and I'm seeing an aweful lot of DRK/BLMs. They seem to do pretty well too. So I'm to assume this combo looses it's lustre as the levels wear on?
And about rdm/brd, everything fire said, plus because giving all 1-3 mages ballad ontop of refresh so the whole backrow gets 4mp/tick, they can also pass etudes and prelude around to melee/rng, which is easy. Or sing any AOE buff song. While the difference wouldn't be huge, it would be noticablely slightly.
About base stats, brd has the mnd and int equal to that of a rdm basiclly, so no lose there.
Max mp is for bad parties and emergencies, good parties mage-wise are good more thanks to mp regen and proper resting techniques.
The only complaints I can see are as follows
-No status cures for certain mobs, but most mobs have nothing but poison and slow, and haste covers the slow. Minus the rare exception
-No converse mp, but ballad cancels that out
-No escape
-No elemental seal for sticking emergency situation sleep on a link/add.
Of course, if there is already a whm and blm in the party, the points that are anti /brd become almost completely worthless then. blm/ and whm/ cover the above. And often times status cures such as silena, stona, and viruna while occasionsally needed, are not the majority of the time until later levels.
Of course when you think about it, /blm on rdm is more for avoiding bad situations, while /brd is geared for keeping a good party rolling. So I'm not claiming one is better, rather, both are good subs, along with /whm.

Firestreak wanting to be a drg/smn? Lol who would've ever guessed that.
