I'm a 75 White Mage who wants to try his hand at soloing. Mainly I want to start farming a bit and taking an active role in procuring seals for BCNM fights.

What sort of gear should I be looking to acquire and what sort of soloing strategies should I follow? (Leveling Ninja isn't viable for me right now since I don't have the gil to really put the effort needed into learning how to play that job effectively.)

My combat skills are rather gimpy my club is at 174.9 (almost to True Strike) and my Staff skill is 140ish...But I do plan on skilling up to acceptable levels in the next few weeks/months.

Beastmaster is a great subjob for White Mage (or really any job) if you enjoy soloing, though if your Beastmaster's job level is low, charming will be difficult and short-lived. =/

/WAR and /RDM are both decent (WAR sub does more overall damage, but /RDM's phalanx can reduce damage taken by a pretty good amount - especially useful if you're fighting MNK mobs as it'll drop most EP-- MNK's hits to 0), so those can be good choices as well.

Gear-wise, Tariqa(or whatever it's called, L73ish shield) is a good choice if you can't get ahold of a Genbu's Shield. Brass Jadagna is the best club you can buy and is relatively cheap...Blessed set is excellent for it's +haste. Black Cotehardie or Tabin Jupon are both rather cheap (Tabin not so much) and work quite well if you're into gearswapping for WS.

Hope this helps a little.

/drk can be a viable sub, but dont use souleater, not worth the risk. Depending on what you are soloing you may need a stun to save yourself from a head shot.

P.S. Go solo the HNM rams in Latheine and Konschtat as /war, and make some nice gil ^^

I'm a fan of /nin for soloing. Utsusemi x2 and Stoneskin are a sweet combo.

As for gear....Well i'm cheap and i have the memory of a fish(3 mins) and tend to forget to buy melee gear. Theres a thread in Endgame discussion for whm solo gear. Be sure to read it. it's full of some good tips.

Edit: Because blaze is a dork i'll fix what i said. I'm a FAN of /nin. Never said you had to use it. /bst is a great one to sub.

They said /nin wasn't a Feasible option in their current situation.

I like soloing on whm/rdm using Phalanx and en-spells and keeping on a shield (I have genbu's but really any will do). Assuming you're soloing lower level stuff and even moreso now in Signet areas with Signet on if you can land Blind the mobs will miss so much that your Stoneskin and Phalanx alone will last a long time, then just Flash and recast SS. But yeah, Blessed hands and legs and even feet if you want to + w.turban will have you attacking pretty fast (though if you need the acc which you might due to club skill, feel free to sub in an o.hat). You can pick up acc on your neck and rings, too. Ignore STR gear until you have acc and speed covered, all the STR in the world is useless if you aren't hitting often or quickly.

Honestly, I never tried soloing on WHM until I got Hexa Strike. But... I had my club up to around 170 on THF before I took my WHM up. I just joined skillup PTs every few levels to keep my skill up to date once I got higher, so I had Hexa Strike right at 67. I tried soloing stuff a time or two pre-Hexa Strike, but it was really hard (my magic skills were also lacking at that time, though, and I wasn't used to soloing on a mage job).

One thing that will help immensely when soloing: capped enhancing skill. If your enhancing isn't capped, go stand outside town and spam barspells until it is. :P It helps with 2 very important things: how much damage Stoneskin absorbs, and how often you'll get interrupted casting Stoneskin (and other enhancing spells, but Stoneskin is the important one). Then basically, just make sure you have up Protect, Shell, Haste, and Stoneskin at all times. When Stoneskin falls, Flash and recast. Slow and Paralyze also help, and if you're subbing BLM, Ice Spikes is nice. Also, on /RDM or /BLM, Blind can help quite nicely, as Rappa said. And if you have RDM to at least 33, Phalanx is GODLY, especially with capped enhancing skill. <.<;

Usuall rdm or blm sub for me. Subbing nin typically isn't worth the time, because if the mob is actually going to be hitting you hard enough for you to want to blink tank it, your shadows are going to go down super fast anyway due to whm having one of the lowest evasion skills in the game. You can kill more things this way, but it takes a long time.

I'm a fan of whm/pld personally. Auto-refresh, sheild bash, shield mastery, sentinel etc are nice. I've solo'd a few EP with this set up and if I am solo camping NMs this is usually the combo I go out with. You can also parry with this job combo which is much lol... I parry with a hammer rawr!!! I think it's all situational :3, plus the more shield skill ups are always a nice bonus.

Try your hand at soloing some colibris first. They're pretty easy to kill with any subs, and the fact that you have WHM main means at the very worst you can run away and Benediction yourself if it goes west.

I wholly endorse subbing NIN, if it's even half as good as it is for RDM/NIN then you'll have no problems taking on even match or higher with a bit of practice.

Gear wise, snipers (or alternatives, such as woodsmans or shikaree if you feel like wasting a few hundred hours of your life) a life belt, wahlahara (sp) turban and blessed gear will be a very handy setup, with bucket loads of haste and the spell you'll be ripping your way through mobs in no time. It's worth investing in a decent weapon too, I'd suggest the pair of Pirate cudgels (if you're going WHM/NIN) or a Purgatory mace and a Genbu's shield (or the ToAU one with accuracy or any number of other shields, being a WHM you're blessed with quite an array of shields.)

Don't be scared to skill up, it's really not as bad and tiresome as it gets a rep for if you load up on accuracy (or even just bring some sushi with you, the more you hit the more likely you are to get a skillup from it) and something to do in real life (magazines, books, films or television really pass the time in skillup parties)

Whm/nin can apparently tank steelshells very well. I won't try it until I'm 74+ but Eliott, a handicapped gimp-ass taru lozor, tanked these like a champ with a nameless random rdm around for Refresh. So skillups should be easy enough to come by if you can find a Refresh wench.

Oh, to add to the benefits of whm/rdm... Dispel and Fast Cast. Forgot to mention those earlier.

Depends on what you're soloing. EP mobs you should probably be able to get away with RDM or even BLM sub, but I wouldn't recommend trying anything high DC, EM, or tougher without ninja sub. WHM tends to take so much damage per hit that shadows help a -ton-.

Don't let its hideously disfiguired appearance deceive you, Degenerate man-whore speaks truth.

WHM/NIN can tank things quite easily, although I do admit that my nameless RDM friend was quite restrained with the omgpwnage on le crabs as he was unlocking his dissector (and I was wearing -enm pieces). But with some more thought and gear we make pretty mean tanks. In fact crabs are easy in general, I solo'd the last 7-8 club levels in zee tree on those steelshells, fun times.

All Mage Skill-up parties/solo >>> Melee-omgcanyooocasthasteonmeplzzz(x5) Skill-ups

If you're talking about EP type mobs, it doesn't really matter all that much what you sub. Since you're looking to farm, I would suggest thief. Your standard caster gear will do fine too. Tougher things a pretty much /NIN onry affairs. WHM soloist are far too deliciously squishy and MP-bound to be worrying about sparkly JA's.

It's funny how I explicitly said that subbing Ninja isn't an option right now...yet people go ahead and mention it anyway. Do you people read at all? :-P

I already know the wonders of /nin since y'know, I am a white mage and have been in plenty of parties already. I can see the differences and advantages of the sub. But I was looking for an alternative to /nin for the time being. I don't have any funds to level that job, and I won't for a longish time.

you may want to look into /blu mor

all the currency needed to lv it is patience

it works well for my rdm not just because of extra sword skills

and the killer effects(undead, beast, and lizard) could help depending on what mobs you fight

I do the quick-change trick to eliminate sub jobs all together. I'm fuckin 133t yo

I should have added a quote in my first reply. I was adding to Blabj's input about skilling up, not directly replying to the OP.

Oh the subs I mentioned.../RDM may be even better than before, due to the defense/evasion bonus vs stuff EM and lower in Signet* areas. That + Phalanx = most stuffs gonna hit you for total crap. Not to mention the already-said bonus of Dispel as well as Sleep.

*Just now noticed I put Sanction. Bleh, sorry.
