SAM/RNG 4tw bro!

what I normally when /RNG is melee to 100TP back up for Sidewinder, then Meditate for another then finish with a Barrage, which should give you enough TP for another.

ppl who are too lazy to move back a few steps to unleash a sidewinder is weak if you ask me.

Yes the damage out put from Sidewinder is nice, but why invite a SAM to a party to do RNG WS? So if someone invited you as SAM/RNG and they want to set up a good SkillChain and they ask you to do a GK weapon skill instead of Sidewinder, thats one of your playing cards gone right there.

As for Barrage it CAN do nice damage but it COULD also do weak damage, and worst case it could miss all together. Unless you can max out Rng acc theres no real point to SAM/RNG, and if you do max out Rng Acc the gear you have choosen probably hurts other aspects of SAM as a whole.

Just my opinion...

I agree with the pick what sub you want but don't expect invites.

On another note, with /thf you get the hate control which i think makes up for the extra possible damage of a really good sam/rng. There are probably at least 2 other DD in the party that can do more damage without taking too much hate if you SATA.

SAM/RNG never tried it did SAM/DRG alot when that drk craze was about as i could SC and drk was /thf did not need /war asthe DOT was = from jumps and no TP patch from penta preety muched owned with all the store TP i had plus taru looked cute.

Woah, woah, woah. SAM Sharpshot -> Sidewinder -> Meditate -> Sidewinder is next to useless?
It's useless if the first one pulls hate, because the 2nd one at point blank range will do less damage than a Great Katana ws that doesn't have a 20% chance of missing.

Doing something unorigional is something not many people look at and say "hey i want to invite them". People are afraid of change, and will hardly give a second glance if you try something YOU think is better.
That's part of it, and the rest is that often when people look to "x" job to fill a party spot, they want it to fill a specific function. Yes you can use an acid dagger as a rdm/rng in full acc gear, using only gravity on the mob and refresh/haste on yourself. You'll be providing a benefit to the party, but it's not why the party leader invited a rdm. Filling a specific role often requires a specific subjob.

If I'm making a party to exp in Lufaise, I'm not gonna invite a mnk or rng without a ninja sub. If I'm looking for someone to plant hate on a tank to close a SC for a heavy melee DD, I'm not gonna take anyone besides thf or /thf. If you restrict yourself to one subjob, you restrict the roles you can play in a party. If you're subbing something that makes little sense over something with an obvious huge benefit, then you'll get very few invites.

Some where i heard TaUo is a no sj area might be good if true

Here is the thing and this argument has been discussed many times. There is a fine line between doing what you want and effecting others. Sure you pay for the game so you have rights to play any way you want. But when you agree to get into an exp party you are now effecting five other player's game and yuo owe it to them to provide a job combo that that works best.

Not saying your wrong or anyhting just brining up the point that sure yuo are entitled to play your own way but you have to consider the fact then in a game such as this unless your soloing your ablities and choices effect others too

Well said.

Basically its fine to play the way you want, however if you will be playing with other people and you aren't able to maximize the potential of whatever it is your doing because of your choice, thats when it becomes a problem. I'm against people trying to tell you how to play, however when people give you advice how to play and get better benefits (such as xping, and having a SUBJOB that will greatly impact and make the xping go faster) then i'm not opposed to this.

An example is a warrior (talking valkurm - qufim lvls) who chooses a polearm or greatsword over an axe or greataxe. You ask them why they choose these, and the response is "because it looks cool!". But truth is by having a "cool look" you're not really helping the party, you're hindering it because your dmg is not reaching its potential. This is when "doing what you want" isn't the best approach, because if you're in a party with other people, you're now hindering their xp as well.

If you're playing on your own however, then you're free to decide to play however you want.

Wars can basicly use staffs swords G sword axe G axes sythes pole arm anything and DD well lol more like a drg using a sword

Just like Rangers have the best BOw end game amirite?

So basically, you're pigeon-holing yourself by not being flexible at all.

...Which is fine. It's completely fine.

But you have to expect that a PT may take a different player versus you if you aren't willing to bend. And you need to understand that that is also completely fine.

If a PT lead sends you a/tell and requests you to bring /WAR and you say no can do, you certainly can't be upset at that PT lead for not sending the invite after that. PT lead wants something, and so do you...They just aren't the same thing. Nobody to fault or blame, and no reason to complain about it.

If you merely want XP invites quicker, learn to be flexible.
What's more important to you, getting some XP or proving to the world that SAM/RNG is viable?

CHances are, after the party is over and done with, those who were in it will remember if you played well, or did not...They will not think to themselves, "That guy is changing the way I look at SAM/RNG."
Why?
Other SAM/XXX doing bang up jobs in XP, making no mention of their subjob aside from, "What would the PT like me to sub?"

If you're dead set on wanting to try new subs I'd suggest looking to your sociol LS.

From there you can make the occasion casual party on the forums and not be strict about details and setups if you can find other people that have the same outlook.

For example, I tried whm/war @ 36-38 with a big hammer in a all LS party. Me and the smn/whm shared healing, I was able to melee fairly decently with sole sushi without letting mp become a problem with the ninja tank, and the the smn was able to MB and such.

I also tried many other wierd or not so common, yet still effective combinations out there: thf/drk - DE was never more fun, thf/sam - I was able to Sc with two people, whm/brd - paeon II for the melees actually saved me a lot of mp overall, and I'm sure ballad for all 2-4 mages would've been sweet if I was 50+, drk/whm, drk/blm, drk/brd pre 30 - /war had little use pre berserk in my opinion, so I made use of my mp. I'm sure drk/rng and thf/rng would've been great 20-29 if tried them at the time 20-29.

I'd also like to go mnk/drg 20-29 when/if I ever level monk for jump and attk bonus. If I ever took rdm up, I'd feel inclined to give rdm/brd a shot since I admire the combination.

Also another suggestion. You 'may' have luck on the events section of the forums. For example

Topic: Very casual X-Y level xp party

And inside you could explain that you're shooting to make a one time, two time, or whatever party that will be a break from FFXI reality by allowing the people joining to sub whatever they want.

But if you want to try unusual subs, I think you'll have bad luck just throwing the flag up and hoping for random people to accept you.

what kinda gimp combo? SAM/RNG i don't understand.
Damn why are you dead set on being SAM/RNG.
If you have to be that, at least have the other subs available. Often there are times the party doesnt care what sub i have since im there to simply DD. I don't know about you but when im put in a party, I'm there to open or close a SC so the BLM can burst. that extra 200 dmg from your 2 sidewinders every 3 mins wont help out much at all.

I'm kind of interested in SAM/RNG but not for Ranged Attacks, just for the passive effect of +22 accuracy that you get at 60. Was thinking if you get about +38 or more in accuracy gear to go with it you could use Riceballs and get a ton of attack without losing accuracy. Have not tried it yet though.

You're free to sub whatever you want the same way other people are free to not invite you for it.

Quoted for the freakin' truth. >_>

I got no invites as a DRG/THF even though I was uber. :(

Probably because /THF isn't good for DRG. >_>;

All the way up to level 30, a Warrior will have 93 Axe/Gaxe skills, and 89 dagger/sword/gswd/club/staff/polearm/scythe skills. Four points isn't that big a deal if the said Warrior has good enough gear. In some cases, too, the Warrior can use a level 30 latent effect belt to get +5 skill in a weapon - probably the best case being WAR/DRG with a Lance Belt.

It's actually a good idea, too, for a Warrior to have different weapons available - for example, at 31-35 or thereabouts, the "standard" exp zone is Garlaige Citadel. The main targets there are Bats, which are weak to Piercing damage. Normally for a piercing setup you'd get DRG > THF or RNG > THF skillchain, but a Warrior with a polearm (possibly also subbing DRG to wear that belt) can easily fill the open Distortion slot (which I did myself 31-34).

It's all situational really.

I just talked to an RL friend who started about this. They want to become a Pld very badly.. So asked me "Why can't I just use a sword from 1-30?". It took a while to explain (their first day) how each weapon is useful, when it's useful (Axe vs G.Axe) and that Sword were -not- really a good War weapon. While okay for Dunes, after that people would pitch fits...
"But I am going to play pld, why would I want axe?"
You play with other people. When I solo, I enjoy the way I play and I do things my way.. in a PT I sit back, debuff, refresh, haste, MB.. no melee, very little random nuking..
It's that simple, in Solo you think of 1 person, yourself. In PT you think of the other 5 too.

all i gotta say.. is if ur gonna march to the beat of ur own drum.. u better have the $dollar signs$ to back it up and know what ur doin.

lolrecently.. im lvling my drk sub to 37.. and when i hit 33..
I sold my greatsword, bought 2 archer knives, donned my PCA and other ranged accuracy crap, subbed ninja, and went to garliage..

acid bolts are sweet for one thing..
100+ dmg holy bolts
and archer knives that can swing for 60-100 dmg each when souleater is up lol.. its fun as hell lol.

But alas.. my neglect of sword and scythe skill ups only reflects the fact that im not taking it past 37. If i was, I would level up my weapons properly.
