Abortion video

So basically everyone should just fuck like rabbits if that is what they want to do and who cares if they get pregnant they can just have an abortion?

this made me Lol, because I don't think this is what Hal was getting at. There is a certain level of responsibility that needs to be upheld with this. But it's isn't a matter of whether person is a rape victum or someone who USES protection but got pregnant anyway.. yes it does happen...

Not everyone is ready to have a baby when it happens for them so rather then bring a life into the world that you would be responsible for, for the next 18-22 years, where they parties involved with creating this child were not ready financially nor emotionally, is just as wrong.

Again should people use it as a regular form of birth control, no. those are the irrsponsible people who should have their sex organs removed and stuffed ina jar.

But to say that women shouldn't have abortions because they arent ready, and only when its some traumatic event is just stupid, and wrong.

My opinion is that people should be allowed to have an abortion if they themselves cannot support the baby. However, adoption should be offered the second they tell the doctor that they want to abort. As long as the baby is in good health, and the parents are STD/Illness free there isn't really reason to terminate, and as such adoption should be preferred, not mandatory.

I dunno... choosing to end a pregnancy to protect your ability to keep putting food on the table sounds like a perfectly justified decision to me.

No, you misunderstood. With what you've just said there I agree with completely. If you are infact unable to afford to support a child and keep it fed, clothed and healthy; I can then understand it as well. However, one could also adopt out their child for the same reasons. The women I was speaking of, abuse the right of abortion as their own personal 'insurance policy'. When they get knocked up by accident, using it has birth control and just 'getting rid' of their 'problem'. Some women find their lives too 'important' for the 'burden' of a child. Some are just too slutty to give a fuck about what they're doing.

I don't believe I was saying anything about anyone's sexual frequency. It's not related to whether a woman has the right to decide what goes on inside her own body. That attitude probably works if you're in the "only irresponsible sluts and whores have abortions" camp, but that's not an attitude I share and I hope you don't, either.

But since you asked, of course I think adults are free to fuck like rabbits if they want. It's part of being an adult. Why the hell shouldn't you?

I doubt many women are using abortion as their only form of birth control. It's not exactly the cheapest and easiest alternative. But even if they are, I don't care. If a woman doesn't want to have a baby, she doesn't have to have a baby; it really doesn't matter why as far as I'm concerned. This isn't The Republic of Gilead we're living in.

Some women find their lives too 'important' for the 'burden' of a child.

You're kidding, right? You think a woman is wrong to place value on her own life? That she should surrender her goals and dreams just because she gets pregnant? That's the whole point of reproductive freedom in the first place.

Since when did it become OUR decision to decide what a women should do with HER baby?

Opinions are neat an all but ultimately, it's not your decision to say if a women can exterminate her baby or not.

If you wanna use that logic doesn't the baby belong to the man too?
I'm bored and feel like seeing where this convo goes.
ACtually yeah that is a good topic. What if one parent wants the abortion(probably woman in most aguments) when the other partner wants to keep and raise the child?

I'm against it, I mean, Murder is Murder. You're taking someones chance at life away before they can even enjoy it.

It doesn't really matter. The woman's decision trumps the man's. It's not his body, and it's not his call. The guy may have his own ideas about what should happen -- I'm not going to fault a guy for asking -- but at the end of the day it really doesn't matter how badly he wants it. If she doesn't want to carry a pregnancy to term, she shouldn't have to.

Did you watch the video? What do you advocate for women who have abortions? Would you charge women with murder and give them jail terms equal to an actual murder between adults?

No, I'm not kidding. There is no reason a woman shouldn't place value on her own life. I am a woman, I place a great amount of value on my life. However, should I get pregnant, I'm not going to let the birth and raising of a child get in the way of my goals and dreams. There are such things as working mothers, that are strong, important and very crucial to the companies they work for. A woman that think she can just throw away her natural born right because she's 'too busy' should take a look at the real women kicking ass and taking names around her.

Yeah I'm also against abortion. Just because the parents are irresponsible doesn't mean they can take away what could of been someones life. That child has the same rights to live like the parents do and everyone else for that matter. Its a selfish decision really. Its not the child's fault that the parents failed to realize the consiquences that sex can bring if they're not careful. If anything at least put the child up for adoption so someone who wants to take care of a child can raise it the proper way and give him/her a chance at life. Espcially for rape victims that couldn't control her decision of getting pregnent.

lol.. I would have to disagree here. I have quite a few friends that got pregnant, with long time boyfriends/fiance's etc.. and the men were the one insisting on terminating the pregnancy. That's a bit of a low blow to women to say that most of us want to abort a fetus rather then the men. :/

Then they're not on the same page, and probably never were to begin with. This is a discussion between two people, that will not go over lightly. It's a hard decision to make, but in finality, it is her choice as it is her body.

In some ways, I find this attitude that a woman isn't a "real" woman unless she embraces motherhood even more disturbing than some of the other stuff in this thread. Why trivialize a woman's decision against having children? Not everyone wants to be a parent. I consider myself too busy for children; does that make me selfish?

Pro-choice. People treat abortion as though it's just another form of morning after pill. It really isn't. It's not exactly an easy thing to experience and I'm quite certain that there aren't women out there who book an abortion every month. It is essentially a last resort kind of affair, and should remain available.

I always fine the "potential life" argument a crock. First of all, a fetus is not a "human", it is a clump of cells unable to exist outsde of the mother's uterus. And if one were to consider every possible "potential life" out there, should we not be arresting men who masturbate? I mean they are wasting sperm which could have easily turned into children. For that matter, what about eggs which are lost due to menstruation?

someone's been watching "Legally Blonde"....

Wow, who thought it would be a good idea to start an abortion thread?

*looks at op*

DRAMA!

A lot of people make a lot of really great points here.

Lets get this out of the way - I am pro choice. I don't believe that any person ever should have the power to tell a woman what she can and can't do with her body regarding bringing another life into the world. There are many reasons that women decide to have an abortion or to keep their child, and each case is very specific, and it is impossible to generalize each of those cases into a "you should keep the baby" law.

However, I believe that there are MANY cases of unnecessary abortions. Carelessness, a devil may care attitude, and the lack of responsibility that a lot of men and women feel when having sex and getting knocked up lead to plenty of cases where a woman may have an abortion for no reason other than she does not want to deal with it. Those situations bother me, a lot.

My solution for that is NOT to make abortion illegal or anything close to that, but to expand the level of education and available options that there for women when they become pregnant.

There is a HUGE issue with the country regarding orphan-ism and putting children in the "system" - many children end up being tossed around from home to home and put in situations that may be extremely unfavorable to their development as a healthy human being. I have a family member that I use as an example to base this opinion on - an adopted child into my family (not my immediate family) that has been abandoned by the person who adopted him and is now living with another family member in less than favorable conditions, and has been torn away from his biological grandparents through the adoption process which has hurt his grandparents (who are people too! A lot of people forget that pregnancy does not involve JUST THE CHILD). I'm not psychiatrist so I cannot comment on how this has affected him now that he is about 10 years old - but I do think that cases like his and even worse ones happen all over the place and can eventually damage a child's development. I also know that there are PLENTY of people who are adopted who grow to live healthy happy lives, but I also know that our SYSTEM is severely flawed. I don't think that adoption is the right choice in every single case where a woman does not want to raise a child and is going to choose abortion as her solution. Also I would personally not be able to have a child just to stick it in a system where I would have no idea what happens to it - or risk the fate of my child to be worse than it would be if I carried it.

However, there are PLENTY of couples out there who cannot have children of their own. I don't think that many women out there are presented with the different ways adoption can be handled, such as meeting the couple that the child is going to be adopted to. I am sure that there are several options like that out there that most women are not even made aware of, and may actually suit their situation rather well if the possible outcomes were seriously discussed.

There is a certain level of education that needs to be presented to women who are having abortions that aren't medically necessary - education about child raising assistance for people who are too poor, education about adoption options and different ways that can be handled, even education about contraceptives and how to protect yourself.

If the government and people could get over the whole "should or shouldn't abortion be legal" issue and discuss these things instead, I think that a lot of people would be a lot more educated as to why abortion happens, and be more open to the idea that every case is not the same, I think a lot of pro-life people would be second guessing their opinions and realizing that is just not as simple as black and white. The human race is not as simple as black and white. Religion is not black and white, either.

Heh. I'd heard about the video earlier in the day, but I just now got a chance to watch it. It's even more hilarious than I could've believed.

Already been said, but no, it's not the mans decision. His opinion may persuade the women to her final decision, but it's not his body.

My biggest concern is that abortion is thrown around so flippantly, as an outpatient procedure on the same level as having a pesky mole removed. Having an abortion is a serious surgical procedure, with serious potential complications that most women don't really seem to be aware of. Having an abortion opens you up to the immediate risks of serious infections, internal hemmorhaging, and uterine and cervical ruptures. Even if you don't have immediate complications, problems can surface later when the woman becomes pregnant again. Having a previous abortion, especially if it was performed in the woman's first pregnancy, can severely increase the risks of ectopic pregnancies and miscarriages. A small percentage of women who have an abortion are rendered sterile by the procedure, and those odds increase with each successive abortion.

Now, I haven't had an abortion personally, but I have to wonder if these risks are mentioned to the women about to undergo this procedure. Simply the fact that the majority of abortions are performed on an outpatient basis with little or no pre- and post-operative care from the physician in question makes me extremely leery of the medical ethics of the average abortion clinic.

What especially makes me sad is that there are so many options for birth control available that there really is no excuse to go without. Regardless of your medical history, if you're healthy enough to actually have children then there's a form of birth control that can work for you. Condoms and the pill are just the tip of the iceberg (and I should add that there's probably about 25 different formularies of "the pill" available with different hormonal cocktails in each); you've also got diaphragms and cervical caps, the Depo shot, a birth control patch, the Nuva ring (a hormone-laden plastic ring that is looped over the cervix once a month) and two different versions of the IUD (one with hormones and one with copper). None of them are 100% it's true, but some of them come pretty damn close, and all of them are cheaper and safer than having to get an abortion.
