Who is still playing FFXI?

If you get your first stone on day 1 and then go get all of the abyssites immediately you aren't going to pop out 500 stones from it. Now, if you're like me and start the Abyssea questline and quit, then come back to like 800+ stones, getting all the abyssite will net you a thousand, maybe more.

That's what I meant to convey, lol. I just forgot to throw in "from the beginning of the time you started the missions."

I'm sure I have a metric fuckton of stones on Raes, even with all the ones I used up until my most recent hiatus. Pity they won't let us trade them, lol.

Where do you farm the abyssites (and can they be solod, if so what lv? mind you i only have bard and blm @75 and smn at 67 :/ )

More info can be found here.

First priority would be either finding someone to help you (I think Tymon offered earlier in the thread) and/or doing a quick experience alliance to get yourself to 80 with a healthy amount of merits and time on the clock.

Once you've got some time on the clock and a few more levels to add to your contribution, you could try going after the Azure Abyssite of Celerity in Abyssea-Konschtat, which is pretty straightforward. Go fight Tonberry Bedevilers and/or Cryptonberry Occultists and it will drop eventually, though you do have to the person who actually claims the mob to get the key item.

Once you've done a few experience alliances, you should have enough Cruor (the Abyssea equivalent of Conquest Points, only more ubiquitous and versatile) to pick up the Ivory Abyssite of Celerity, which will run you 9000 cruor (chump change in the grand scheme of things).

By that time, you should be down to 12 hours per new stone, and that will probably let you stay ahead of your stone usage assuming you don't jump right into getting an Empyrean weapon or something. Empyrean armor sets might eat into that, of course, but if you space out your item farming with other stuff, you should be able to keep ahead of the curve.

The Crimson Abyssite of Celerity would get you down to 8 hours per new stone, but that one is going to require Fame Level 3 in Abyssea-Vunkerl, which can be a time consuming pain in the ass.

In theory, you can "solo" the Ivory (you'll get the cruor just getting your levels pretty quickly), and the Crimson (though the process of getting fame up is fairly time-consuming and might eat more stones than you gain in the short term), but while the Azure is pretty trivial for a 99, if you want to get it before you max out your levels, you'll need someone to do the grunt work for you on that one.

Should I of my bard blm or finish smn, I'm assuming bards are still pretty much amazing in grps?

Bard is still useful last I checked, lol. Probably more so now that they've nerfed Embrava on SCH. BLM can usually get party slots pretty easily for experience and/or Abyssea farming due to the nature of the proc system there.

I came back for a bit. Took THF and WAR to 99. Got burnt out on getting skill ups and not being able to get with anyone for real endgame action. Don't really have time for it now as I have plenty of PS3 games to get through, plus I plan on trying out FFXIV when it's out on PS3.

The community felt like it was missing something compared to back when I originally quit.
I wish they'd give FFXI a 2.0 treatment. I think all the changes it's had could bring the crowd that originally shunned it for being too slow/hard.

hey guys i had a question. im currently downloading the ultimate collection edition (9 hrs of downloading yay...) i have my playonline ID and square enix ID. my question is when i get into the playonline menu do i just go under content ID and reactivate my characters? i tried going under the character reactivation thing on the ffxi website, but its down. am i correct in assuming that if my characters not under the content ID in playonline im screwed and have to start over from scratch? thanks!

I think you have to go in through Square Enix Account Management to reactivate. It's been a while since I've done it though.

Just activated back bitches!!! Anyone got a guild I can join ><

Ujio still gimpin around?

I just wrote up a quick rundown of aby for some returning friends that were lost, maybe this will help someone else:

I know how damn lost I was there when I first started back and information isn't as easily accessable as it once was, so let me try to help you out. I'm sure you guys have already started the very beginning of aby and you have your stones accumulating. You know you get a new one every 20 hours.

*However*

You can get abyssite KIs that shorten that time by 4hrs a piece. There are three of them meaning that once you get them all, you will regenerate a stone every 8 hours

One is bought with cruor: http://www.bg-wiki.com/bg/Ivory_abyssite_of_celerity
One is gotten off a normal tonberry in aby-Konscht: http://www.bg-wiki.com/bg/Azure_abyssite_of_celerity (note, only the claimant gets the aby, not the whole party)
The last is gotten from a quest: http://www.bg-wiki.com/bg/Crimson_abyssite_of_celerity

Along these same lines, these abyssites do different things for you:
Abyssites of Sojourn : Increase the value of each stone by 3 minutes, up to a maximum of 48 minutes/stone : Ivory, Emerald, Indigo, Scarlet, Jade, and Sapphire
Abyssites of Merit : Increases your HP/MP by 10%/5% in Abyssea per Abyssite. : Indigo, Jade, Viridian, Sapphire, Ivory, and Azure.
Abyssites of Furtherance : Increases your base stats by 10 (VIT/STR/DEX/etc.) in Abyssea per Abyssite. : Ivory, Sapphire, and Scarlet.

One of the most important things are the Lunar abyssites. There are three obtainable in total. Each one will allow you to equip an atma everytime you go to aby. So if you have all three, you can equip 3 atmas. One Lunar is purchaseable using cruor, you get a second by clearing your first zone, and the third from your 7th zone win.

The last thing you want to somewhat familiarize yourself with is weakness targetting:
http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/wiki/Weakness_Targeting

That's pretty much a very quick rundown of aby basics. I know I didn't cover it all, but let me know if you have any questions and I will do my best to help!!

Thanks for the info Alanon, just reactivated last night. 3-4 year break and it feels overwhelming once I logged in.
