(O.P's Note: Didn't want to necro the old thread when the movie was announced earlier this year of its release)
Despite my cynical approach to this second X-Files movie, I went and saw it tonight. Unsurprisingly, the theatre was pretty empty on the second night since opening day. However, I did not find it a bad movie.
Thoughts contain spoilers, oh no!
Still..an interesting story, and a hell of a lot better than that travesty Fight the Future.

Spoiler:
On the other hand, I found the plot to be very...well...un-X-Files-ish. In fact, to me, it seemed to run like a two hour episode of CSI, except with Mulder and Scully involved. There was no aliens, no monster of the week, no ghosts, no government cover-up, no real paranomal activity...all these things I have come to expect from the series.
After the movie, I said to my friend, a fellow X-Files fan "It was a good story, but it could have used a vampire" to which she replied, she found the plot to fit into the aspect of X-Files she really liked, which was psychics and deviant human behaviour. I guess what I had failed to remember was that the series dealt with many weird things, and I guess I should be happy that they did not go with their usual Alien invasion/U.F.O plots the series mainly centered around. However, I do wish there would be a third movie; the first movie sated the appetite of the alien lovers, this one- the deviant behaviour and possible proof of psychics and/or existence of God - which leads me to believe that us monster lovers should also get an installment of X-Files on the big screen which deal with that side of X-Files. Of course, I am just a dreamer. After this movie, I really doubt that Chris Carter would produce a third.
Overall, this seemed like it could have been a two episode special of X-Files if the series was not already complete. In fact, there wasn't any reason this should have been on big screen, except it was probably the only route it could have gone. With an ended series, it would not make sense to air it on T.V., and surely the series deserves better than a direct to DVD release.
It may have been a money grab, sure. Or it may have been Carter's last leg for the characters Mulder and Scully and end the speculation that followed the fandom after the finale of its last season, perhaps to give us all insight to what they are up to after the X-Files project was closed by the FBI. Afterall...this really didn't seem like an X-Files case. The link between the case in the movie, and the cases investigated in the series was...well vague. But they were there, and we know what they are now doing, and perhaps...we know what they will be doing in the future.
