Window 7 Released

Generally if your school remains under the student licensing program, each CD or DVD of software is $30. Only downfall is every student using a particular program uses the same key for that program.

I've been using Windows 7 RTM for about 6 weeks now and I LOVE it, and like others I HATED Vista. I Think this is going to turn Vista into the next ME. I use it on my office PC for work and on one of my home PCs. WMC is fricken awesome and a huge leap over VMC.

As for installing, you do not necessarily have to format anymore. It's not like the old 'upgrade' where it overwrote the Windows directory. This moves the windows directory and writes a new one, giving you essentially a fresh install of Windows while making it easy to import favorites and PST files from the old install.

Installation time is basically nothing. I was amazed at how quick it went on my office pc, so I timed it at home. 17 mins from the time I booted to the install disc to the time it was ready to be used, including getting the drivers installed. That's the real time saver, there is no hours spent looking for drivers, it finds almost all on install. I only had one device not found. You know how in the past you'd go to the device manager and have it look for a driver on the internet but it never found anything? It actually works in Win 7...

So is there anything special I need to do to make it so I don't have to format?

Nothing to worry about if you're upgrading from Vista Win7inst will set your data aside and perform an upgrade without "patching" your old setup.

Only downfall is it takes forever, pending on how much data you're migrating.

Window 7 had been released! Who gonna get it?

My order shipped, when i order vista, it came with free upgrade coupon to window 7.

Does anyone know if you install upgrade from vista to window 7, do you need to reformat everything? or the upgrade won't harm the program and driver itself?

I've had it a few months, but have yet to install it at home, too lazy to backup my system. Been using it at work for awhile.

Run the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor on your computer. It will tell you ahead of time what drivers and applications will have problems.

I would be getting it, but Toshiba's website says I just qualify for the 32 bit version. Blergh.

Wow, for some reason I thought Windows 7 has been out for forever--it's only now being released?

All I hear is good things about it. I have a new laptop on the way that's gonna include it, I'm happy 'bout that.

There was the public beta around February/March; and the RC came out June-ish. This is the actual retail release.

yeah i got that windows 7 test thing to get it for 10 bucks, but i was too lazy and never did it. Glad i didnt waste my time haha.

Ordered mine through the student upgrade program and got professional for $30 bucks. Disc should be on the way today. :)

College students can also get a Windows 7 Home Premium or Professional upgrade for $30.00 USD even if their school has not opted for the student license in their campus agreement. For Professional on the orders page click the check box that you need to connect to a domain network.

The general public release of the final version was yesterday. Volume License, MSDN and Technet subscribers got the final releases release back at the start of August.

The online school offer from win741 still matches your key to the university license.

On a side note: my company has a partnership offer, if we get enough people who are interested in the retail release, I can get a volume discount totaling $1000 or more with a 50% discount, if you include 1 person who purchases win08r2, I have that covered, (doubt it'll happen here, just throwing it out).

The university I work for does not have the student license option in our campus agreement, but Microsoft is still accepting orders from our students. Actually one of my employees ordered a copy today and it went though using his staff email address. They emailed him an individual key.

Try to order another one under the same domain, I think you'll get the same serial. Or at least an individual serial key that's linked to some master list. That's how all Microsoft Enterprise Agreements work for Education Enterprises, not business Enterprises. If your institution isn't under contract, Microsoft may have just sold one based on a .edu domain and entered the record somewhere on their database. Maybe Microsoft is more lenient now as far as updates go, eg. if you have a EEC version of XP Pro or anything for that matter, you would not qualify for win updates.

For Win7 serials, it might be different, but from what I've seen at ours, including all EEC titles, they're all the same.

Anyone here already upgrade vista to window 7 without clean install?

My Window 7 Home Premium just arrived, but i'm afraid to upgrade to window 7 XD, and later having some problems with it, and i don't wanna do a clean install >.> alot of file to backup >.<

Go to Target, pick up an external drive.

Use it, back up your stuff. When you're done return it. People at Target are too retarded to know otherwise, even if you tell them "The HD didn't work with my lix machine".

Edit: Low level that sucker multiple times if you do that, "in case" someone decides to do a restoration on a "new" drive.

I get it for free through school :) but need to get my computer working again XD

just got it, toke overnight to install/remove old os/updates/disk check/defrag/customize/regedit/selective boot/driver updates ect ect...

im not sure if going to classic settings would make browsing my computer simpiler, but aside from a lil confusing from the start, it's quick.
