Why is the PS3 a fail?

4 years? O.o it would prolly be more than that.. though then again.. it does seem technology is improving faster and faster so maybe you are right.. I dunno.. I'd say around 7ish seems more likely.

Generations last roughly 5 years. It's been a little over a year since this one officially started.

Just because a generation has started doesn't mean the last one is dead, though. There hasn't been a new Gameboy since the initial GBA, and games are still being made for it.

Remember kiddies, the DS is not the Gameboys official successor.

However, a life span of 10 years is just unreasonable. The only reason PS2 games are still in devlopment and production is because the market of the PS3 just isn't large enough for the complete leap.

This generation is going to stick around until media can start to be phased out however until there's a big boom in hard drive space and ethernet speeds that's not going to happen as fast as Microsoft wants.

Ah, why isn't the DS the official Gameboy successor? :P it can play all the Gameboy games like the others before it can't it? o.o

And even so didn't the PS2 come out in like... 2000? 1999? something like that. So it is like 6-7 years.

Oh that's right.. it was 2005 :P was thinking it was 2006 when it came out.. damn years..

The generation will only change when there's a change in technology into somthing completely different, a la quantum computer or somthing equaly revolutionary. The reason being that all 3 consoles can be updated without having to be physicaly replaced, thus extending thier lifespan.
The only issue will actualy be for Microsoft because of DVD, because 3 years from now it really will become a heavy limitation. And they'll probably just get around that by going with a Blu-Ray add on and making it relatively cheep, and make a switch over to Blu-ray discs. But thats years down the road.

And i see Nintendo putting out a new console far sooner than 4 years. My money's on 2. Same console almost, but with more powerfull processor and grapics card. Probably even keep the same controler.

Also, some games dont support 1080p, and output 720p regardless of settings. I know flOw and Blast Factor are both 1080p and i can see a big difference between 720p and 1080p (62" Plasma at my friends)

and how can we sit and believe a blue ray disk is the future? lets be honest... the future is sitting in your living room, and clicking whatever movie you want to download. HD or not, actually going to a store and purchasing a piece of plastic that will scratch at some point is not the future. Blue ray is more of just chilling in the present, Not that DVD9 is a future move either. But MS is more into Download content and mediacenter, which if you think is more of a future move. They are limited now like fire said by Banwith on home internets and HD space.

Problem is that DVD9 is not going to be enough until media can be phased out. The PS3 is a long-term investment by Sony, just consider the loss they take on every machine. The 360 is all about short term market share gain, which was achieved, but Xbox 360 is going to need to update in 3 years minimum to get a better disc drive and the PS3 is going to stay around until halfway into that new console's life when physical media is finally able to get phased out.

Just dropping physical media brings the cost of a new machine down so greatly... the cost of distributing games down greatly, making good games cheaper to make as a result.

The next Sony and Nintendo console are set on that cycle. The PS3 has been future proofed to last that long, and the Wii is going to be successful enough to not require an upgrade... the Xbox 360 has serious design flaws and too small a drive for what it's trying to do.

In a few years they'll come out with a new system that'll be bursting with tons of power, come with a blu-ray drive for games and overpower the PS3 dramatically. Problem is that it'll be a few years early and Sony will respond years later with the PS4 that's even more powerful and has no physical media - the entire price put into making it powerful.

Fire and the cycle continues... this iswhat we want. How can we bash either ps3(for making a system that won't reach optimal status till 4 years after launch) or 360(which will be overthrown by new xbox 4 years after launch). Either is a waste of money for the moment, but for me I play more on 360 which is prime for our current technology advantages and gaming situation. Where sure ps3 will last 8years... only shining with breakthrough technology using blueray for 4 of them lol. Atm seems ps3 uses systems to milk far into the next gen cycle(as ps2 is atm) and ps3 will when X360'2 well call it atm comes out. As we see so far MS drops old console like xbox1 to make 360 shine... sales will tell you it didn't hurt. And your last post is only off in one situation, it will be MS the software king to go all media console 1st. Sonys flaw is making a HDdvd player, that can show potential for future years so popular. If anything they have slowed the progress of media centers by introducing a new disk.. I don't want disks;;

Also where are you from in CT fire!? I'm in Stamford, CT! Oh what a wonderfull place! Not..

I want discs until we're ready to drop media and we're not yet by far. For example my university gives us a download limit of 8 gig per week. That means if I want to download a full DVD9... I can't, and let's not even talk about trying to download games not constrained to the DVD9s sizes. The problem is that the internet even in first world countries isn't good enough to support an en entire console without any discs yet. The PS3 and the Wii seem to be the only guys with a long term strategy here. Microsoft is going to make their new console in 4 years, we agree on that, but they won't be able to drop a disc drive then, it's too early. PS3 is ready for the future and Wii has no need for high def discs.

I live in Ridgefield but I go to Uconn Storrs. I went to Uconn in Stamford last year, you guys need to learn how to drive.

I'm not reading everything, but just because Time Magazine said it was a fail, doesn't mean it was a fail. Wii was just so much more succesful in the beggining, but wait till the good shit comes out.

Yeah, PS3 will do better once good games actually come out, but if they take too long no one will care.

exactly, if they get pushed back too much people might go "AW FUCK IT!" and go for another game system. I believe MGS 4 was pushed back. I know that Assassin's Creed has been pushed back -_- so many good games it seems we could have now if they came out on time :P ah well. That's the gaming world.

What exclusives will the PS3 have? All they seem to be putting out is Cross-platform games, and games already out for 360; or going to be out.

PS3
===
FFXIII
FFXIII: Versus
Resistance: Fall of Man
Resistance 2
Little Big Planet
LAIR
Warhawk
Ninja Gaiden Sigma
Metal Gear Solid 4
White Knight Story
God of War 3
Heavenly Sword

are all exclusives (now God of War 3 is not really confirmed but it seems it's coming as I'm told GoW 2 had a rather open ending and the company themselves had hinted at it). Resistance 2 I believe was even confirmed by the company that they have it planned, I believe. I might be missing others but those are ones I'd be interested in :P

Multiplatform
=============
GTA IV (PS3 and 360)
Armored Core IV (PS3 and 360)
Assassin's Creed (PS3 and 360)
Devil May Cry 4 (PS3 and 360)
Mercenaries 2 (PS3 and 360)
Spider Man 3 (All)
Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (PS3 and 360)
Army of Two (PS3 and 360)
The Darkness (PS3 and 36)
Unreal Tournament III (PS3 and 360)

There are multiplatform games (all generally popular). So it's not like it won't have anything. It just.. lacks enough now (that's not to say 360 and Wii don't have their own list of exclusives that interest me :P)

God of War 3 has not been confirmed, but a God of War in 1080P has been confirmed... I assume it's not the PSP version they're talking about.

Also a few other exclusives in the works.

MLB: The Show 07 - on PS2 and PSP but only PS3 for 7th gen version.
There's also...

Motorstorm
Gran Turismo 5
Formula 1 championship edition
Killzone 2
A new twisted metal in the works
Tekken 6
Hot shots golf 5
Singstar
Brave Arms
Chain Limit
Second Season 1
Gundam Musou
Ratchet and Clank
Uncharted: Drake's Fortune
Monster Kingdom
Eight days
The Getaway 3
....

and some titles not worth mentioning, cause they're either crap like Genji or they're like Afrika or Heavy Rain and I don't know what the hell they actually are.

I actualy want to know what Afrika is. It looks AMAZING, but no idea what the actual game is.

I forgot about Monster Kingdom :P ya that game looks fun. And then there's Monster Hunter which looks to be amusing. Gundam Musou is the Dynasty Warriors meets Gundam one right? That looks FREAKIN AMAZING (but they haven't confirmed a US release so I left it off for now..). I really need to look up these games that you listed :P

A new twisted metal in the works (didn't know they were gonna make a new one but I shoulda figured as much)
Brave Arms (I've seen pictures and such but still need to learn more)
Chain Limit (ditto)
Second Season 1 (ditto)
Uncharted: Drake's Fortune
Eight days
The Getaway 3

Other ones I know what they are and I'm not too interested in, myself :P (fighters, racers, and such). And what is Afrika? O.o
