(O.P's Note: Didn't want to necro the old thread when the movie was announced earlier this year of its release)

Despite my cynical approach to this second X-Files movie, I went and saw it tonight. Unsurprisingly, the theatre was pretty empty on the second night since opening day. However, I did not find it a bad movie.

Thoughts contain spoilers, oh no!

Spoiler:
On the other hand, I found the plot to be very...well...un-X-Files-ish. In fact, to me, it seemed to run like a two hour episode of CSI, except with Mulder and Scully involved. There was no aliens, no monster of the week, no ghosts, no government cover-up, no real paranomal activity...all these things I have come to expect from the series.

After the movie, I said to my friend, a fellow X-Files fan "It was a good story, but it could have used a vampire" to which she replied, she found the plot to fit into the aspect of X-Files she really liked, which was psychics and deviant human behaviour. I guess what I had failed to remember was that the series dealt with many weird things, and I guess I should be happy that they did not go with their usual Alien invasion/U.F.O plots the series mainly centered around. However, I do wish there would be a third movie; the first movie sated the appetite of the alien lovers, this one- the deviant behaviour and possible proof of psychics and/or existence of God - which leads me to believe that us monster lovers should also get an installment of X-Files on the big screen which deal with that side of X-Files. Of course, I am just a dreamer. After this movie, I really doubt that Chris Carter would produce a third.

Overall, this seemed like it could have been a two episode special of X-Files if the series was not already complete. In fact, there wasn't any reason this should have been on big screen, except it was probably the only route it could have gone. With an ended series, it would not make sense to air it on T.V., and surely the series deserves better than a direct to DVD release.

It may have been a money grab, sure. Or it may have been Carter's last leg for the characters Mulder and Scully and end the speculation that followed the fandom after the finale of its last season, perhaps to give us all insight to what they are up to after the X-Files project was closed by the FBI. Afterall...this really didn't seem like an X-Files case. The link between the case in the movie, and the cases investigated in the series was...well vague. But they were there, and we know what they are now doing, and perhaps...we know what they will be doing in the future.

Still..an interesting story, and a hell of a lot better than that travesty Fight the Future.

Spoiler:
they'll be doing each other that's what they'll be doing :P
XD

I will start by saying my girl friend and I are huge Xfiles fans... This movie was terrible. It was like watching a 2 hour episode from season 9... If you have watched season 9 then you understand the pain... I am completely dissapointed. I mean damn it did not feel like a movie at all... Fight the Future was far better and even that was not a great movie..

Well is a movie from a series that is finished. I agree old X files good, new X files bad. I'll wait till it comes on the tele.

I do have to agree that it wasn't a very X-Files like movie. I found the plot interesting, but like I mentioned before, it seemed too much like CSI. I didn't find it too terrible - I think it may have done better as a special, but I don't think they had any choice but to release it as a movie since the series ended.

Now that I think about it, it could have been a better movie because the plot was interesting in its own way (though I think they should have focused more on the German experiments) if they had produced it not as an X-Files movie and had just left the series as it was. It didn't need to have X-Files tagged on to it, and it may as well have been a completely seperate movie, without Mulder and Scully.

Personally, I only enjoyed X-Files season 1-5 and stopped watching after that because Iw as so appalled with the direction it was taking.

On the other hand, I am so glad that it did not end the way I fear it would, where Carter would take a page from Lucas and Spielberg and have Mulder and Scully get married in the end just like poor old Indy.

If it were a 2 hour special for the series it would have been ok. When i saw the German scientists in the movie i became all giddy like the movie was finally taking that turn for the better... You know were the world becomes at risk and no one knows it but Molder... then... NOT... I agree with you it was a special and they had no choice but to make the movie out of it. 2 FBI agents and a little boy were in danger in the movie... Wow.

I almost thought for a second it was going the way of Wolfenstein. Were Hitlers SS squad was getting involved in super natural and unlocked something that for sure shouldnt have been... NOT... So i agree with you they should have gone further with the German experiments.

I forgot about the movie 5 minutes after watching it, as my attention turned to Joba Chamberlain was shutting out the Sox... But as you have reminded me of it... I remember how much i did not like it.

Also Zeph i thought the series was fine up to the end of 7. Season 8 & 9 were just plain bad man lol.
