Window 7 Released

i live in a college town. the school here is michigan tech. they have windows 7 on the schools server for all student to download for free. its the 30 day upgrade that is downloaded. the students have the ability to request a key.(which is also free to them).
so, needless to say, im getting a copy...free

Microsoft will be offering Office 2010 for free online as well, to combat Google Docs (with a similar toned down version). The days of visualization and computing are going to change the way we view these things forever. This is just the beginning of it.

Course they are getting profit. The reason so many are getting for free are because they are students/work and those institutions are paying Microsoft a flat rate for that :P Microsoft might be asshats that make terribad products on average but they aren't stupid (far as I can tell they make terribad products cause they know they can and make their users test for them xD).

OH I'm curious, what's the difference between Windows 7 Professional English (x64) vs Windows 7 Professional English (x86)? :P

One is a 64-bit operating system, the other is a 32-bit OS.

Did it really call for a tongue-stuck-out? Because I don't think it called for a tongue-stuck-out.

Then why didn't they just CALL them 32bit and 64 bit? >.> furthermore I'm confused which is the 64 bit and which is the 32 bit then >.> I'd imagine the x64 is 64 bit but... bah stupid naming

Because of the naming schemes for architecture. x86 is 32-bit architecture. 286/386/486/Pentium - also known as 586.

I said that......... you just made it sound smarter.. Damn j00

One can see more than 4 gigs of ram the other cant.......

Installing this tonight BTW, hopefully I can do the whole, not having to downloading ffxi updates like I can with Winxp

Common misnomer.

Certain 32-bit OSes were designed, soft coded to support a maximum of 4GBs of memory. Your system, depending on how much hardware you have will decrease from the system's reported amount due to firmware required by your hardware. It is not a x86/32bit processor/hardware limitation.

This is why when concerning common Microsoft OSes; XP, Vista and Win2kServer+ it is a matter of altering the OS to see more than 2GB and 4GB of memory. All limitations are made by the developer.

Aye, however keep in mind it isn't recommended because most 32-bit applications made for Windows, were designed to work with a kernel that addresses only 4GB Maximum of memory. To get the full benefit, with minimal run-time errors just use the 64bit version of Windows, but this only deals with Windows and other 32-bit operating systems that naively includes the 4GB memory limitation.

We use PAE on a lot of servers that host virtual clients because each virtual machine is unaltered and thinks the individual kernel is 4GB max. And the host machine (server) handles the addressing coming from the virtualization server (software).

If you know your 32-bit program is designed to run on machines with more than 4GB of memory (eg. Exchange 2003+), then you'll see little to no problems using PAE in Windows/x86.

i cannot for the life of me find my build number for windows....

anyone try out FFXI with Windows 7 yet? I'm curious if it's more friendly with Windows 7 than Vista..ran slow as balls on Vista for me and I pass all the recommendations SE put on their site ><

I've been using FFXI with windows 7 since March; it works as well as XP/Vista. You'll need to download the vista POL, but other than that there's nothing special required.

Been using Windows 7 Pro. Things are nice...downloaded a few themes and other things....Windower has some issues but they have a fix for it. Some of the security updates broke it so I had to roll back the system and customize the update now everything is working till they have a fix that can work around the updates.

only issue i had with windower was the hook.dll, but i still have to have IE8 open when logging on for ffxi to open, minor problem.
