WTF!? Garka mages

all garkas should just lvl drk so they can be emo X2

Meeze plays a WHM and rocks more than 99% of the other WHM we have invited to party.
He had a good teacher.

You see lots of galka mages and taru melees for one reason: It's fun to play against type. My buddy Wulfgar is a galka and he's leveling all the mage jobs lately and having a blast before he tackles Summoner. Can't wait to see him in full RDM AF.
I see your anticipation and raise you a foreshadowing!

Goodluck with that

What part exactly?

Would you rather have a taru blm at level 40 with only half their spells because they're loltooexpensive and no idea what an MB is (which I've had more than once in a party) or a galka blm that knows how to MB and has all their spells and decent gear?

I cry every time I see a galka in a manteel.

A well geared and merit'd elv or galka blm will still only be as good as a 74-75 taru blm with no merits, and avg gear.
With elves vs taru it's a difference of MP and what, 10 INT? 10 INT is nothing to sneeze over, but I'd much rather manaburn with an elf blm that has full elemental magic merits (or a few enfeeb thrown in too) and full ice/thunder potency merits than some dinky 74 or unmerited 75 taru. You can be damn sure the elf is going to know how to properly blow up punk ass puddings instead of doing one e-peen nuke then running around frantically with 200 HP afterwards. I love manaburning with my taru friends, but damn, ya'll are fuckin squishy.

Its fine if any job wants to play any job, but I think his point is how effective a taru blm versus a galka blm with the same merits and gear would compare. If I knew how bad my elv blm would stack up against a taru blm, I would have never lvl'd blm. I don't see a prob with a galka whm or rdm, but blm I still would leave to the hume, mithra, and taru. A well geared and merit'd elv or galka blm will still only be as good as a 74-75 taru blm with no merits, and avg gear.

Thats no weather, no sorcerers ring. I know Crosis has similar numbers, and he's elvaan to. I've yet to see a Taru here show something even close to that. Taru isnt really all that.

C get the hell out of here. You don't count :(

You're in big, big trouble.

I don't think it really matters. When I first started, galka mages miffed me a bit, but now I see its all skill.

Race doesn't matter when it comes to playing your job. Sure as a Taru SMN, I have more MP than god, but I'm usually awful.

Not awful, awful. But still pretty awful.

I was reading this topic and noticed a lot of people saying skill > gear > race. Sorry, but no. There is little to no skill involved in this game. Gear > Race >>> whatever Skill you might need.

You're a melee.

I don't see the problem with that. I can understand the impulse to be the absolute best at the job, but the game would be a hell of a lot more entertaining to people if they'd relax a little and be comfortable with the notion of "just" being pretty damned good.

A statement like that is almost flame bait, because I know there are going to be some people rolling their eyes and saying "Yeah, justify being a gimp," but that's not what I mean. I don't think you should slack off just because you can't match the "proper" race wearing the same gear for a job; I'm just saying you shouldn't care so much.

If I knew how bad my elv blm would stack up against a taru blm, I would have never lvl'd blm.

I'm calling bullshit on this one because Q loved being a nuker and he knows it; "I can't compete with a taru" is not what soured him on the job. Again, doing respectable damage is nothing to be ashamed of. If you enjoy leveling a job, ignore the "I can't compete" crap because you can compete. It takes more effort, but that's part of the fun of the game.

Isn't Zeo elvaan?

If he is, then you guys sucking as a elvaan blm is your own problem. Don't blame your race for your ineffectiveness.

Thats the problem with a lot of people - they strive to be "the best" instead of just settling with "damn good". I sometimes hafto ask if they're serious when they're ashamed of their 600-700 damage WSes at L65 when the average DD's WS at that level only does ~300.

In some cannons I've seen people feel weak because their WSes don't always break 1000 damage. Really, people needto focus less on how good they can be and focus more on how good they're already doing. =/

That's only true if you're doing something that requires little to no skill, i.e. a cannon party. Go solo Ose or Skullnix without using Bind/Sleep Bolt tactics and lemme know how much more race helps than skill.

There's plenty of things in the game that require plenty of skill. Of course it's gonna seem simple when you just take the simple "zerg it" tactic to everything.

Race is much less important than some credit it to be - all RSE balances out the stats that race is somewhat lacking in, thus making the racial difference relatively negligible. RSE won't give a Galka outstanding MP nor will it give a Mithra amazing STR or VIT, but it will set their stats to a decent average. Yeah, a Tarutaru is gonna have more MP than a Galka. And more INT than an Elvaan. But you're really making a mountain out of an anthill if you think that 10str, or 10int, or 100mp, or whatever at L75 is going to make an earth-shattering difference.

Here's a riddle: if race is so important to you, what job makes the best PLD?

QFT

I agree with you and Hali, Mish. Trying to be the best at anything in this game is exhausting and generally out of the realm of possiblility for players that can't devote the time this game requires to be involved in HNM shells etc.

Call me a gimp if you like but I'm okay with just having gear that is likely considered decent bordering on good, certainly not excellent or zomguber. I'm not saying I won't keep trying to improve my gear but I'm not going to feel like a failure if I don't own the absolute best piece for every slot/situation.

I've never agreed with the people who insist that race means nothing in job selection. To go back to an earlier example, that of the Taru vs Elvaan BLM/WHM, it's something like 13 points of INT and over 200 MP difference in favor of the Taru. Comparing the two jobs on DRK, for a new example, is something like 11 points of STR in favor of the Elvaan.

Considering how many perfectionist gear whores are out there who would cream their shorts over an opportunity to have that kind of edge, I think we can conclude that race DOES PLAY A FACTOR in how well you play your job. Like gear, it helps establish the baseline from whence your skill can come into play. All other things being equal, a Taru will always deal more magic damage, an Elvaan will always hit harder in HtH, a Galka will always take less damage per hit, and a Mithra will always hit more often and take fewer hits in return, whilst the Humes get to laugh all the way to the bank with their universally average stats.

I'm not saying that you can't be a good Elvaan/Galka BLM, or a good Taru PLD, or what have you. I'm saying that your baseline for the important stats for your job will be lower, and that there's undoubtedly going to be someone out there playing the same job, with the same gear, on a better race, who will outperform you.

You can keep believing whatever you want to believe, as will I.

But I haven't seen another paladin outperform my tarutaru boy takatin.

And I got wtfpwned as a blm by Zeo (elvaan) as a tarutaru back when I thought I was leet.

I've seen just about every race outperform another race where both characters were pimped out.

To go back to an earlier example, that of the Taru vs Elvaan BLM/WHM, it's something like 13 points of INT and over 200 MP difference in favor of the Taru.
In most cases, I out-MP my own fellow tarutarus by 150ish MP and sorc.ring. Int is jack shit. MP is relatively jack shit. The only thing more mp means is that you're able to stay up longer without resting mp when it comes to endgame. Hell, any race with cooking at 60 can outperform another race without cooking at 60. Just choke down yag drinks every chance you get.

Zeo's hume, but he's still pimp.

Caerloc is Elvaan, and he's pimp as fuck, even if he does always fall asleep.

Skill>>>Gear>>>Race, for mage jobs.
