a skill, and yes, there are some people who are better even at that than others. Just because it's something you take for granted doesn't mean it's a skill others lack, and believe me, they do.

Listen, jackass. I've been civil up til you decided to try to look like the big man.

Come track me and my gimpy friends down sometime. Tell me how gimpy we are then. You've obviously got your head too far up your own ass to realize that I never once said that skill was all that was required. I just said(in not so many words) that a well-geared dumbass is still a dumbass.

And by the way, dipshit, the textbook definition that Garv's supplied you . . . twice . . . is the very essence of what skill is - applied knowledge. Be sure to reserve a word of thanks for all those gimps that figured out all that COMMON KNOWLEDGE before you ever got here.

So you don't do events or help other people out? Way to be a dick. Protip: I'm done with level capped events. Don't assume shit, it makes you look stupid.
No. I don't help people out unless they are friends. And I believe I mentioned earlier that all of my friends are done with said events.

The bolded part is true. Hence why the OP is stupid. And I were simply guessing you weren't done with lvl capped events. You kept bitching about it, so, I guessed you're one of the people that keeps messing events up, but blame others for your own misstakes.

Breathing, the act of moving any part of your body, walking, seeing, listening, eating, etc. are all instincts. Some instincts are there from birth, but requires training in order to become better at it, such as crawling to walking to running. How to move your hand is an instinct, not a skill. Moving your hand to make art is a perfection of that instinct, and thus a skill.

Casting your refresh macro isn't an instinct. Its something you should know how to do once you're a high-level RDM, because you learned it. Keeping a refresh cycle up is a perfection of that knowledge, and keeping a refresh cycle up that never wears off, is an even further perfection of that skill.

Skill can simply be a perfection of basic knowledge that you should know. Anyone can create art, but only a few can create art that sells.

Actually, I think saying "Skill can simply be a perfection of basic knowledge that you should know. Anyone can create art, but everyone can't create art that sells." would be better.
