Who is still playing FFXI?

I got a house to buy and a wedding to pay for... between me and my fiancee we have 4 kids!
Looks like our cult is off to a nice start.

i would start up again if it was like old times ffxi. i dont like this whole abyssea thing or whatever its called. ffxiv was just people PLing to 50, doing speed runs on dungeons, and blm burning garuda... i got bored very fast :(

why are people fighting garuda

Pretty much. Abyssea is basically god-mode FFXI, assuming you have the right atmas and whatnot. Makes leveling pretty much ridiculously easy to boot.

So... If i buy Abyssea, Its god mode level to 99? Or would i need to do missions and that crap

garuda is one of those instanced fights in ffxiv you get good weapons from them. they also have an ifrit fight

There are still limit breaks, but only the 95 break is worth mentioning. The rest are all basically "turn in relatively common item and/or complete relatively trivial task".

The big thing about Abyssea is having someone help you get the Atmas, which are where the real god-mode kicks in. Things like 10mp/tick refresh and whatnot. Most of the people who've been playing during the Abyssea era already have them, after all, but they're not terribly hard to get these days, since the Abyssea content is comparatively low-level. The stuff that used to take full alliances can now be done with a single party. And the stuff that used to take a party can be soloed or duo'ed lol.

I play again. I quit right before Abyssea came back. I still play Lanien. Yeah, that creepy guy that still browses the site.

I'll help anyone that comes back with whatever. I've helped a couple people that came back recently.

Tyrath plays some too. He plays Arctyrael now. I play his character more than he does for the time being, so it's probably me dual boxing.

About a year ago I got back into the game, started fresh and got NIN, DNC, WHM, BST, THF, and WAR to 99 and fully geared up save for the Empy weapons and then one day, like a mac truck I was helping Fliptout finish off his empy knuckles (I think we fought Duraga like 100 times in a week or so) and I was like, "to hell with this shit, I'm out." I got all nostalgic for it a month ago, reactivated and it just didn't feel right anymore. I played two days and canceled. Safe to say I've had my fun and the game is no longer for me.

Abyssea was a lot of fun getting through, the atmas, quest lines, rep farming and all, but at the end it's just so boring and tedious; fighting the same damn thing over and over just to get a weapon to fight something else over and over... it's just not a good way to leave end-game. I don't mind putting in work to get things done, in fact I prefer it, but fighting the same group of mobs hundreds of times... after the 30th time or so it should be "OK, we get it, you've got what it takes to defeat this guy, that's enough." It may be a bit different if it was at all challenging, but I had a majority hand in getting 3 Empy's and a Relic and was never once challenged, not once. Never even needed to be in a group of more than 2-3 players either, hell, 3 people in a party was a good day.

Hell, when I was just getting through Abyssea, most seasoned players were just dual boxing zone bosses for their Empys. That's what the game has come down to anymore. Now people are soloing Voidwatch and stuff... just no, no thanks.

So i ended up buying it (was 10$ after all), and i'll be on tonight... Can i just start leveling in Abyssea after doing the port J quest to talk to the guy? Or is there much more to it? (Im so oblivious and a newb right now :/)

Pretty sure the bolded sums it up

I came back to Quetz for a while and played with some old friends, then we all got busy and it was too quiet so I went back to FFXIV and then came back to FFXI again, no one was really there the few days I stayed on Quetz again, and I moved to Bismarck server with my FFXIV buddies to keep playing. Once you start playing again, it doesn't take long to get caught up to speed on things. Having a blast so far.

You can, in theory, start immediately, but the problem is that you start with only one stone.

Each stone gives you a half-hour in Abyssea, no more. There are time extensions within Abyssea, however, so if you have someone shouting for, say, a La Theine Worms party, if it's going well and you don't get too unlucky, you'll be able to get extensions considerably faster than you use time, and you'll exit with the maximum time on the clock when you decide to go see how hard it is to do limit breaks, lol.

One of the first things I'd work on are the Abyssites (Key Items) that increase the rate at which you acquire stones. They're also retroactive, amusingly enough, so that when you get one, you immediately get all the stones you would have gotten had you had it from the beginning. Or so I'm told.

Stones accrue every 20 hours and what the fuck am I doing there's a perfectly good explanation of all this crap on the wiki...

The funny part is there's no cap (that I know of) on abyssea stones. If you've started abyssea and quit sometime afterwards, your stones are still accumulating.

I think I've got a couple thousand on Xali.

If that's the case they might as well get rid of them. Especially once the new expansion hits.

About the stones, yes and no.

It's retroactive in a certain way.

If you get your first stone on day 1 and then go get all of the abyssites immediately you aren't going to pop out 500 stones from it. Now, if you're like me and start the Abyssea questline and quit, then come back to like 800+ stones, getting all the abyssite will net you a thousand, maybe more.

tl;dr, it's not gonna give you a ton if you're new but it will certainly help you out no matter what, and should be the first thing you do as a returning player
