CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WTVC-TV) - A 4-year-old boy, beer in hand, is accused of stealing Christmas presents from his neighbors. It's a strange story, but also a sad one.

April Wright is 21 years old and is going through a divorce with her husband who is in jail. She says she is not sure how her 4-year-old managed to get out of the house, open a beer, and steal the neighbors presents from under their tree. Now she's just glad he's okay and says she won't let it happen again.

The child, Hayden Wright, was found around 1:45 am Tuesday, wandering the streets of his neighborhood. In a police reports, officers said he was wearing a little girl's dress and drinking a beer. The police report says the child had to taken to the hospital to be treated for alcohol consumption.

April Wright said, "Biggest concern was him being out there, getting kidnapped, getting run over, the alcohol, having to have his stomach pumped."

Wright says she woke up that night at 1:45 am and panicked when she found Hayden was gone. She says she put safety devices on all the doors so her kids couldn't get out, but Hayden was able to break the safety device off the doorknob and get outside.

Once out, Wright says her four year old followed his father's footsteps and was found on Blue Spruce Road, drinking.

"He runs away trying to find his father," she said. "He wants to get in trouble so he can go to jail because that's where his daddy is."

The Hamilton County Sheriff's Office report says Hayden rang the doorbell a few houses down and the neighbor answered, finding the child holding a partially consumeed 12-ounce beer.

Wright said, "He got it out of my father's cooler in the back and how he got it open I don't understand because it was one of those tab beers."

But it doesn't stop there. The report said Hayden then snuck into a neighbor's house through an unlocked front door, and stole five wrapped Christmas gifts. One was a girl's brown dress which Hayden was wearing when police found him.

"Going to the neighbor's house and taking their presents, very embarrassing," said April.

She admits she was not just embarrassed, but scared, and rushed to the hospital that night with Hayden. She said she tries to be a good mother and loves her son, but now feels like a failure.

"Kids do things like this and it's out of your control, you can do the best you can as a mother, everyone makes mistakes, it was an honest mistake," she said.

Wright did meet with child protective services today who told her she will get to keep custody of Hayden.

Wow. This is sad; I am ashamed to say I got a little bit of a giggle out of it too.

yeah lol the dress part made me giggle

Poor kid, probably doesn't realize just how bad it is being in jail............best of luck to both the mom and child cuz they have a long hard road ahead of them.

What a horrible, negligent parent. Social services needs to intervene and take this kid away immediately.....

I wouldnt call her negligent, maybe somewhat careless Tom, you cant be on a child 24/7 keeping track of what theyre doing. Kids will be kids unfortunately, and they will get into practically anything and everything they can if they put their minds to it. This girl is young, and probably just needs some parental coaching to help her deal with this kid by herself.

I have a 3 year old and I can assure you he will not be roaming the streets at 1:45am with a dress on drunk off his ass. How this kid managed to get out of his room, obtain access to alcohol, and break into his neighbors house undetected by the parent is 100% NEGLIGENCE on the parents part.

Have you been thrown in jail and you're child really cares about you?

He did this because he wanted to be with his dad. It was not NEGLIGENCE on the mother's part. She was fucking asleep at 1:45 AM, what else could she do? The child doesn't know better. He wanted to go to jail to be with his father. How is that the mother's fault? Was she supposed to assume "Hmm. My son may go get some beer, rob some gifts, and roam the streets so he can see his father in jail"?

I'm not saying she is the #1 Mom, but I see no evidence of her being an unfit one either.

Look at it from an unbiased point of view. Say your child was 4, say you got locked away for some stuff or whatever. Your 4 year old child is not going to think like an adult no matter what you say. If a kid wants something, 80% of the time they can get it if they want it that badly. Keep the drink high up out of reach, the child grabs a chair and climbs on things to grab it. If your child loves you that much and thinks that doing this will get him/her closer to you then he'll no doubt do it.

It is not negligent parents at all, you can't look over your child 24/7 you just can't.

yeah I'm with tom on this one, this isn't normal behavior for a 4 year old. theres obviously some BIG problems in that kids homelife.

I have a 4 year old nephew and he wouldn't know where to find a beer much less how to open and actually drink one, and the fact that the kid didn't throw it away at the first taste makes me suspect that its not the kids first beer.

then again my nephews parents aren't alcoholics ethier.

Alcoholism has horrible effects on the children of the addict.

Ok, but not every living situation is the same Tom. Hell, I wish all children had a happy, stable environment in which to grow and thrive (which I'm sure your kids do), but unfortunately, you get situations like this one where the mother is young (shes what, 20?) and its an unplanned pregnancy, caused by a low-life of all things. I mean hell, the father of this kid must have made one hell of an impression on his child for the child to love him that much. Just cuz a parent ends up in jail due to a crime, doesnt mean they are a bad parent either, it just means that person made some very unintelligent decisions which landed them there in the first place.

Children are tenacious, and when they have the will to do something, they will find a way to do it. My daughter has a fascination for controllers (or anything with colored buttons really) and i do my best to keep them out of her reach, but there have been times when i leave my door to my game room unlocked or slightly open and she gets in and climbs on stuff to reach them. You cant monitor your kids 24/7 (even if we wish we could) so calling it flat out negligence on the mother's part is highly unfair. Careless, maybe, but not negligent.

Here is why this story has gross negligence all over it:

She says she put safety devices on all the doors so her kids couldn't get out, but Hayden was able to break the safety device off the doorknob and get outside.

Obviously didn't operate the device properly, if at all, NEGLIGENCE.

Wright said, "He got it out of my father's cooler in the back and how he got it open I don't understand because it was one of those tab beers."

Placed alcohol within easy reach of the minor child in the house, NEGLIGENCE. As mentioned by Thelona obviously not this kids first beer.....

But it doesn't stop there. The report said Hayden then snuck into a neighbor's house through an unlocked front door, and stole five wrapped Christmas gifts. One was a girl's brown dress which Hayden was wearing when police found him..

Walked right out of the front door, probably unlocked seeing as the neighbors front door was unlocked as well. NEGLIGENCE.

She said she tries to be a good mother and loves her son, but now feels like a failure.

She is a failure of a mother. A NEGLIGENT failure.

"Kids do things like this and it's out of your control, you can do the best you can as a mother, everyone makes mistakes, it was an honest mistake," she said.

If this woman can look herself in the mirror and conclude she has done the best she can with this kid she is as STUPID as she is NEGLIGENT.

Wright did meet with child protective services today who told her she will get to keep custody of Hayden.

Looks like child protective services is being NEGLIGENT as well allowing this mother to retain custody. Tragic....

Careless, maybe, but not negligent.

FYI: If your are careless with something, under the eyes of the law, you are ipso facto negligent.

Did she carry out due diligence when caring for this child? No. You admit she was careless. Therefore, she was negligent.

Carelessness and negligence are two completely difference animals. One is intentional, the other, unintentional. The world aint so black and white man. Yeah she made a mistake, more than one if you wanna be picky, but doesn't make the poor woman a bad mother.

You want a negligent parent? Try whatsherface, Casey Anthony, or the mother of Riley Ann Sawyer, Kimberly Trenor; THOSE were negligent moms. One possibly killed her own daughter, and the other allowed an asshole of a step father to beat her daughter to death.

Carelessness is one of us as a parent, leaving out something that could cause harm to a child, or leaving the bathroom door open, or a bucket full of water out in the open. Are we doing so with the intention of hurting our children? I sure hope not, or it would fall under above said category.

Remember that there's shades of gray for a reason man.

There is no such thing as unintentional carelessness. Bad things can obviously happen no matter what you do but you are either careless or you are careful. If you are careless then you are negligent. It really is that simple and no there are no shades of gray....

Why you are complicating a very simple concept is beyond me.

You contend she could not have prevented this from happening. I say, she very easily could have if she wasn't so negligent. We simply have a difference of opinion.

The article clearly shows she has taken precaution for your average child. However, your average child's father isn't in prison, your average child's grand father does not leave alcohol unattended around children. Your average child does get into trouble, however they do not try to goto prison.

This is not your average child.

He needs much more of a positive, responsible and caring role model. His previous role model displayed neither of those three. He's in jail - negative influence. He drinks infront of his son - irresponsible. I bet he didn't even give his son enough of (the right kind of) attention.

She let her boyfriend's drinking influence her son.

She let her father leave alcohol unattended and in reach of her son.

These aren't small mistakes.

Responsible parents don't leave alcohol in reach of their children. Caring and influencial parents DON'T DRINK INFRONT OF THEIR CHILDREN.

I am absolutely appauled that she remains in custody.

I completely agree with dowzer, unfortunately this is my town.... fortunately as of tomorrow I will be a resident of Knoxville instead!

I always wondered what Chatt-town's short for, wow. lol

I see it as a massive overreaction. Where are you supposed to keep alcohol? In a safe guarded by a 10-digit PIN? Most normal people keep beer in the fridge. Even if you hide it in a high-up place, or a well hidden area, kids search. They'll find it eventually. The issues this kid is displaying are normal for a kid who's parent is in jail. He's just taking it much further than most kids do by actively trying to reach his father. The mother takes some blame, but to say the kid should be taken off her because of this is ridiculous. If you think he has issues now, what impact do you think taking him away from his 1 remaining parent will have? My guess is, you didn't think at all.

Well no one really knows the truth. She could be saying all those things to keep her child, when in reality she did neglect him, but know one knows what to believe.. so they trust her. Or she just has a pretty intelligent kid on her hands, and he did manage to do those things. When she did everything a normal parent would do to avoid that situation.

Honestly there are some smart little fuckers out there and I wouldn't be surprised he got around the locks she had placed. When I was like 4-5 (not sure the exact age), I broke out of my bedroom window, walked around outside, then came back knocking on my front door. Mom came and checked the door, finding me outside in the middle of the night... It does happen.
