What was your "Gateway" Anime?

I guess Voltron or Speed Racer but the first one I watched and knew it was an anime was the Original Vampire Hunter D. For some reason it was shown late nights on TBS back in the 80's...

Ever since that....o__o I've only liked and watched samurai type anime.

Favorite of all time : Rurouni Kenshin
 
Akira, Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo & Ghost in the Shell.
 
Always watched "anime" (or cartoons if you don't count Saber Rider, Captain Future and such as anime) since I was little but the first real thing that got me into it was MD Geist...followed by Sailor Moon...don't laugh I had no internet back then ><
 
Voltron, Gundam, and Trigun.

DBZ was my first anime although I dislike it to this day. There were earlier animes although I didn't know the difference and I think the poor English dubs were always a turn off for me. I can't honestly think of the first anime I really enjoyed though that had an actual storyline. I want to say Escaflowne, but I don't know...
 
Trigun broke my cherry. Years ago, McFarlane came out with a line of anime figures and I had no idea wtf they were. The Vash the Stampede figure was really awesome. Couple years later I saw it on clearance and actually bought it and put it in my entertainment center. A friend saw it and said "Hey, cool, I didn't know you watched Trigun." My response was "What the fuck is Trigun?"

Favorites ever though: Samurai Champloo and Cowboy Bebop, if not for the great stories, the music alone in both series is outstanding.
 
well this is gonna sound strange but im gonna say reboot. Because i started watching it and liked it alot so i started to experiment with anime. I went from there to DBZ, trigun, cowboy bebop, Ghost in my shell, Samurai Champloo, eureka 7, and now im stuck on bleach somewhere in the episode 125 area. (little behind)

As u can prob tell i watch a fair amount of adult swim but i dont stay behind in the episodes i typically watch one or 2 and if i like it i download the entire series dubd.

ReBoot doesn't count, it was Canadian CGI :p

Pokemon for sure. I was 10 when it was introduced. DBZ was awesome of course. Sailormoon I watched before pokemon. Digimon. All the mainstream ones that you saw on YTV (Canadian network)

But that feeling of discovering Pokemon is that feeling of discovering adventure. I want my career to circle around that feeling, creating something for another kid. Game, comic, book, cartoon, etc. Anything in story form. It got me thinking, and I think i'll start writing soon because of it.


I have a question though. You all name these animes I never even heard of. How do you know them? Was there some channel I missed growing up?

Wow oddly enough that's basically for me (well it went SPC>Sailor Moon>Pokemon etc). But yeah I did love that feeling of watching a new episode of a show like Pokemon or DBZ just thinking of possibilities of what I could create. I would have started writing all of these things long ago, I have ADD and a extremely short attention span:wink:

Same, its a curse we have.

Best thing to do is a have a book to jot dot ideas.
