You iz stupid. **Political Debate Thread**

I took the term straight from my psychology book.

I'm not arguing the point, but it's still jargon. ^^ The educational institution LOVES jargon. Makes them feel important. And it makes me want to slap the average "soft science" professor until he loses consciousness.

This is why I hate politics cause this page can go on for another 20 and in the end no one will think any differently

An MB prolly isn't the best place to do this anyways

You can learn from it while still not changing your opinion. This is in addition to the fact this quite fun for some of us just like spam threads entertain other posters.
An MB prolly isn't the best place to do this anyways
Messageboards are a great place to have these kind of discussion. It gives time to think out your point, fully research and analyze your oppenents points, and is viewable to others who might want to add in.

Maybe I'm the only one that doesn't enjoy reading page after page after page of what people think is going on in our government as well as others. I epmhasize "think" because no ever really knows for sure what is going on. You can't know because the information you are getting may not be the truth. Would you think it wise to accpet what a politictian says at face value. Thats excluding those behind that you never hear about.

I'm not saying this is the case in every situation, but how can you be sure it isn't? Seems silly to fight for a side where you can't trust what they say.

Unfortunately I am not so unstoppable and been quite sick lately. I'm on a lot of meds recently and really cant do a whole lot besides watch The Tour de France, hunt Stroper some and find myself doing things that dont make much sense (having a blood draw a tetanus shot and a lot of meds in one day!). btw, its most likely mono, they dont know yet, but as my doctor put it "wow those lymph nodes are huge".

I'll try to respond soon but right now im just not up for it until i feel better.

I don't care for spam threads that people seem to like, but do you see me saying they can't do it just because I don't like reading it? No one is forcing you to read this thread, you know what it is about before entering. Some people enjoy discussing this stuff despite your government conspiracy theories. 8) We work with the information we have available. 2nd guessing everything the government tells us would be even less productive than you are already accusssing us of being. Just what purpose do you see for a message board if not discussion?

Take your time Matt. This thread isn't moving fast. Hope you feel better soon.

I wasn't reffering to him "beating" you at this discussion if that's what you think. It's not about winning or loosing it's about learning, thinking, and discussing in a topic like this. I hope you get well soon.

See I use to be this way. They do tend to lie or state things that they will do but never happen. However, if you can learn to read people you can understand the beauty of being on the outside of politics looking inside. I don't claim a political party at all. I don't even claim Independant. I simply take what everyone says, evaluate it, and go from there with what sounds and looks (by reading them) to be the most truthful or better for Americas future. Despite the horrid reputations political figures have with telling the truth among most members of society a lot of them do tell the truth. It's the media that screws with our brains. If you choose a political side you often denying yourself from finding the truth. This shows mostly, from what I've seen in my life, from the Democratic party which is basically the media side as well. Nothing the Rep. party does is right, valid, or even morally correct. The Rep. party is often a little more conservative and if they see something right, no matter the side, they will get behind it. Their is still alot of things the Rep. party passes off that shouldn't be but the Dem. party seems to have the biggest issue of support. Anyway, with all that being said don't trust the media, don't trust the sides, trust yourself and what you get out of reading the people. If it doesn't interest you just because it's boring then disregard this post.

Nah, thats not what I quoted that for Strid. You probably agree with Rones, and thats fine, but I didnt take it as that.

Germany and Japan were both created Top to bottom by the allies after WWII.

If it doesn't affect you, who cares? That has got us into so many messes. Just for example, the saying: Who will stand when they take the blacks away? Who will stand when they take the Jews away? Who will stand when they take the Asians away? Who will be left to stand when they come to take me away? If you never stand up for others, who is going to help stand up for you when you need it? That was the same reason WWII got so bad. We didn't care when the Axis took all those countries, and no one stood up for them. But when the Axis came for us, there weren't many left to stand up to them. The earlier you stop these things, the better it will be for everyone.

Helping these other countries can help us. Stoping tyrants before they spread benefits you in your safe, quiet suburban home whether you realize it or not. If you had psychology, you would encounter something called learned helplessness. When people are put through pain with no ability to stop it themselves, they come to accept their fate. Later when they do have a chance to relieve themselves from this pain, they will not act because they have a percieved helplessness. This is because they have poor sense of their locus of control.

1. I'm saying as a nation if it doesnt affect you, you have no obligation to help. What you are saying well it will affect us in the end. Well if it is guaranteed or very likely, you provide no clash to what I'm saying. You are agreeing to what I'm saying, at that point the learned helplesness isnt giving you any offense against me. But I'd like to turn it by saying learned helplesness is perpetuated by top-bottom nation building that neocon policy advocates because it further disorientates their locus of control is in another entity altogether.

2. So now you have given yourself the burden of proof that a nation must act in all possible travesty because by some causal chain it is going to affect us negatively to a significant (significance in terms or life, liberty, capital) enough degree to warrant action. Go.

I couldn't disagree more. Morality is made to help people live happy and productive lives in a society. Some radical religious clerics wield a skewed version of morality to gain influence and power, but that is wrong (I realize that's a morale call too). Morality's main purpose is to teach us how to live our lives...together.

Of course you disagree, I expected that, tell me why. What is freedom but a buffer by those who fear that those in power will control them? What is tyranny but a means to control others freedom from trumping your own? Morality is a mechanism which tries to achieve a balance or harmony in society ny creating psychological buffers against the overextension of either side (ie guilt). Nietzsche specifically says dont allow this to determine how you live your life (coming from a period where Christian moral doctrine was losing power in Europe, but attempting to steer people from Nihilism) but make yourself into your own work of art.

That is a very cruel statement, and that means a lot coming from someone like me who is usually called cold. Just because someone has power and control, does not justify it nor justify their mistreatment of others.

People can be quite cruel....its an observation on that nature. Its not about justification as much as it is an observation on why that structure exists.

When people have a high feeling of their locus of control, their self efficacy improves. This makes for happier more preductive people. A feeling freedom (not to the point of anarchy) and self control makes people happier and live more productive lives. People who have a low locas of control have difficulty feeling competent in tasks they would other wise excel at, have low self efficacy, and develop learned helplessness.

Im not going to say your psych professor is wrong, hell if i know. How are people going to be better off if another dictator takes power in Iraq when we leave (assuming we arent there for a good 30 years, but i dont think anyone was expecting that)? How are we centering their locus of control by saving them from a cruel dictator which perpetuates a helpless mindset?

Sure you can't know everything or predict the future of what will actually make someone happy. That is why you just act to the best of your abilities for what you think will have the highest chance of a good outcome. It really comes down to a judgement call. If you act toward that goal, no one should hold it against you when things don't work out quite right.

But Utilitarianism is strictly a teleological standard which is very blatant in saying an action is either moral or immoral based on its outcome NOT its intent. If things dont work out quite right Jeremy Bentham's head will free itself from its glass case in Britian and haunt you forever!

Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs would agree with you, but like me say there is much more too it. Yes, our basest desire is safety, avoidence of fear, and self preservation. Yet, after achieving that goal there are higher motivations for all of us.

I hate Maslow's hierarchy and yes I know it, its about as simple as the food pyramid: make sure you are alive, dead people arent happy, then make sure you have love and self esteem then you can have self realization!

Now for a few reply questions. Why do you think people do volunteer work? Why do people help random strangers they see on the street with no visible future benefit for themselves down the line? Would you let a stranger cross a bridge about to collapse who doesn't realize it? Would you at least warn him of the danger and let him make an informed decision? Would you give up your life to save a stranger's life in another country? To save 100?

1. Some do volunteer work for religious reasons, some do it so colleges will think they are a responsible citizen, some do it out of civic duty, and others do it based on some moral belief they hold. They do it because it will either benefit them materially or it will benefit them morally/emotionally through fulfilling a percieved or actual obligation to a moral or civic code.

2. Any egalitarian or humanitarian act is done out of a percieved obligation stemming from a moral belief and the majority of people will fulfill it if it little sweat off their back, only people with strong convictions go further.

I'm not saying this is bad, I'm just saying you only have an obligation to it if its your belief or an actual concrete civic obligation.

3. The next two questions: It isnt about what I would do its about what I'm inherently obligated to do which is nothing, my obligations stem from moral duties etc. Personally, I'd warn him and try to stop him from crossing, because thats how I am, unless it was someone I really didnt like and were so stupid they had it coming to them, like if the bridge was closed off but they went across anyway. You may try to expand this globally, but I never said that it would remain the same in a different situation I dont do it out of a moral conviction, its just if i did not my background growing up would cause me guilt if i did not.

4. No. I do not have an obligation to complete strangers in a different country, if i was ever drafted id fight of course, if my life is equal to that of another persons in another part of the world why should mine be sacrificed if i dont choose for it to be sacrificed? And adding more lives to it is only devaluing the nature of humanity, people are not to be calculated into those sort of ratios unless there is an equal obligation to all those people and you are in control of their fates ie government.

AND .... im still sick, but doing better.

More replies, but shorter at least this time.
So now you have given yourself the burden of proof that a nation must act in all possible travesty because by some causal chain it is going to affect us negatively to a significant (significance in terms or life, liberty, capital) enough degree to warrant action. Go.
I don't quite see myself in that position, but w/e. Any time we help another country, it increases the chances of receiving help in return. I'll try to relate this to a philosophy example I was given. Which world would you prefer to live in?

A. A world where no one steals, but you do steal.
B. A world where no one steals, and neither do you.
C. A world where everyone steals, and so do you.
D. A world where everyone steals, but you don't.

I ordered them according to greastest benefit for you. Of course we all want choice A, but if everyone goes for that we are self defeating and end up with choice C. Thus if everyone instead strives for B, we end up with B. Its not optimum, but not everyone can get optimum at the same time. Now for the relation:

A. A world where every country helps others, but you don't.
B. A world where every country helps others, and sor do you.
C. A world where no country helps others, and neither do you.
D. A world where no country helps, but you do.

As you can see, this example works much the same. Choice A is what we would prefer, but it is self defeating. So everyone should aim for the next best option of B. How is that for a justification? :o
What is freedom but a buffer by those who fear that those in power will control them?
Freedom is a sense of self control in your own life. The abiltiy to persue what makes you happy (as long as it doesn't impede others freedom; creating a slightly controled freedom). We know what slavery is, freedom is the opposite end of the spectrum.
make yourself into your own work of art.
I'm sorry, but what does that mean? I went through a couple art classes in junior high, but I don't think you are refering to paintings.
People can be quite cruel....its an observation on that nature. Its not about justification as much as it is an observation on why that structure exists.
Why: 1. The reason, cause, or purpose for which.
Cruelty is not the reason or justificaiton for the structure's existance.
How are people going to be better off if another dictator takes power in Iraq when we leave ... ? How are we centering their locus of control by saving them from a cruel dictator which perpetuates a helpless mindset?
Last I checked we were installing a republic and they held elections recently. That implies they will not have another dictator. You don't center a locus of control, you improve it. When people gain a sense of control, choice, rights, freedom, it grows. The ability to have a legitamate election for their leader for the first time in decades is a big step in the right direction. People with a strong locus of control will not fall into learned helpness and are more likely to help themselves in the future.
But Utilitarianism is strictly a teleological standard which is very blatant in saying an action is either moral or immoral based on its outcome NOT its intent.
I'm just going to have to disagree with your interpretation. An action is not judged solely on the result and consequences. The intent plays a huge role in the morality of the action. Just look at our own legal system (not saying it's perfect). When you kill someone, whether you get first degree murder or man slaughter depends solely upon intent. If you act with good, reasonable intentions for what is seeable as the best, most reliable outcome, then that action can not be called moralely wrong.
2. Any egalitarian or humanitarian act is done out of a percieved obligation stemming from a moral belief and the majority of people will fulfill it if it little sweat off their back, only people with strong convictions go further.
You and your social contract beliefs. Have to give you credit for coming up with a creative answer at least.
I do not have an obligation to complete strangers in a different country
I notice you bring up the word 'obligation' quite a bit. Do you have an obligation to some equally strange person in your own city? State? Country? Continent? World? It's all a matter of perspective and where you draw your lines. Some people draw them larger than their country (which seems to be where you draw yours).
And adding more lives to it is only devaluing the nature of humanity, people are not to be calculated into those sort of ratios unless there is an equal obligation to all those people and you are in control of their fates ie government.
I'll use the line my philosophy teacher used, would you boil a baby if it would save a million lives? A billion? All acts, no matter how awful (eg: boiling a baby) have some limit where it is outweighed. This relates back to my first example in this post about stealing. In this case, if everyone made the decision to sacrifice their own life to save many others, the world would be a better place than a world where no one would sacrifice their own life to save millions. This example is best seen in bee hives, no bee wants to die, but they will all die unless a few sacrifice themselves in defence of their colony.

What did the doctor say was wrong?

Im not sick anymore, just real lazy. I have responses I may type them.

The doctor said something along the lines of "Its probably just some unnamed virus floating around that comes and goes" which wasnt reassuring, he said it was viral because my symptons werent specific to one thing and my 10 day antibiotic regimine didnt do much.

I’m a little confused at what you are saying. Are you saying you would boil a baby to save a million lives or that you wouldn’t.

I personally would give my own life to save a million people, but I would not take a single innocent life of another to save a million.

I personally would give my own life to save a million people, but I would not take a single innocent life of another to save a million.
Saying I would. Inaction is an action. By not acting on your ability to save those million lives by taking one, it is the same as if you killed that million. If taking one life (good or bad), would save one million people and you choose not to take that life, then you just helped kill those one million people.

Sadly Stalin said it best, one death is a tragedy, a million is a statistic.

So you feel that part of the holocaust was justified, because more people have been saved by the medical advancement that the Nazi produced, than the total number of people killed for experiments?

While in hind sight we could go back in time and execute certain people and preserve an un-countable amount of life, we can’t possible do that for the future. Most of the atrocities that have been committed though out history where originally justified on the grounds of killing one, we are saving many others.

Associating the example with the holocaust is a poor attempt to bring up strong emotions to block out reason. The medical advances that saved all those lives could have been brought about without the huge lose of life. Additionaly, the lose of life to experimentation during the holocaust was a very small percentage of those killed. A less biased example would be testing a new cancer treatment drug that has a high chance of killing the test patient, but also a high chance of creating a cure that would save millions.

I also don't remember trying to justify any atrocities with this statement. My origonal example that stemmed this whole conversation was one of self sacrifice. The later example I gave after Mattaru said he would not give his life to save any number of people was the baby one which had been created by my philosophy teacher. I'm also not discussing the fact that hindsight is 20/20. Of course picking out certain people could have saved many we see now. I'm refering to things you know now and for certain. Such as shooting a man about to set off a bomb in the middle of a crowd, you know killing that man will save many lives.
