I bought the wife mage a new HP notebook. Pretty nice. Intel Core 2 Duo running at 2 GHz, 3 GHz RAM, Nvidia 8800 series mobile video card running 256 MB....

And Vista.

I thought the notebook was overpowered to run FFXI without fail. But I failed. DirectX 10 makes the game lag so horribly that you simply cannot play it. I am at a loss. I'd prefer not to spend another $300 dollars on XP, but I know FFXI and Vista are just not friends.

I've attempted to run the game in XP compatibility mode but I'm just not having any luck. Does anyone else have anymore suggestions? It's a beautiful laptop but the wife mage is abnout to throw it out of the window. Help! :(

Run it on linux when all else fails? If possible?

You might try downloading the special Nvidia drivers for FFXI, they're supposed to fix problems with a few cards out there. Other than that I don't know what could be wrong off hand, I don't have any lag/problems running FFXI with Vista.

the way i made FFXI work better on my vista is by altering the priorities and making it play like it was on XP

Windows Vista is worse than Waterworld and the Postman combined.
Yep... Waterworld at least had nudity.

Do you have the Vista POL client? Are you using POL's Windower?

The correct answers are "yes" and "no" respectively. POL's Windower fucked my framerate something fierce.

Unless you're running a 100% Linux or Macintosh environment at home, shut the fuck up; you don't know what you're talking about when it comes to operating systems.

and while you're at it, listen to this man.

When those same idiot consumers start learning how to actually use their shit properly.

people complain about windows a lot, I dunno why... You know, Ive got a double whammy going on... Possibly even a triple.

#1 Im on windows (xp)
#2 My computer is a dell
#3 Its a notebook. E1505

For the past 2 years Ive had little to no problems whatsoever. Problems are almost always user based

lol, come now, you think other companies have the failure and bug rates that Microsoft does? no, they don't. Even small programs like Office have more bugs when the release a new one than free shit like Open Office :\ and then there is apple, granted, no one uses Apple's OS much, but it's usually far less glitchy/buggy than MS' piece of SHIT when it comes out. Why do you all constantly suck the MS cock thinking they have good products upon release? (at least many of you seem to think it) it takes them years usually until they finally are better -_- I didn't even get XP until it was far more stable than when it came out. My father wanted us to have Unix or Linux but mom didn't soo ya.. that kinda settled that >.>

I agree problems are mostly user base but from what I've read (and experienced) MS tends to have more actual glitches/bugs than other OSes I've used (and yes, I have used Linux, Unix, OS X, older Mac OSes etc). I actually do have a Linux box (that my dad and I built from my old computer parts) but I'm just unable to find space in my room to put it down on :|

Seriously though, have you ever compared the OSs when new version comes out to each other? That is, when OS X was released compared to XP, let's say. Which was FAR more glitchy? SURPRISE SURPRISE! it was XP. How about comparing the XBox to PS2 or GameCube? ya, XBox was more (then PS2, then GameCube XD Nintendo makes damn good quality), or 360 to PS3 or Wii (again, same order). And a lot of this shit (overheating and whatnot) seems easy to properly test for. Hell, the latest Microsoft Office was glitchy as fuck, I tried saving (just going to save as) and it had an error and closed at school. I was doing nothing else, no other crap was on (other than some school programs to link to the network and restrict some access for students and the whatnot which worked fine with the older version of Office and works fine when I install Open Office). Why don't people ever admit that MS doesn't properly test their products? It's so obvious when you compare whatever their product is to one of their competitors.

*stuff* I didn't even get XP until it was far more stable than when it came out. *stuff*

Thats why you stay with the second newest OS, lol. We are not sucking off MS's weenie. Its stupidly simple. The only people I hear moan about MS are people that dont know wtf theyre doing, or have done something that screwed their system up and dont want to blame themselves.

Vista is an exception. Everyone knows that OS is bloated. Besides, you NEVER EVER get a new MS OS. Always stick with the second newest. I thought everyone knew that..?

On another note, a computer is a computer... They all nearly do the same thing. Unless you are some sort of engineer, programmer or fanboy, it doesnt matter what OS you have. Unless youre really dumb or something. Or want that whole "mac appeal"

lol, my problem was that some people think a new product from MS is properly tested and shit.. I've yet to see a properly test MS product :| I can accept occasional problems here and there, but I swear, I bet if a study was done to find out which companies had the highest failure rates in their products, Microsoft would most assuredly be up there.

Let me just say that Microsoft piss me off but Apple pisses me off more. As someone who builds his own PCs I should be very familiar with Linux but it's easy enough to just grab a Windows disc, call up India and explain that you are reinstalling windows after your old hard drive died...

But seriously, Windows is the shittier product, but Apples are outrageously overpriced, beyond the point you would rationally decide on an Apple based on the price and what you are getting out of it. Linux has different issues altogether. Can I play Crysis on a Linux machine? Probably not. Will I be able to play Starcraft 2, doubt that.

ya, that is true :| Apple is stupid expensive, windows is rarely ever working for a long ass time, Linux won't play newer games XD it's evil!

This.

go to www.laptopvideo2go.com - go to their forum - download ForceWare 169.17 32-bit version. Grab the driver package and unpack it into a new folder. Take the Modded INF from that same forum page and replace the original INF in the unpacked folder.

Now install that driver.

LIKE MAGIC, you will get good performance in FFXI again! I haven't had a problem with my FFXI performance since I installed that driver, and this is with a fairly similar spec notebook (HP, 2.2GHz Core2 duo, 2GB RAM, and a GeForce 8600M gpu - it's the 512MB one, yours should be the 8400M which will run just as well for XI).

Now quit bitching about the OS - in this case it's nvidia's screwup since ATI's parts DON'T have this performance problem with FFXI + Vista. edit: And the fact that there IS a driver that runs it fine is further evidence of my point that YOU SHOULD QUIT BLAMING VISTA FOR EVERY FUCKING PROBLEM YOU HAVE. GOD.

In fairness of the "stupid customer" they shouldn't be expected to have to scour the internet for drivers. It's Microsoft's responsibility not theirs. Of course there's always solutions for resourceful consumers but the purpose of a platform like windows is to make owning a computer a simple experience that anyone can do. Which includes people who aren't adept technologically. If Microsoft can't provide it then should let go of their choke hold over the PC industry and let someone else do it. They spend more time and resources sabotaging competition than on their own products.

Considering the past 15 years or so, I must say I keep wishing everyone just goes back to Windows 3.1. It ran perfectly fine and is functionally identical to any of the later operating systems. There was no start menu but there was a file manager, and shortcuts divided into group windows. I could exit windows entirely and use the real DOS, as opposed to fake DOS.

In fact the relationship between dos and windows taught me a lot about computers. Playing around with the autoexec startup file for example give me a fundamental understanding of how programs work which led to eventually playing around with Qbasic.

What's funny is that all that really happens is that the OS footprint keeps getting bigger and the interface is more slick. Nothing else to be honest. If I want the same performance with a newer operating system, I need a better computer. So I have to update the computer just to match the operating system and break even. If I put Vista on my PC all my games would run worse, and that's a fact. The performance increases that actually matter, like for example the way windows formats a hardrive, could have easily been updated on 3.1.

Unfortunately Microsoft crams their latest OS in with new computer purchases, and unless it's SO bad people spend additional money to downgrade(which many people are doing with Vista) the train keeps chugging along. The fact is we don't need a new operating system every 3 years, period. We need continuous work to keep the present one a better quality. XP still needed work... it's not finished yet...

a bunch of the usual verbose bullshit.

No, really; you still don't know what the fuck you're talking about. Stop acting like you're a Beta Tester for MS or Mac, and get with the goddamn program. You've consumer whored to MS or Macintosh like *nearly* everyone else if you have ever bought a machine with Windows, an iPod, an Xbox/Xbox360, or any other product that they've so gregariously "rushed out before it's been tested". I have news: the real tests begin on release date, when the public gets to find every freakin' single bug under every conceivable circumstance that Beta Testers don't seem to figure out. It happens in Corporate environments with homebrew software, and it happens in general release with OS releases.

It even happens in World of Warcraft/FFXI/Guild Wars/etc etc.

PROTIP: Your dad did it wrong by trying to force an OS down yours and your mother's throat.

I'm willing to bet that I get more dropped calls (equalling failure of the device to do what the service provider promises to me) than I have failure from my Windows Machine.

We get it. You don't like Microsoft for the popular reasons. MY problem is you don't want to seem to either put up or shut up. If you're feeling so mighty against MS, dust off your Linux box you don't seem to have room for (lulz) and use it instead of your Windows Machine. You'd have room for it then.

Let me just say that Microsoft piss me off but Apple pisses me off more. As someone who builds his own PCs I should be very familiar with Linux but it's easy enough to just grab a Windows disc, call up India and explain that you are reinstalling windows after your old hard drive died...

Linux does have its own difficulties to overcome. Your likelihood in playing Starcraft or Crysis? Possible, and even more probable with programs/implementations like WINE (which with every new version, is getting absolutely more amazing) or Cedega (the non-free WINE fork that requires a fee to use).

I'm glad to see someone gets it though, that each OS has its own shortcomings, and doesn't just tout one as the best thing since sliced bread.

ya, that is true :| Apple is stupid expensive, windows is rarely ever working for a long ass time, Linux won't play newer games XD it's evil!

IF Microsoft="evil"
THEN SET Flame.Microsoft=1

ELSEIF Linux="evil"
THEN Apple="God"

ENDIF
