Spoiler:
News video:A Boca Raton couple who paid $155,000 to clone a deceased pet are feeling the spotlight of national media while helping the puppy adjust to his new family.

Sir Lancelot Encore spent his first Florida night in the master bedroom -- along with nine other dogs, various cats and two humans -- oblivious to the sensation he had caused earlier Monday.

The 10-week-old golden Labrador retriever is a clone, created in South Korea by a California biotech firm from the DNA of the first Sir Lancelot, the beloved pet of Ed and Nina Otto of Boca Raton.

The original ''Lancy'' died, at age 11, in January 2008.

A celebrity from the moment he bounded off an American Airlines flight Monday night at Miami International Airport, Lancy redux ''very quickly integrated into the menagerie and held his own,'' said Lou Hawthorne, CEO of BioArts, the firm that auctioned off five dog-cloning procedures last July.

The Ottos spent $155,000 to win the second-round auction.

''He's a spunky little critter,'' Hawthorne said. ``He was nipping and stealing things.''

By Tuesday morning, Regis and Kelly and the BBC were clamoring for the inquisitive, 17-pound bundle of energy. The Ottos say he is the first single-birth, commercially cloned puppy in the United States.

They already have a lot of dogs: Roxanne, Scarlett and Cadbury -- the yellow Labradors -- Henry, Hayley, Cassidy and Oliver -- the Cavalier King Charles spaniels -- Zoe the bichon frisé and Cartier, the teacup Yorkie.

They also have 10 cats, six sheep and four parrots. But with 12 acres in West Boca, there's always room for one more. So when the chance came to duplicate Lancelot, there was no hesitation.

He was just special, said Nina Otto, 66.

''He was a human dog,'' said Ed, 79. 'He read your emotions. He knew when to be with you and when to leave you alone. And he was the `crew chief' '' of the dog population, keeping everyone in line.

``He could understand English and read hand signals.''

Ed Otto calls himself a ''serial entrepreneur.'' His father, the late Edward Otto, cofounded both NASCAR and the Orange Bowl where, in the 1930s, he staged motorcycle races.

Money wasn't an issue when they heard about the auction. Indeed, the Ottos had cryogenically banked DNA samples from their beloved Lancelot five years earlier, hoping that some day they would be able to do what they finally did.

BioArts teamed with Dr. Hwang Woo-suk, a scientist with South Korea's Sooam Biotech Research Foundation, to produce the dog.

Hwang, a controversial figure, lost his research professorship at Seoul National University in 2004 after fraudulently claiming he had cloned human embryos and stem cells.

He was, however, involved in creating an Afghan hound clone the next year.

To create Lancelot Encore, Woo-suk took an egg from what Hawthorne called ''an indigenous Korean dog'' resembling a bloodhound, replaced the egg's innards with the late Lancelot's DNA, then implanted the egg in a second Korean dog.

The procedure failed once, then succeeded, Hawthorne said. Two months later, Lancelot Encore was born, weighing 1.3 pounds.

The Ottos are certain he is the real deal. They say they trust Hawthorne, whom they have known for several years, since he ran a BioArts predecessor called Genetic Savings & Clone.

Were there any doubt, Nina Otto said, ``we could have [the puppy's] DNA checked. But I believe in people.''

The Humane Society of the United States lambastes pet cloning as ``fraught with animal suffering and false promises . . . There is no replacing a beloved companion.''

They way they say Lancelot sound like Ocelot if you don't pay attention lol

Add in bonus Funny JP prank XD, if you laugh, you owe me 500G!

No, I wouldn't pay $155k to clone a dog. You could go down to a shelter and adopt a new one for a tiny fraction of that. For that kind of cash, you could adopt the entire shelter.

More power to those cracked old folks with that kind of money to throw around, but it's hardly the same dog. If we ever get cloning technology to the point where we can grow gholas, it might be a different story. Since that's never going to happen, I just shake my head in disbelief. Their cloned dog will probably outlive them.

Some people have more money than sense.

No. I would (as Hali said) go adopt a puppy from a shelter.

That summed up everything I was thinking... >_>

No, I'd never clone my dogs. My dogs aren't coming back, and even if I did clone them, it'd only be more painful when they die again. I was hurt for weeks when my two dogs died, I don't want such a thing to happen again.

Pretty much what Hali said. Even though looks identical to your old dog, it isn't your old dog. It doesn't have the experiences the original had, and thats why you loved them.

If I was ever going to get a dog I'd get one from a Shelter. That is a pretty big IF tho. Don't really like the idea of domestic pets >_>;;

I know if I had $155k cloning one of my dead pets would not be on the top of things to buy list. People are free to spend their money as they seem fit but I wouldn't do it. Like others said, it would be different and wouldn't be my old pet. There's dogs of the same breed at many shelters that I could adopt if I wanted one. Especially with the economy the way it is people are dumping so many, many pets in shelters. I'd rather save a life than recreate an old one.

Well, if you don't wanna go threw the pain of losing a dog, then you might as well never get anymore pets, the dogs death is a part of dog ownership whether they are cloned or not.

2 of my dogs have died in the past year, it hurts, alot especially when you've had one since you were a little kid. But I'd never let that pain keep me from ever owning a dog again, the joy you get during the time they are alive far outweigh the pain of their death. But as far as dog cloning goes, yeah i agree deff not for me. there plenty of dogs out there in need of a home already.

My dog maggie,

my parents got her when i was like 8 she died last year at the age of 14. I still feel a lump in my throat whenever i think about her, but then i feel happy when i remember all the great times i had with her when i was a kid.

then my cat murphy. the brown one curled up with the black and white one(sox)
He died last year to, Grumpiest cat you'd EVER meet, really he hated everyone but my stepdad, i still miss him tho. he used to have the most EPIC fights with the dogs

Maybe so. My point is, it really hurt when I saw my dogs die, if I cloned them, it'd only open an even greater wound seeing them die a second time. Why go through the same pain twice for a pet that has passed away once already?

A cloned dog isn't the same dog that passed on. It'd be like taking a black lab puppy from the same litter as your black lab puppy. Honestly it's going to look the same but with different experiences growing up it's not going to be the same. With so many dogs in shelters and adoption groups why would you want to contribute to the problem of pet overpopulation? I don't even understand people who let their dogs have puppies or make more mutts like "Labradoodles" - it's not a designer breed, it's a mutt (I love mutts) - don't pay $500 to the person for a mutt who in turn is going to breed more mutts when there are thousands of perfectly good adoptable mutts and purebreds put down in shelters everyday.

Oy....being in dog rescue I get a little over-passionate about this but it drives me insane!

Edited to add: With every cloned dog they have many, many failed clones who either die in the womb or die from birth defects while trying to produce one healthy clone. It's sad - but many more of your "Fluffy's" died to make one reasonably healthy one - not even going to bring up the stress that the surrogate mothers go through and what happens to them after....

$155K would buy a lot of Chineese food....

The 155,000 helps continue beneficial scientific research. The more practice we get with this relatively new technology, the better. I wouldn't pay 155,000 for a dog clone, but I have no objections to people who do. Science matters. Improving the technology will unlock a host of possible medical cures.

I wouldn't spend $155, let alone 155k...

this makes you wonder why there are starving people on the streets because granny and grandpa had to clone thier mutt. I think the money could have been better spent

some people just value their pets over a human being, can tell by reading that they have bunch more other pets.

This! I took my one dog on a last road trip, because she liked to stick her head out the window. Did I cry? YOU FUCKING RIGHT! Knowing this is the last drive I take with a staple of my last 13 years of life, you god dam right it hurt. Cloning them? Fuck you people. There is only ONE.... 1 .... original of anything. To try to replicate is to piss all over the original copy. Try to play god somewhere else....
