Anime Kills Kids?

I think this kid was having extreme Imaginary Play, Animism and Egocentric thinking (if you don't know those word, LOOK IT UP!) According to Jean Piaget, this kid was still in Preoperational stage.

A lot of children will think fiction stuff are real and can be act real on it on those age, but some goes to the extreme.

This is almost like your cousin love to watch Power Ranger, and when your cousin role play with his friend, he will act like a power ranger with those power hand wrist thingy and zap friend with it.

This kid think he is Gaara and can do what he can do.

This is why there is a TV rating for a reason, little kid intent to do and mimic whats on TV and adult activitiy because their Cognitive Development isn't into Concrete/Formal Operational Stage, their logical and abstract thinking wasn't set and fully develop in at those age.

Popular cartoons and movies want children to pretend their, thier favorite character from the cartoon/movie. Just look at all the toys that have them 'pretending' to be the character, the Hulk hand things, TMNT head band and plastic weapons of that turtle. It's not a surprise he wanted to be his favorite character from the show.

Sure he ma be a bright student and comprehend everything his teacher was teaching him but when a child is with his/her friends, 1) Their usually friends 'cause they share a common interest, in this particular case, Naruto. 2) When your with friends, common sence has no bounds. Even in college and adult hood, when your with a ood friend, you go to a bar and get drunk then may go drinking and driving, 'cause at that time you and your friend are having fun. When your with a friend, that's all you both care about, that your both enjoying yourself.

People are saying children are smarter now then 16 or so years ago... You forget as well, ADD has had a more significant rise in children as well. Children don't want to pay attention as long as we did. When I do my teacher observation, I work with some children on recognizing their alphabets. (I observe Kindergarden class obviously) I can easily see when some of the kids have ADD or something else straining their learning abilities. It's hard for them to pay attention and get the correct answer and get frustrated, so I have to work with them one-on-one.

Now I may have gone off track for a bit, but what I'm getting at is, don't call the kid stupid. I'm sure half of you would've been head first with him where you his age and part of his peer group. I can semi agree with not blaming Naruto, but at the same time, as I said earlier, shows/movies are encouraging children to be just like their favorite character. Fact is though, blame does rest on the parents shoulders. A supervised adult should've been in viewing distantce of the group of kids. Even if its a group of relatives all playing together with a few of the neighborhood kids. You never know when something (like a stranger walking up to the group or a child burying his head in dirt) may happen to that group of children.

That's my say on this, it's 6:45 in the morning and I'm not fully awake so it may not all make sence lol.

Here's the thing though with the rise in ADD it's never a kid just being a kid anymore. There is a reason why there is a saying of x person has the attention of a 6 year old. A kid isn't going to be able to sit still for how long the teacher expects them to with out talking. Of course they're going to socialize because they get bored.

The blog that was posted in a thread about a week ago or so said it best, keep in mind this is paraphrased, white people always want to think their kid(s) are special when really they are really just average, or they're so special that when they cause trouble it's because they're too smart so they have became bored. He's not really special, except maybe in mental capacity, chances are he's really just average at best.

But saying that half of us would have put our heads in sand at the age of 10 is rather asinine because of television. I watched South Park at that age as well as Dragon Ball Z. Never did I once try to kill someone, or commit suicide because my parents raised me to know the difference between fantasy and reality. You know what my friends and I did? We pretended never did we actually cause harm to ourselves or another person because we knew where the line was.

So personally I blame the parents for not watching the kids and for not reinforcing the idea of fantasy and reality into him. So it goes down to bad parenting, and a poor choice of who was watching the kids.

Anyone whose a half decent parent believes their child is special. Not just whites, not just hispanics, not just african americans. Anyone who really loves their child wants to believe their child is the special and the best.

Children are taught to listen to an elder while their speaking, parents, relatives, teachers, etc. Of course they want to socialize but they also know theirs a fine line when they need to listen and when they can. When I work with the kids I usually start out with 5 or 6 and then I take this one boy who is having trouble. He doesn't pay attention whether it's with the group or alone with me. Sure you can say I'm not grabbing his attention, but it works well with the group and I'm slowly finding a technique that is helping him. He also told me his dad trys to teach him at home, he just has trouble recognizing alphabets. He can pronounce them well, he'll sound out 'L' but when I ask him what the letter is, he'll respond with something like 'W'. All in all my point is, he is understanding it, but ADD is handicapping him from fully understanding it.

I never said everyone would've done it, I said a majority. I don't know 'bout you, but me and my friends would pretend Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, sticks for weapons and 'ninja moves' (more like a bunch of kids jumping in the air screaming histerically). We'd swing 'em at eachother, making sure we hit the sticks and not the person. If we did, we'd stop and make sure they were ok. Was my mom a bad mother? No. She taught me their is a line not to cross and we did. Seems your parents may over-parented you in not letting you do stuff,'boys' do.

I said blame does rest of the shoulders of the parents or whoever had custodity of the child at the time. However, blame does rest on shows teaching kids stuff like this. A childs imigination is a wondorous thing. They don't know right from wrong, even if you teach them. When their at home, they have a set of guidlines and when their with their friends, there is a whole new rule book.

Uh I have two older brothers we wrestled all the time. I wasn't over-parented at all the issue is the parents clearly did a half ass job of parenting if the kid didn't know the difference between fantasy and reality. I wont give praise to someone who was "bright" when common sense says you aren't a ninja from the village hidden in sand, and shouldn't be sticking your head in a sandbox to get magical powers.

Yes some kids genuinely do have ADD, but personally I think that parents are just lazy and are looking for a scapegoat to get their kids to calm down and do as the parents ask. If there aren't guidelines taught that carry over when you're at a friends house it's bad parenting because the guidelines should be helping you develop not only mentally, but socially. You can't blame the show it doesn't give you instructions on how to put your head in the sand, and you'll magically become a sand ninja. Yes you can imagine that you are, but thinking that you will become one once again ties to the kid not being bright which then ties back to teaching the kid the difference between fantasy and reality.

Who showed the kid about becoming a sand ninja? The parents or the show? How can you blame the parents, fully, when I highly doubt they were teaching their child how to become a sand ninja. That rests soley on the show. So I can't see how you don't understand the show had NOTHING to do bout it.

I'm sorry but a child without an imigination is a poorly raised child. A child shouldn't be forced to see the real world as it truly is, sure they need to have some sort of guidelines so their not out robbing and killing. The fact remains though, you want your child to have an active imagination.

If the parent doesn't sit the kid down and explain to him why copying things on TV may not be a good thing, then I would blame the parents as well. You can have a good imagination without doing something potentially dangerous, that's the complaint I have.

I take it you've never watched Naruto. The show doesn't have any blame because it doesn't tell you you can become a ninja nor does the lessons that could be learned from Naruto even imply you can become a ninja. It's just that a tv show. It's not the tv show's fault that some kid that was never taught the difference between reality and fantasy stuck his head in a sandbox which was never ever ever ever ever ever ever demonstrated in the show to my knowledge. So by your logic you're saying the kids should be raised by television rather than the parents who should have taught their kid WAY before the age of 10 that there is a difference between fantasy and reality. They also apparently never taught him what common sense is.

Like I said when I was that kid's age I was watching South Park and DBZ never did I once try to jump off a building thinking I could fly or tried to kill a person by stuffing them into a microwave then cooking them. You know why? I was taught there was a difference between what I see on tv of people flying, etc. and a thing called gravity, physics, and things that are just impossible to do with out cutting them up.

There is a difference in a child having common sense and being able to use logic to decipher that head buried in sand != becoming a ninja with powers, and an imagination of just pretending (keyword right there). See how this cycle works? It leads back to fantasy and reality which the kid couldn't distinguish which either means the parents never taught him the differences, or the kid just wasn't bright. I had an imagination when I was 6 I thought I was a power ranger. Did I ever try to you know go out and kill bad guys? Fuck no. Did I want to? Fuck yeah.

Ya, blaming the show is just stupid, it's clearly the parents' fault. Why does our society continue to place blame on sources that don't really deserve it and on those that really are at fault. More often than not, it leads back to the parents NOT some game or TV show or whatnot. Hell, Harvard did a study (it's on Kotaku somewhere) that even proved games (and most entertainment) don't cause violence. That they are, in fact, ways for kids to deal with their frustrations in an imaginary world so they can calm down and feel better in this one.

I VOTE WE START THE "BLAME PARENTS" MOVEMENT!!

Because it's capitalism. It's never my fault anymore it's always someone else's fault.

Like most of you, I grew up playing video games. Resident Evil was one of my all time favorites and my cousin and I watched Beavis and Butthead till we laughed ourselves stupid. My father took us to see the movie when it came out, even.
But we always knew it was entertainment. We never thought for one second we should roll down a hill in a tractor tire into traffic. That's just stupid.

100% blame on the parents.

I agree with you. Unfortunately we all live in a scapegoat society. I still won't be surprised if the soccermoms said it was anime to blame, but I will still be equally pissed off about it. If only there was a way to teach parents on how to teach kids that cartoons aren't real life... Maybe a public service announcement to tell parents to stop being lazy asswipes and teach kids? (apologies to any parents on this board who does actually give a damn about they're kids)

When I was a child I was taught that cartoons weren't real, power rangers weren't real, and things on TV (except news and documentaries) weren't real, and I was fine with that, I had no problem with it. But that was the 80s/90s, before the bloody political correctness sunk in (Damn you political correctness!!!) and had a really bad effect on what we watch. I think Japan is probably the only place in the world that litterally throws political correctness out of the window of a 100 floor skyscraper!

Still that doesn't stop Americans (lol4kids) and the EU/UK from adding political correctness into Japanese products/tv shows (I think the EU is more guilty of this, maybe UK even more so, I don't know what censors or political correctness is like in France, Spain, Germany etc. If anyone does live in those countries, please add some input to this part, I would really love to know what kind of political correctness/censors are added to anime).

Most of the shows thats geared towards kids now in the US and UK probably kills alot of brainwaves rather than actually teaching kids about really important stuff. At times I now wonder if it would be worth learning Japanese and actually living there rather than the US/UK! I'm dead serious, I've had enough of the political crapness.

Apologies if this doesn't make much sense, its almost 1m here and i'm getting tired. I'm gonna stop now before I derail and really start ranting.

Sure, parents CAN teach their children. They can teach them stuff all day 'til their blue in the face. How often do kids actually listen to their parents though? Hell, I'm almost 25 and I still don't take in every word my mother says. Most children don't listen to their parents (which can be led back to ADD), to keep saying well the parents could've told the child the difference between reality and television is sort of assanine. We don't know if they did or didn't tell their child multiple times about the difference.

I too, am one who, hates parent's who scapegoat their way through parenting. Last semester, I wrote a essay about videogames not contributing to adolcent behavior. They are bad parents to blame full responsibility on the show. A more appropriate thing would've been to say, "The anime cartoon, Naruto had some bad influences in teaching a child about becoming a sand ninja." (Disclaimer: I've barely seen the show, only seen a few episodes 'cause my brother watches it, I hate anime lol, so I can't say it did or it didn't, just a more appropriate directin they could've taken if they were going to blame).

I watched Ren and Stimpy ('til my ass of a stepdad banned us), Beavis and Butthead and many other shows as a kid. I ran around trying to imitate Beavis' voice, I called people IDIOTS in Ren's voice. Your telling me you never did any of these? Never role played, trying to be your favorite character?

At what point did Gaara barry himself in sand head first to get his ninjutsu powers?

This kid failed at being a fan, and at obtaining powers. Everyone knows you roll around in nuclear waste. ddduuuuuhhhhhh

Not when I was around 10. I was very boring. I just prefered watching the shows rather than immitate anything. Hell, Power Rangers has those "Do not immitate these stunts" things for a reason, I stood by what it said because I knew that:

A) It wasn't real.
b) It'd be foolish to try and do anything like what they did on TV.

and also:

Spoiler:
C) I would get beat up by my peers a lot more often. I'm very serious.

Now though, I do role play, on D&D, BESM, the WoW RP servers. I'm thinking about doing cosplay when I go to an anime convention.

Mostly the reason why I wouldn't role play is on the above list, the reason in the spoiler tags being the main reason.

Yea, we joked and laughed like beavis and butthead, and I called my cousin a fart knocker just yesterday. But I knew, even as a child, I had the common sense not to stick my head into a sandbox and let other kids bury me.
I baby sat all through high school. I've had kids tie me up while playing "Cowboys & Indians" (and I've got the scars on my wrist from one particular set of enthusiastic brothers). one little 6 year old begged for me to play Turok with him. Yet he didn't pick up a toy gun and try to shoot me afterwards. His parents let him play the game, but no where in the house was there a toy gun. Because his parents felt guns were NOT toys.

Did you see that? Right there.... the difference in reality and entertainment told and taught to a 6 year old. Was Turok a bad influance? No, because the parents made it not be one.

lol, I remember in Elementary School is was VERY uncool to like Power Rangers. So I kept my love of the show to myself, other wise I would have seriously been made fun of to no end. I get off the hook of getting beat up since I'm a girl. We didn't have any "Tough" girls in my schools.

I think were all missing the point. Not every kid is the same. Not every parent is the same. A child can be bought up in a very good home and do stupid stuff. A child bought up in a bad home can grow up to do brilliant stuff. Parents can teach thier child right and wrong. Peers and media can teach a child whats right and wrong. Truthfully, none of us can judge the parents without knowing them and how they raised their child.

When I was a kid I did all the time because I knew it wouldn't get me hurt if I stuck to it. Yeah somethings to hell with my parents I didn't listen, but if you really want to blame the show by all means. It just shows how bad you are when it comes to the parenting aspect. You keep blaming the show, but you know what? The kid placing his head in sand should reflect on the parenting he received not blame the show.

You're posting out of ignorance. No where in Naruto does it say stick your hand in sand, if anything it teaches you if you engulf your head in sand you'll fucking die, and you become a ninja. You don't learn how to throw shuriken from the show it teaches you nothing. The parents failed they looked for a scapegoat found one, and blamed the scapegoat. The parents are terrible hands down.

Did I not mention where I said I would pretend with my friends during school? I watched Beavis and Butthead as well as Ren and Stimpy. I imitated them, but you know what? I never did anything they did that put myself in danger because common sense and what my parents taught me of fantasy =/= reality says it's fucking stupid to do. Then we come back to the parents failing as parents, and the kid not being bright. Stop praising a kid that did something that lacked complete common sense. He wasn't special smart he was just special in the poorly parented.
