So after my afternoon drink...I was browsing ffxi dats for new additions.

And I came across this thread:

http://www.ffxidats.com/forums.php?m=posts&q=4241&n=last#bottom

for all those who are having problems with windows vista being compatible with ffxi, I might recommend the unofficial patch. Sorry if this is a double post, but I thought it might be useful for those who are going through their mmo withdrawl

Good Luck ^_^

I couldnt get FFXI to work after I got it installed onto my new Comp with Vista. The way I corrected it was by replaced the Playonlineviewer folder with a fully updated one from my old comp.

Is it just me or does vista seem like a total failure?

Well, it's not so much Vista's fault, in my opinion. It's more the fault of the softward and hardware companies that knew Vista was going to be released and just never updated/patched their software before Vista's launch. They've had several years to play with Vista.

Yeah, the biggest problem with Vista is driver support.

Wonder what became of that NERD RAGE lawsuit against nvidia for not providing stable Vista drivers when it was released.

Personally, I'd say Vista is bombing. XP had some similar issues at the start but they were resolved quickly.

SP1 will be out in the coming months or so already, Until then im not using it because half the drivers i want to install wont work...nvidia...AMD Cpu....my motherboard...nothing.
Hell i cant even play lineage 2 on it. Annoying.

I don't think Vista is bombing. It's the only thing you can get on new computers in most retail stores, so it's definitely spreading quickly. People that already have computers with XP are the ones that are taking their time with adopting the new software.

Like me. But I have always built custom, so if I made a new computer I'd most definitely get another copy of XP for it. No questions.

I reformatted my computer with Windows Vista Ultimate, 64bit edition last Saturday, and not being able to play XI was frustrating. A friend of mine pointed out this patch to me today, and it worked for me. POL and FFXI still installed rather clunkily, for example, the initial POL menu before you get the first POL update had no text what-so-ever, so I had to go by memory/intuition to navigate, but after the first POL update text was added. Then I had to explore the install CD's for the separate FFXI setups for XI and the 3 expansions, since the disc wouldn't do them automatically and no window popped up to prompt for such. Still, when all is said and done, XI works now, and it didn't before. I'm happy.

Honestly, I'm liking Vista. Biggest problems I've had, which have been said before, are mainly the other companies not acting fast enough to get their stuff out on time. Or if it's out on time, it's really crappy software/drivers (Logitech's SetPoint 3.3 comes to mind).

And then SE being lazy and going "We know there are problems, and we'll have a solution around the time Vista comes out, but really, we're just saying that to shut you up. 2008 anyone?"

I think, since POL is a free service, that they should have an XP/Vista compatible .exe available for download of JUST the PlayOnline Viewer in its newest version that's Vista ready. That way Vista users can just download the fairly small file, and get a POL Viewer that works right, unlike when I copied over the directory, and none of my settings will save. I sent them a suggestion email, but I doubt they'll listen. I'll check out this patch. I'm tired of the auto-logout and language filter turning itself back to default at random times.

Edit: Question to anyone who has used this. Do your settings stay the same if you change them? I know when I copied over my directory, none of my settings in PlayOnline itself would save. Stored passwords, backgrounds, nothing. I might try it myself anyway, but I'm just curious of everyone else.
