I was talking to some of my FFXI playing rl buddies, and we ended up talking about a very interesting topic.

Why exactly are you playing FFXI at all? Or over other MMORPGs? Some of my friends had really interesting stories or reasons..

A friend of mine wanted to spend more time with her boyfriend, but respected his love of games. So, she started playing FFXI so she could and ended up being a bigger addict then he because of the high social content of FFXI.

Her boyfriend is a good friend of mine, and he -was- going to play EQ2 or WOW (he didn't have a real reason was going to do a coin flip) until he heard I was playing FFXI. His reason for playing is so every day he can remind me how much I suck compared to him (lmao)

My reason for playinf is lack of interesting MMORPG's when I first heard of FFXI.. I was either playing or have played/betatested/tried all the current MMORPG's and I wanted something new to tackle. (Don't even mention EQ1 and SWG got boring in about a month.) I love S-E games, and thinking of a MMORPG based in the FF world got m pretty interested and excited.

The point is, how did you get hooked on FFXI, what's your story? How did you learn abot the game or decide you wanted to play it, and why are you playing it over the other MMORPG's?

Hmmm....It's Final Fantasy and that's probably the reason I originally got it. I'm a pretty big FF fan and I was very much looking foreward to recognizing things like chocos, moogles, certain jobs, storyline - all things that I find familiure. Combine this with the fact that a lot of my RL friends were getting into the game and we were looking foreward to bringing back the Prarie Bears in full force (originated on PSO Dreamcast).

What keeps me in this game is the social aspect. I don't like PVP, I don't like solo'n and I love being a support character. All aspects that FFXI provides for me quite nicely :D

I first learned about the game reading a magazine. I had never played any FF game so far or even MMORPG for that matter. But I just though it would be fun to give it a try.

I really liked it immediately, but what got my hooked was when I first got introduced to a LS (which is still the one I belong to right now). I had met a few peoples that were more waving buddies then friends, but meeting and interacting with this LS totally changed the way I played and saw the game.

So, as it's been said a lot, it's the people in this game that get my hooked on it.

Aye, one of the best things about this game is the social content. Other games like diablo it was kind of tough because anyone could turn around and kill you, and it was hard to talk to someone because if you pissed them off, they would have their buds chase you done. Games like that people usually go off on about non pvp severs (if the exist) but only newer games like WoW seem to have the seperate PvP type servers going.

It seems we made a discovery of the lifetime!

The 'crack' in FFXI seems to be linkshells(or in other words social content, friends, ect.) Looks like it's also the "broken glass rubbed in your hand then pouring lemon juice + salt on it" if you happen to be surrounded by asses. I'm looking forward to seeing why and how people came to FFXI, and keep on staying. ^^

I first started out years ago playing FF on the NES. I guess i played FF eversince. I was actually sceptical about this game because it was totally different then all the other FF games. (MMORPG) I am officially addicted. I will be in this game probably till they shut off the servers.

this is the only MMORPG i have ever played. i started simply because it was an FF (is there an echo in here?). come to think of if FF is the ONLY RPG i have ever played.

Got to expand your horizens buddy.. To be completly honest from S-E's selection of game, I imo believe Final Fantasy is not their best. Crono Trigger was incredible, but I still to this day believe S-E's best work ever (it's only slightly ahead of FFXI,heh) is Legend of Mana.

Don't let this distract you from the topic and excuse me for getting off topic but this is my tribute to my all time favorite game. If you don't give a damn (I cry long time...) you're done with reading this post.

Legend of Mana - Game of the Gods.

The game had everything. I loved the artwork, the layout system let you make your own world map, the characters you ACTUALLY get to bond with, and learn about, even use them at your side. The stories (yes, the game has no true ending and has I believe 3 major stories) are great, I actually cried at the end of the jewl hunter story. You can be male or female, the game had various weapon types like sword, axe, great axe, pole, great sword (sound familar?) and different "weapon skills" you learned from using the weapons. The gameplay and music was great...

You got various NPC characters helping you out, there were numerous "quests" and secret thingies so event he same areas had a very high reply content. The game had a unique "moves" system were you assigned moves to I think it was O and triangle buttons, things from "Jump" "Hi Jump" which let you jump in combat and hi jump let you jump higher.. you could link these with attacks (Like jump then attack so you end up coming down like a dragoon doing jump), some "moves" even had a special "third" version if you used them together. And by using moves your character gained even more moves like powerslide, feint, I forget the names of most of them. Anyways it was amazing what you could do.

Then of course the ally system, you could have either a pet or a golem at your side. Your pet was a monster from the game who you trained and leveled to be your battle buddy. (I had a dragon, glee. The chocobo got boring) Golems are robots made from items and armor and weapons, that you but together. The items you make them out of determined what abilities it had and it's base stats. You could easily spend hours just making a decent Golem and months making the "perfect" golem.

The crafting system was great too! You could forge your own weapons and armor, and even magic! Best of all you cold name them yourself, and it would show everytime you cast magic. It was soooo cool using magic I named and with custom made weapons. I had this great sword (my preffered weapon) That took me a month to get just right, getting all the items and pumping it up to insane attack power levels witht he right combo of smithing items and synthesis. You could also grow your own veggies and fruits, ect. Items that basicalyl heal you or something, I wasn't big into farming that big treant thing that explained it and told you how your items where doing always scared me O.o.

BEST OF ALL, THE GAME WAS 2 PLAYERS SO YOU COULD DO ALL THIS WITH A FRIEND WITH NO PENALTY!! I remember the fun.. I'd give my bud some nice weapons I made but don't use, we'd go xp and I'd bring along my dragon baby.. or we'd go work on one of the stories together... or duel and test our magic/equipment against each other in the arena... I just wish our pets could fight with us, or that they added a pet fighting arena... my dragon was BUFF. I don't think he liked all the dragon steaks and dragon blood I had tho, lol.

Yes, I am very well aware this sounds a lot like FFXI.. heheh, perhaps that is part of the reason it's so great. I <3 legend of mana to death, and always will.

i'm more of a FPS and fighting genre gamer.
FFXI online is my dirty little secret.

My friend Shinryuken got this game before me and told me how much fun it was. He bugged me about it til I went out and bought it.

I promised myself after PSO that I would not do anymore MMORPGs… I was pretty set until October of 2003 when…

An old PSO friend of mine kept advertising about FFXI. Along with that guy, Armi was also on the FFXI bandwagon and was really trying to recruit people from a Jpop forum to join. With the combination of those two going crazy about how great it was, I went to the game store to check it out.

The guy at the store was already playing and I interviewed the guy for an hour about the game, specifications, whatever. Then I purchased the game and was like… I hope my computer can handle this (the benchmark passed >_>v).

Since this is QCDN, I will skip over the first month… So Armi pages me on AIM about Q server and that her friend was going to be joining us there. I put in the world pass and I was greeted by: “ur name is really long.” Then I spent the rest of the day getting lost in the outpost and all of Armi and friends being massacred by orcs.

I guess it was partially the community that I enjoy on Q and probably one of the few reasons I stay playing.

Always liked FF, chrono trigger, and mario RPG games, just fun games in general like them that gives you memories. I only tried FFXI because it was the FF name, but what can I say, I've been hooked on since oct 2003.

Things I like would have to include

-Linkshell hands down
-Social aspect of the game without question
-I hate soloing
-15 jobs you can CHANGE between! I think this is absolutely awsome you can mingle alot on one character
-SJ system, adds lots of variety.
-FF universe and story: Shadowlord, chocobo, the jobs themselves fit here along with their past FF history, airships, and the whole aura of the game.

I joined FFXI because....well, I saw the preview of it in a magazine and thought it would be cool. I was already pretty addicted to MMO's at that point, but many were text based. So the idea of playing in a 3d world excited me a lot. While I may not like partying all the time, but I do enjoy the social aspects of the game, and sorry Sabia; I wish there was more Pvp involved. I think it adds an aspect to the game like no other. Now, don't get me wrong, it shouldn't just be random killing everywhere, it wouldn't be fair. I'm thinking something along hte lines of like a flag you can put up to pvp, put down when you don't want to. Like a LFG flag sorta.

Anyway....yeah, FFXI has dominated my life, and I don't see myself participating in any other online games for a while. I might try CoH, maybe WoW, but I think I'll always end up back on FFXI lol.

I started playing this game because it was a Final Fantasy game, and squenix had very rarely let me down. Only times they have let me down was Final Fantasy 8 and the Saga Frontier series.

The social aspect is the main draw now though. I've got friends who play WoW who say that they can go a whole day without talking to others, or dealing with others if they want to. To me, that defeats the purpose of making the game online. If you solo everything, then why bother to get a multiplayer game and pay for ti every month?

I also love the multiple jobs on one character aspect. From what I heard about other MMO's, there was little variation between races when it came to jobs, since you got 1 job per character. In perspective, everyone would be a taru mage/brd, mithra rng/thf, etc. That takes a lot of the draw out of the game, since everyone wanted to be the best at their job, and so of course, they picked the best race for it. Plus in XI, i dont have to remember 10 names for one person.

Oh, and Sanjo Renomitsu, I'm sorry but you're wrong. Clearly the best game ever was Secret of Mana (seiken densetsu 2).

Well, before FFXI, I was a pothead. I'd smoke before school, after school, hell sometimes even during school damn near every day. I remember liking the previous Final Fantasy(ies?) and I saw this game at the local Gamestop. Bought it, played it, and I haven't rolled a fatty since. I do get a bit nostalgic everytime I see some Gyshal Greens though ._.

I started playing this game like most ppl here cause of the two FFs in the name. At first I HATED this game. I hated the lvling system, I hated soloing and everything. Of course I was only lvl 4 and in east sarabanatu the whole time^^

it wasnt until I meet Umali (I miss you ; ;) that things became so much fun^^ I dont remember if he had a SJ, but we Pted from 4 to 8^^ duo^^ I loved it. he was soo cool. Probably what was THE higlight so far of my FFXi career (only thing that can pesonally top it is getting my RDM AF HAT^^) was when we attempted mission on in Windy. We went to the ruins,, and we explored every crook and crany of that place trying to find out what the hell we needed to do^^ We had no LS at this time so we only had each other. We spent about 3 days (3-4 hours each day) randamly kiling everymob we could kill inside the ruins. Then we gave up^^ and like true newbies attempted the long journey to Jeuno (which at that time: Nov 2003) was a HUGE and FAR AWAY magical place. we had no idea where to go, but we tried it anyway and ended up near Mhara with sheer luck^^ buttt then he had some personal problems and count play nymore ; ; Umali if your out there I miss yu buddy^^ My first real online friend^^ /bow

My love wanted to get the game.. And I love the Squaresoft games.. but wasn't too keen on the idea of paying monthly. Shortly after my love was telling me about it and such I decided to give it and see how I enjoyed it ^^ and well.. I'm still playing

I started playing partly because I like Final Fantasy, and partly because I liked PSO. Unlike Chpal, I couldn't get enough of the game when I first started. The world was absolutely enormous, and the possibilities were endless. Or so I thought the possibilities were endless. I didn't start losing faith in FFXI untill the realities of the subjob system, and how "cookie cutter" other players forced you to be, had set in. I was pretty mad that people had taken every opportunity to abolish every creative thought from a system of near infinite possibilities. I turned 18 and thought I had hundreds of different ways I could mold my character, and was pretty let down to find I only had a handful. Still, after I accepted that, the game once again became enormous fun and still is to this day. Oddly enough, my own character has always been and always wanted to be a whm/blm or blm/whm - which is in fact accepted and cookie cutter, so I was only mad at the principle of the matter, as I am with summoner treatment and other artificially imposed rules on gameplay.

I like it for the battle engine. It's entirely geared around a group of six people combining and augmenting each other's abilities to kill something that would school them by themselves.

Skillchains, buff and debuffs, hate management, passive stats and special abilities... got anyhting that can match the battle engine of this game?

Then there is the community aspect, the BCNMs, garrison, ballista, the quests with good stories! *Think Dragoon/Ninja.*

While I enjoy a lot about the game from it's quests, events, beauty, and massiveness, the party system is the topper for me.

In all honesty, what kind of game makes being in a party THIS fun?

Although, I'd play another few weeks just to make some motion gifs of bomb toss flubs... ya got to love goblins.
