I don't really have it in me to have a console war so I won't battle the issues. I'll just say for me, it's something I've wanted, and like with the PS2 that I got a launch, there aren't many AAA titles but there are still great last gen games I can plan on it and great games to come. It may have issues but the system comes with a
full 1 year warranty out of the box.
Anywho, I'm to lazy to retype so this is from a blog I posted on my myspace a few hours ago. This is very long:
"So, the infamous Playstation 3 came out today. All around america there was madness. People being shot, robbed, hit, mobs stampeding, and regular everyday folk waiting 1-4 days in front of a store. How did I manage to get mine with all this insanty going on? About a month or so ago a store called Gamestop (or EBgames) held pre-orders. I got off from work, saw a news story, and went to the store to wait. I waited for 5 hours and felt like a total fool, especially considering the second person didn't show up until 30 minutes before the store opened. However it all payed off in the end I suppose. I woke up today, drove to the store, and simply walked in a picked up my system. No hassle, no crowds.
Back to the system. So, I've had a few hours to mess with it now and here are my impressions:
The system is smaller then I expected. All the stories I've heard have spoken about how massive the thing is but it's actually about the same size of a an Xbox 1. Big, but not the monolith I was expecting. The look of the system is nice and it's very shiny. Unfortunatly, it's not at the top of my entertainment center so I can't really see much of it.
Hooking it up was pretty easy, I bought a $8.00 HDMI cable a few days ago so I was kinda worried that the picture would be bad since those kinda cables can go for well over $100 but it works just great as far as I can tell. I'm not overly impressed with the X-media bar menu screen but it works. Setting my system for online play was a breeze for the most part. I simply went into the config menu, selected wireless for my internet connection and the system connected instantly. When I got an Xbox 360, it took me a few days to get everything running properly. Granted, the firmware upgrade I got then for my router probably helped with the PS3 now. Anywho, after like a 30 minute download, I tried to register my Online ID, but I couldn't use my main internet handle because the system doesn't allow spaces....beyond lame.
When that setup was done (13 gigs of harddrive space are gone at this point), I went to the Playstation store. Not too much there, a few demos, movie and game trailers, and a couple of downloadable games. I wanted to download Motorstorm but once a download starts you have to wait for it to finish so I changed my mind and tried out the webbrowser. The picture quality was suprisingly sharp (better then my cheap computer monitor) but navigating the pages was pretty cluncky. A mouse and keyboard are a must (I'm assuming you can use a mouse aswell). Also, for some reason my "good" Logtech keyboard didn't work on the system but my cheap wireless one did...odd. The pages also seemed to load a little slow. I only checked on a few pages, and haven't tried streaming video yet.
So, after playing with it for awhile I'll say it's so-so. The only game I got is Resistence: Fall of Man, it's a first person shooter...I'm not to big on first person shooters. I felt the same way about it that I felt about Gears of War which came out a few weeks ago. It's a good game, one I'll get into after awhile, but nothing all that great. Game seemed solid though but it's never been something I was hyped for so I'm kinda aching to get back to Final Fantasy XII. Problem being I wasn't able to get a memory card reader so I'll have to hook my PS2 back up for that ><.
Blu-Ray didn't impress me. I only popped in X-men 3 and skipped to random parts for like 3 minutes, so, this is a quick first impression. The movie clearly wasn't filmed in High Definition because with Blu-Rays' spiffy high quality picture, the grainnyness of the image jumped out at me. I haven't watched my copy of Talladega Nights yet but I image it's the same way. You can bring up your DVD menu while watching a movie which was kinda cool though. I haven't messed with an HD-DVD drive yet so I can't compare the two."
Since then I've tried playing some on my PS2 games and they all seemed to work fine. Tekken 5 actually looked better on my PS3 but that's probably because the component cables I bought for my PS2 were 10 dollars...Online play seems to work on PS2 games aswell. I downloaded Motorstorm and it does look really good but I don't know if the gameplay is deep enough. I downloaded a few trailers but I haven't watched them yet. I'm very interested in taking videos & pictures from my PC and watching on my HD tv (the 360 does this but not very well) but I don't have a memory stick or SD card so I'll have to wait until payday.
