I'm not sure what job I want to start over as. What do you think? ^^

I've decided on being a Taru again. on Phoenix I was a 75whm/45smn/45blm/37rdm/29sam

So any suggestions? :D

I suggest to make up your own mind rather than taking other people's advice and leveling something you may not like...

For the love of god, dont be a mnk, war, whm, blm, rdm or Thf... too many of them already.

yeah, you forgot to add ninja into that equation.

There can never be too many Dark Knights, Allegretto!

but frsrsly. the only person in this convo to listen to is jamal; play around with yer jobs, and level something that, first and foremost, you have FUN with.

ive played all the jobs to some extent

and im indecisive.. D: someone make up my mind.

This is close to correct. Very close.

Another correct answer would deal with anything other than FFXI. But you didn't hear this from me. Onry from Neo. Or Mr. Waffle. Whatever you want to call him. Shyrra has another name for him but I dare not to repeat such on a public board.

What sort of role do you want to have? Damage dealer? Support (usually includes refresh, dispel, sleep)? Healer? Tank? Some combo of the above?

From that broad role, then go on to ask yourself more questions. For example, if a DD, do you want to be frontline or ranged? Magical or physical damage? MP or TP dependent? Spike damage or DoT?

Is soloing exp a priority? Is soloing non-exp stuff a priority? Do you care highly about invite rate?

Answering questions like that ought to narrow you down to only a handful of jobs. Beyond that you can just look at their individual quirks and decide what to go with.

Remember, too, that you're not stuck with just one job, you can level multiple 75s, theoretically all 18 jobs to 75, if you want to.

Also, about those six starter jobs - even if you don't pick any of them to be an eventual main, most of them are popular subs and worth levelling for that reason alone. So even if you can't decide exactly right now, if you're leaning towards being more mage, start with WHM BLM or RDM, and if you're leaning to be more melee/tank, start with WAR or MNK.

I highly suggest *not* starting with THF though. Pre-15 it's just plain painful, and that's with a subjob. Take some other job to 18 to unlock sub before you start on THF. Even if THF is an intended main or sub of yours, you're probably better off starting with WAR or MNK, at least to 18.

We need more "ffxi sucks" posts in our ffxi forums. Really, we do.

As for the op, you've done whm before. Was it interesting or did you want to be more in the action? If you like being a mage but want to do more hurting then healing, you could try blm. Or for a mix of the two with its own uniqueness there's also rdm. If you don't wanna do the mage thing again you can choose between melee or tank. There's always the oddball jobs like brd, pup, blu, etc. Really just play as many jobs as you can at the lower levels where time isn't a huge investment and figure out which type you like then focus on those jobs and take them a little higher until one wins out.

Eh Can't stand rdm, way too much multitasking for my short attention span. that why it got stuck at 37.

Whm was alot of fun at first, but it's redundent after I while. BLM would be cool, but from what I remember invite rate sucked pre-manaburn.

Melee could be cool, except for my loltaru HP >_>;; MNK always interested me because of it's potential DMG output. /sigh
I just dno D:

don't ever let your HP make you feel like you can't melee. I can keep up with the beefier DRKs in my level, and in some cases, outdamage those higher than me (DoT-speaking).

This is how I considered it when I chose dark knight:

Ok, I don't have a lot of HP. What *do* I have? Boat-loads of INT, higher DEX and AGI than everyone except a Mithra, and I as such, I can load up on STR as much as I want.

My boat-loads of INT mean I can absorb-xxx all day long, buff myself while debuffing the mob, and waylay the mob making it easier for everyone to kill.

My good DEX and AGI means that a) I don't necessarily *need* a crapton of +acc gear (read: PCC, snipers), and b) while when I *do* get hit, sure it hurts, I *don't* really get hit that often.

Loading up on STR? 'nuff said.

Don't ever discourage yourself from something that looks interesting because "meh, I don't have much HP". If that was the case all the time, you wouldn't see any Galkamages :)

DRK is a fun job! :D I just hated unlocking it, that was the most tedious thing i've ever done (next to choco license quest). So maybe I'll go Melee this time around.

Also.. Galka Mages are a myth, like the Loch Ness Monster. Pics or it didn't happen! >:P

You probably won't notice racial stat differences for anything other than:

1. A lowbie taru tank.
2. A lowbie galka/elvaan main healer.

And by "lowbie" I mean, like, dunes and maybe Qufim. The higher you get, the more spells and abilities you have to work with for survivability and efficiency, and the more gear options you have.

Yes, at high levels, there will be a few hundred HP or MP difference between equally geared/merited people of different races, but generally if you're low enough in your HP or MP pool to where the difference would actually mean something, you've got problems anyway. But 99% of the time it really doesn't matter.

And the differences in base stats other than HP and MP are even *more* negligible and meaningless.

Honestly, pick a race for what you want to look like, and pick a job for what you want to play, and don't concern yourself with how well they pair up. Gear (and later, merits) and above all, player skill (though this is no excuse for shoddy gear) will have far more impact on your effectiveness than race ever will.

I agree with Vilurum. Don't let your race keep you from doing a job you like. I'm a Taru and I enjoy playing PLD and getting the piss knocked out of me. Sure my hp is lower but with the MP pool I have, I can keep myself healed without a problem. At level 63 I have 1023HP/473MP. It's less HP then other races at that level, but I think it's more MP than a 75 of any other race. There are also a lot of taru's that play melee jobs, and some are exclusively melee and won't touch a mage job period. Like Vil said, it's player skill, gear choices, and merits that can make up the differences for race. Do what you like, have fun, and Taru's rule! That's all that matters.

Peace,
Shmed

Go with Warrior as your first job to 30 start by leveling monk to 18 then get SJ then level warrior to 30 then decide if you want to keep with warrior or switch.

Edit: The invites don't start sucking until people start leveling on greater colibri, but there are other things that people will exp on there are just as good where BLM is handy.

60+ is when the invites are not slow but non-existent. You can solo 300-500 exp per kill in the new areas. I solo'd and duo'd from 60ish-73 with the exception of 1 pt around 71.

Peace,
Shmed
