So I picked this up off the PSN after coming across the SA thread, and wow, this game is fun.

If you've never played a Rogue-like, basically it's an RPG Survival game. You need to eat. Equipment degrades. You level up. Random Loot. Random Dungeons. You and Enemies move at the same time.

Though ZHP uses the same engines used to make the Disgaea games, so a lot of the mechanics are the same. You can pick up and throw anything. The progression system is it's own. Everytime you clear a dungeon, or die, you're sent back to your base and all your level ups are converted in to raw stats(Your True Level,) but experience point-requirement-wise, you're set back to Level 1. If you die however, you lose all items and cash currently on hand. You can store gear at the base, and use your cash to upgrade things. There isn't a bank to store cash though. Or atleast, not one I've come across. You can combine items to mix and match effects and abilities.

This game makes no illusions that it's a grindfest. All Rogue-likes are in a sense. It's all about getting bigger and badder. The dungeons in the Story missions aren't long at all, each subchapter has been 5 floors so far.

The game is also chock full of references. I found a head lamp that granted the ability Solar Flare, which had the flavor text of "Used by the one monk to defeat his enemies." If you didn't pick up on it..

The ability use animation even mimed how it's used in Dragon Ball.

Anyway. $20. Games fun. Buy it.

Thanks for the recommendation. I'll look into it.

Fantastic game. I'm sure it's no coincidence that they picked up Kyle Hebert to voice the Unlosing Ranger.

I found a new game to play during my downtime at work.

Yep, exactly why I picked it up after reading the thread over at SA.

And damn, now that you mention it, Pirohiko did sound familiar but I couldn't place it, and it's because he's Gohan. Who he himself tried to be a Sentai Ranger-styled hero. We've come full circle here, folks.

I know you mentioned a little bit about what happens to items and stuff, but lately Rogues have either been very harsh or lenient on this so I feel the need to ask for clarification. Is there any way you can, say get half way through a dungeon, leave to store items for the next crawl, and then go back? Or is it that once you start a dungeon you have to either finish it or die in order to exit?

While both are fine by me, if it's harsh I'll pick it up later when I have loads of time to sink in to it.

The latter.

Once you unlock the Caravan, you can set what floor to have it visit you on. It allows you to use all features of your base once. Assuming everyone makes it. You have to improve the employees to better your chances of that.

Haha, that's an awesome concept really. "It may show up... if they can survive the ride out."

Every time the excavation NPC doesn't show up I get sad.

Holy crap, the Index Dengeki dungeon is impossible.
Well, probably not. But it still sucks when I run into a monster that fusion danced with a bajillion other monsters and turned into one giant ball of rape.

Yeah, basically have fun with equipment fusion to deal with it. Try and find the most broken shit you can.
