A lot of people make a lot of really great points here.
Lets get this out of the way - I am pro choice. I don't believe that any person ever should have the power to tell a woman what she can and can't do with her body regarding bringing another life into the world. There are many reasons that women decide to have an abortion or to keep their child, and each case is very specific, and it is impossible to generalize each of those cases into a "you should keep the baby" law.
However, I believe that there are MANY cases of unnecessary abortions. Carelessness, a devil may care attitude, and the lack of responsibility that a lot of men and women feel when having sex and getting knocked up lead to plenty of cases where a woman may have an abortion for no reason other than she does not want to deal with it. Those situations bother me, a lot.
My solution for that is NOT to make abortion illegal or anything close to that, but to expand the level of education and available options that there for women when they become pregnant.
There is a HUGE issue with the country regarding orphan-ism and putting children in the "system" - many children end up being tossed around from home to home and put in situations that may be extremely unfavorable to their development as a healthy human being. I have a family member that I use as an example to base this opinion on - an adopted child into my family (not my immediate family) that has been abandoned by the person who adopted him and is now living with another family member in less than favorable conditions, and has been torn away from his biological grandparents through the adoption process which has hurt his grandparents (who are people too! A lot of people forget that pregnancy does not involve JUST THE CHILD). I'm not psychiatrist so I cannot comment on how this has affected him now that he is about 10 years old - but I do think that cases like his and even worse ones happen all over the place and can eventually damage a child's development. I also know that there are PLENTY of people who are adopted who grow to live healthy happy lives, but I also know that our SYSTEM is severely flawed. I don't think that adoption is the right choice in every single case where a woman does not want to raise a child and is going to choose abortion as her solution. Also I would personally not be able to have a child just to stick it in a system where I would have no idea what happens to it - or risk the fate of my child to be worse than it would be if I carried it.
However, there are PLENTY of couples out there who cannot have children of their own. I don't think that many women out there are presented with the different ways adoption can be handled, such as meeting the couple that the child is going to be adopted to. I am sure that there are several options like that out there that most women are not even made aware of, and may actually suit their situation rather well if the possible outcomes were seriously discussed.
There is a certain level of education that needs to be presented to women who are having abortions that aren't medically necessary - education about child raising assistance for people who are too poor, education about adoption options and different ways that can be handled, even education about contraceptives and how to protect yourself.
If the government and people could get over the whole "should or shouldn't abortion be legal" issue and discuss these things instead, I think that a lot of people would be a lot more educated as to why abortion happens, and be more open to the idea that every case is not the same, I think a lot of pro-life people would be second guessing their opinions and realizing that is just not as simple as black and white. The human race is not as simple as black and white. Religion is not black and white, either.
