8 years old Killed 2 people o.O

The whole right to bear arms thing I found exceedingly amusing.

That rule was made ages ago, for one reason.

America, or,the thirteen colonies, had just finished seperating from Britain, hell they were in the process of seperating. Thus, they wanted every damn citizin possible to know how to use a gun, so when the Britains invaded, they'd all be ready.

Problem is, we forogt this and are still practicing, cept I don't think Britain has any intention of randomly showing up to invade the US anymore...

here is the reason for the right to bear arms... It is not for an external attack it is from the kind that comes from within.

Declaration of Independence said:
"But, when a long train of abuses and usurpations,
pursuing invariably the same object,
evinces a design to reduce them under absolute despotism,
it is their right, it is their duty,
to throw off such government, and
to provide new guards for their future security."

The way i look at it is when someone asks me for my gun... that is probably when I am going to need it the most.

i have... 11 guns atm and i think that everyone of them is important for different reasons.

What exactly do you need 11 guns for?

i have 4 hunting rifles 2 pistols 2 shotguns 1 Assault rifle and 2 pellet guns... (maybe the pellet guns shouldnt count).

4 hunting rifles... range and variety (plus 2 of them were gifts from my dad)
Glock 9mm and a DE .50 (gift from Dad again)
2 pump shotguns
Assault rifle (CZ Vz.58 ... call this one protection cause its the one under my bed and no there are no kids in my house)
2 pellet guns (toys but practice doesnt hurt.)

People who own guns are paranoid, and paranoid people should not play with dangerous weapons. I have walked down streets alone at night in several cities and have never been assaulted/mugged/beaten. Even if I were, I dont think I would shoot a human being. I only know one person who was the victim of theft - she was dragged half a block downtown when some guy tried to take her purse only to wind up kneeing him in the balls.

As a counter argument, the Second Amendment refers to the right of the country's militia to bear arms. At the time it was drafted, all men of age were considered part of an unorganized militia (against the British or otherwise), but that is no longer the case. I suppose if shooting people is your bag, then you may interpret it another way... Call me unfair, but all the gun-owners I've met were nut jobs, guys who play far too many first-person shooters, or your standard "I like to shoot stuff" hicks.

And the reason that people like you can afford not to be paranoid is because the people who would be breaking into your house are afraid that they are going to run into someone like me.

And the reason they are afraid to run in to someone like you is because you're allowed to have guns. What's to say the criminal don't bring a gun to keep himself safe?

Also, as I said earlier, Japan has probably got the lowest crime rate in the world and its mainly due to even stricter gun laws and I am considering living there if I can become fluent in the language.

You just have to put up with being in one of the most crowded, racist ridden countries in the world. The grass isn't always greener on the other side of the fence. As much as I dislike Britain at the moment there isn't anywhere majorly better.

I totally agree; it doesn't matter what country you live in, there is always going to be some form of problem.

Gerry, other countries might seem "better" to live in because the main focus of English media is based on English events, so you're being informed of all this countries problems whilst hearing little to nothing about the problems other countries -- its not surprising that you are under the illusion that Japan is some sort of heavenly utopia where life is perfect. But frankly, if you don't feel safe living in England, then I wouldn't move to the USA because as far as violent crime goes, it's worse.

QFT. The need for guns in this age may not seem as great as it used to be when that was written, but it is a basic right in this country and not one I would be willing to give up.

Also, if I had a gun and someone broke into my house and threatened me, you bet your ass I'd shoot them. Contrary to what some people who are posting here seem to think, I wouldn't feel one iota of guilt over it either. You break into someone's house and you make your own bed to lie in.

Two words. Zombie. Apocalypse.

Duh.

This too! lol

If there was ever a point in time where there was a reason to need a militia in this country, we would all be in it. Paranoia has little to do with gun ownership, many people own guns simply because they like to hunt or because they enjoy target practice. Some people are just collectors. My eldest brother used to own more than 50 guns because he collected mostly really old Winchester's etc. He wasn't paranoid, it was just something he enjoyed, like people who collect swords and stuff like that.

Why wouldn't you be willing to give up a "basic right" that kills more people than it protects? Owning a gun is not in any way, shape or form a "basic" right. And even if it was, you can't get a right more basic that the right to live; a right that many people lose because of legal gun ownership.

I think its completely insane that guns are legal when the amount of people that are killed in crimes and accidents is so high, and that they would be so low if they were just to be banned.

The right to own a gun is pointless.

  • How many people do you know that own a gun?
  • Out of those people, how many of those have actually ever needed use their gun?

That guy who was shot to death by an 8 year old owned a gun. I'm doubting he ever needed to use it. Now he's dead. If guns were illegal he probably wouldn't be though.

You can even look at it in other cases like school shootings. Take that instance that happened about a year ago in Finland where that psychotic kid went on a rampage around his school and shot about 10 people dead. Thats more people who would be alive today if guns were outlawed in Finland. And shit like that happens a lot in the US, too.

Well there had to be something I'd disagree with you on sooner or later Kero /sadface.

And at the risk of being attacked like everyone seems to get when they state their opinion...

People can be devil's advocate as much as they want and say "But what if the 8 year old was molested/beaten etc." I doubt the 8 year old even knew what he was doing when he picked up the gun to shoot.

How many kids now a days have toy guns? I know that an 8 year should have the right of mind to know the difference, but really...

What if he was just pissed off at his dad for... being a dad? There was a kid in Canada who ran away from home because his parents made him stop playing a "violent" video game and now he's turned up dead.

There are lots of "what if's", it's just sad that a child was given access to a gun in the first place.

Gun ownership is a basic right we have as citizens of the United States. The ability to overthrow our government should the need arise is one of the basic rights this country was founded on. I would also argue that having the ability to protect yourself and your family is a basic right of every person.

You seem to think that making guns illegal here would remove the problem. It wouldn't. This country, unlike the ones you point to as examples of countries where guns are illegal and better for it, has always had guns in the general populace. Even if guns were made illegal it would take enormous amounts of capital and decades (if not longer) to get rid of all the guns in the populace. Our already-overrun prisons would be filled with people whose only crime was not being willing to give up one of their rights.

Yeah there is no way that kid should have had access to that gun. It's a terrible thing that happened without a doubt. I just don't think that the millions of safe gun owners should have to pay the price of protecting stupid people from themselves.

As far as I'm concerned, anyone who supports the right to own a gun and then is upset by someone being shot to death - whether it be on purpose or accidental - is a hypocrite.

And if you read my post, you would also note that I didn't say it would "remove" the problem, I said it would make it a lot rarer. You would also know that the point I'm making is guns kill more people that they save, implying that guns don't have the ability to protect a family. The 8 year old is an example. That gun didn't do a great job protecting that family.

It is possible for a country to ban guns; its been done before and it could be done again.

Obviously everyone is entitled to their opinion but you are deluded if you think the US is "better" because guns aren't banned. I gave the Finland example of school shootings cause its the first one I could think of. The vast majority of school shootings took place in America, as do most accidents/crimes involving guns compared to most western countries.

I blame the dad, not the kid, for not showing the kid how to respect firearms and also for not having it in a cabinet with a safety. I do not have any kids so i have them scattered around my house but if i had a kid you can believe that they would be completely out of reach of the little guy.

Thats called... ding ding personal responsibility.

Something that lefties know nothing about.

This statement is fail.

Revise that to be about gun safety and it wouldn't be as bad, but as it is right now thats just stupid. That basically like saying people who own a car, but are upset if someone dies in a car accident is a hypocrite. Come on.

I can see where Curjos is coming from. Cars do other things and aren't meant to inflict harm. A gun is meant to hurt people. Even knives have other purposes.

Good luck trying to take guns from 100 million or so angry Americans defending their right to their guns. Most western countries are not the USA, we take our rights very seriously, we also take any government intervention into our lives seriously.

I can see where you are coming from, but at the same time I understand that guns are not just meant to hurt people. Guns are also used to protect people, to hunt animals, and for general sport.

Maybe it's just a cultural difference, but generally speaking in this country we do not like any rights to be taken away, and we prefer a minimal amount of government intervention in our lives. Personally I think that there is too much government intervention as it is.

I don't own any guns btw, but I do not like the idea of anyone telling me I couldn't if I wanted to. :P
