Answers from JP Players

I wish I were xenophobic and thought myself superior to the rest of the world that I strangely fear despite my unwarranted sense of being better than it.

You know, it does make things crystal clear about how the Japanese can make such fucked up products. They're so complex that they probably just end up not knowing what the hell they're doing very frequently.

That is a great anthropological survey right there. I skimmed over it but I'll look over it again tomorrow. Damn I wish this computer would show Japanese.

It's a two way mirror - NA players will always be seeing JP counterparts in their own image and vice versa, therefore the other side of the glass will always be darker.

It was interesting to note that despite the whole preoccupation with politeness, some of the answers were... well slightly less than decorous. Although if the shoe were on the other foot, and it were an NA interview, I would hardly expect all perfectly amiable responses either... and thus the world keeps on spinning.

Or, SE could try and expand Auto-Translate to accomodate a better quality of conversation, cutting out many of the problems that arise. It works both ways, some JP hold a lot of contempt for "Engrish", and the general acceptance is that it's because they think they're so much better, or that everyone else is so inferior. That survey perhaps points to the fact that their unwillingness to interact comes from hostility from English-speaking players.

I don't buy that, though. Sure, they'll have met some prize twats. Everyone has, but it all starts somewhere. Did they start playing knowing they'd be "Jponry"? Did they, as they say, form this opinion AFTER bad experiences with "NA" as they put it?

Afterall, a player speaking English doesn't automatically imply that he's NA, as opposed to EU, AUS, or even JP himself. Very interesting, though.

The interview says that when they first joined they were told it would be JP only and when the NAs arrived they were very rude to them and begged them for gil and favors which led many JPs to start hating NAs and now it's just grown from there.

nothing new, same shit
they just speak a different language

Well some of the prejudice seems to have arisen from before even interacting with "foreign" players, as suggested by some frustration that Japanese players were not informed earlier that the game would be available outside of Japan. That's strikes me as a bit odd. I mean sure, I'll admit I was a bit apprehensive when the XBOX crowd drifted in, but then I remembered that idiocy knows no platform - and then everything was hunk dory. But to quit over it? Over a cursory perception of a group of people you never met?

Having said that though, the interview had some sweet responses, and there were only one or two questionably people. I wouldn't call their views an essentially Japanese perspective, but an essentially ignorant one, which is also present on this side of the fence :P

You're acting like that's unique to NA players. I've seen way more JP's just drop party and log out at the drop of a hat than any other group.

Not me.

Might be true for JPs joining NA pts, then they are not true JP that pt at JP primes. When i say JP pt i say pts of 'casual players' that pt 8pm-midnight, not hard core players. I've personally be amazed at the quality of (casual) JP pts over that of ( casual) NAs. That's a totally different way of playing ( 3 h long PTs vs the flow of replacement and AFKs in NAs).

One explaination to that can be that JPs have only one time zone and start /stop playing all at the same time. While 'foreigners' are all around the globe (even US has 3 times zones I think).

And the criticism of JPs saying a lot of NAs are self centered and mainly concerned with themselves, vs JPs that focus on the performance of the PT/LS. I never realized it but its kinda true. Different culture.

Because JPonry in the seacom is for the benefit of others, no themselves, right? lol.

The JP having their own opinions about superior is unsettling, but there's not THAT MUCH you can really do about it. I've met some genuinely nice JP players, who'll go out of their way to be nice and try and speak English, and I've met some total fuckwits. I've met some awesome NA/EU players, and I've met some other fuckwits too. You get your fuckwittery from yourself or your parents, not your nationality/culture. To segregate and refuse to mix with an entire countries-worth of people due to experience with a select few, or from hear-say from other JP players alone, is ignorant. It's their decision though, and I'll certainly lose no sleep over it.

Getting PT at EU primes time is impossible, cause it's a dead time for quetz. Why do you think they always do maintenance during 7pm-11pm our time? I just gave up and PL myself, or do JP pts on the week end.

And yes I really wished they made EU only servers (even in english language).

Yeah on Quetz it was a complete joke. Asura was 100x better when we first moved here but the server population (I presume all servers are witnessing it) is declining gradually here, so it's getting harder here to find EU pts.

That would be horrible for Australian gamers. We're in completely different timezones to the EU player-base, but we're fairly close to the Japan times, however we cant speak the language!

You usually get shoved with West Coast Americans iirc.

Actually they could just run an Oceania server and move all ten of us there. lol

Man, it's as if this article affirms that everyone is racist to something or some group of people. No kidding huh? It's the earths greatest strength and flaw all at once.

I get out of this that most Japanese hate the english language with a passion, and think we're all rude. If the Japanese asked us the same questions we'd say the same things in vice versa.

Frankly, fuck them.

That's the way they feel about us, and that's the way I feel about them. No I don't have any super memorable bad experiences and yes I'm probably racist.
