Sucky thing to have happen and I'm sorry to hear it. Having said that, the moral of the story is:

Rule #1: Don't give out your password.
Rule #2: If you decide to ignore rule #1, at least do your homework on the person first. Look them up on QCDN, particularly the flameboard, and back off the idea at even the slightest suggestion of stealing stuff.

Even if you think you know them well (and by this I mean lots of time together in a LS; even a static for a little while doesn't necessarily show you much), this is a good practice. Even if you don't hand your account over to someone, it's good to be aware of whether they have any skeletons in their closet that you weren't aware of.

like he said never give out your password sorry to hear about this
recently a friend of mine was stuck in an area and couldn't zone out he had a dynamis run in 10 Min's our ls was talking about it on vent and they all suggested he give me his log in he decided to do so although reluctantly and understandably so i had him call me at home and i made sure i was at log in screen i never wrote down his info just plugged it in as he gave it to me it was a complicated password i do remember that much anyway i logged in for him zoned him out of the area and logged out i didn't even check to see how much Gil he had let alone to even think about stealing his stuff i am not that way lol i know there are maybe 3-4 people i could trust with my account info and thats because i know them anywhere between 2-4 years have either met them irl or talk on the phone with them alot personally i don't understand how someone could do this and then logged on with tricked out gear that was obtained from ill gotten means shows the self respect this person has for himself although i must admit i do in a way admire his persuasiveness and how he talked more than one person into "lending" him their character i will stay away from this person don't want my rep sullied well guy back to farming bcnms tele taxi etc don't let this make you quit game make that Gil back buy your stuff back and move on lesson learned good luck

Not usually one for doing this, but the wall of text'D run on sentence hurt my eyes. (Though I did notice that it broke up nicely into sentences, just missing the punctuation.) Readable version:

Like he said, never give out your password. Sorry to hear about this.

Recently a friend of mine was stuck in an area and couldn't zone out. He had a dynamis run in 10 Min's. Our LS was talking about it on vent, and they all suggested he give me his log in. He decided to do so, although reluctantly, and understandably so.

I had him call me at home, and I made sure I was at log in screen. I never wrote down his info, just plugged it in as he gave it to me. It was a complicated password, I do remember that much anyway. I logged in for him, zoned him out of the area, and logged out. I didn't even check to see how much Gil he had, let alone to even think about stealing his stuff. I am not that way. lol

I know there are maybe 3-4 people I could trust with my account info, and that's because I know them anywhere between 2-4 years. Have either met them irl or talk on the phone with them alot.

Personally I don't understand how someone could do this, and then logged on with tricked out gear that was obtained from ill gotten means. Shows the self respect this person has for himself. Although I must admit, I do in a way admire his persuasiveness, and how he talked more than one person into "lending" him their character. I will stay away from this person. Don't want my rep sullied.

Well guy back to farming BCNMs, tele taxi, etc. Don't let this make you quit game. Make that Gil back, buy your stuff back, and move on, lesson learned. Good luck!

*absently wonders how to punctuate an end of sentence lol, and whether the period should go before or after it*

lol sux2bu. you played for months you gave to someone you could trust over the internet. el oh fucking el.

I don't know why some people have to be such dicks to this guy... He admitted it was stupid for him to give out his password but reguardless of this, he has every right to be pissed/angry. I don't think he's posting this as a "OMG I don't know how this happened" But more of a warning/rant. I think it's a shitty situation and it really sucks to have people do this to others, it's also shitty to watch everyone try to pull the big "Lol I'm smarter you" act all the time. This attitude is making for lame boring posts on qcdn, especially the flameboard.

Everyone knows this guy shouldn't of given out his password so don't think you're smarter than the average bear for telling him this over and over again eventhough he admitted it himself in his first post.

Addressing the actual first post:

That really sucks this happened, I wouldn't quit over it though - you sound like a pretty okay guy and I'm sure you have other friends that would help you get at least some of your shit back and/or get revenge on the little bastard that did this to you. It's easy to say this because I'm not logging onto a broke/naked character and don't know what I'd actually do if I were put in this situation but I do wish you he best of luck.

Hey Kaptain as you admitted, dumb move on your part, time to move on.
Look me up if you need any help trying to get gil to get your stuff back. I have close to 300 beast man seals i need to burn, maybe a couple of BCNMs, a little luck, and a few good drops. I'll split some of the profits with you to help you get back to where you were.

You have a valid point, but what if one of your RL friends called you up today and said "Hey, I gave this guy I've only known for three months a key to my house, and that asshole came in when I wasn't home and stole all my stuff! OMGZORZ!"

The first words out of my mouth would surely be "Wow, you are a fucking idiot". Same rules apply I believe. Its nice to be the optimist...but in the end this guy probably got what he had comin.

You're missing the point - he admits it was stupid for him to do it, he says it in his initial post, he's just pissed off about it. Also, it doesn't sound like he's only known this guy for a few months. Everybody knows it was a bad idea for him to give out his password - hell, he knows it - so why be such fuckin dicks about it all the time. This guy is taking more flack in this thread than the little pissant bastard that did this to him. Nobody really deserves to get their shit stolen. Yes he placed himself in this situation and it backfired. Yes he'd still have his gear if he hadn't of given out his password but it's all kind of moot to tell him that at this point. Frankly if anyone knows it's stupid give out your password it's him.

I just find it completely rediculous that in topics like this or topics that have the same basis as this people routinely turn against the poster and almost seem like they're praising people who do this kind of shit to other people. I'm shocked that some of you don't get bored posting the same shit over and over again in topics that absolutely do nothing for the thread nor the person posting it. It's like the Dunes flames that pop up. YES we know it's the dunes and it's full of idiots but it doesn't mean you can't be frustrated/pissed off by the situation. It's like people think they're contributing new content to the site when they post this stuff. As mentioned before - everyone who reads this board knows the dunes sucks but sometimes it's just nice to get shit off your chest.

It's like Aerya's post down below complaining about a shitty player. How many topics do we have on here complaining about shitty players? Yet because people posted some worthwile content in the thread instead of "LOL It's FFXI, it has shitty players - deal with it" it ended up being an interesting post. I'm just sick of everyone thread spamming with retarded condecending one liners. They're not funny, witty, smart and everyone is allready thinking the same thing you're posting.

Well, it's really just that the perpetrator was such an obvious cockbag to do that, that nothing more really needs to be said on that subject. Anyone who'd do that, certainly wouldn't be the sort to give it all back just because they got flamed about it, and anyone who'd be friends with someone that slimy would likely continue to be friends with them.

On that subject, in general, there's really nothing he or the community at large can do, except get the word out (... again, and the fact that it's "again" is very much worth noting) that the guy isn't to be trusted.

What *can* be done, however, is offers of help to the victim by his friends (and by energetic strangers with free time), to help him get back on his feet and get started again, if he can muster up the willpower.

What *can* be done is to let this event serve as an example and warning to other people too. Because in this case, it *could* have been avoided by doing a little homework before handing out the password, to find out the guy's already a thief. And so maybe, if word of this gets around, and people are that much leerier about checking up on others before handing out their passwords, then maybe it'll save someone *else* from going through this.

Even if they don't remember the perpetrator specifically, if people can remember the general incident to inspire them to go to QCDN and nose around a bit before forking over their account info ... it'll help.

The past can't be changed, and the present probably can't be changed in any way that will sufficiently make it up to the victim here. What *can* be changed is people's attitudes towards casually handing out passwords in general, and while that probably won't help Kaptain himself, it can very possibly prevent someone else from being screwed over just like him down the road.

If it makes you feel any better, if I had the acc+password I would have ebayed the account all together.
